Forum Flyers
Re: Forum Flyers
Boat 1 afloat, not by me I should say, Carol, who I train with at the gym. 666m flat out at 6am is not pleasant, might plan better the next attempt.
Will get the kids going on this one as well, nice an easy and keeps them quiet for a bit
Mr Moores, my error has been found and you should see the correct number next time I update the stats, The century is close....

Re: Forum Flyers
Hi all.
Been doing CrossFit for about 5 months. Sat on a rower and the numbers suggested I was a natural world beater. Got really excited till I found a Concept2 rower. Now I'm just average . That said, I'm keen to do some more of this rowing stuff. Looking forward to rowing with you guys.

Good to have you aboard. This is just about the most fun you can have while simultaneously spilling you guts. And it's the most fun when you're new and making rapid improvements. Be psyched! Get faster!Reitze R wrote: ↑October 10th, 2019, 9:05 amHi all.

Maybe tell a bit how “average” you are based on that we could give some pointers if you want to.
Ps, saw your ctc entry, looks like you are around 7min on the 2k?

Re: Forum Flyers
I haven't done a 2k yet. Did the 666 this morning in 2:08 and also did a 1 min covering 341 m. Am trying to recalibrate expectations on the Concept2. I think you are right when you say about a 7 Min on the 2k.

Re: Forum Flyers
No problem, just made a rough gestimate based on that 666 result. And if you are a real newby you could expect rapid improvements in the beginning.

Great to see another South African on board. I was starting to feel a little lonely here!Reitze R wrote: ↑October 10th, 2019, 9:05 amHi all.

A lot of us speak Afrikaans, which is a simplified form of Dutch. For the most part we use English on a day to day basis, and then in the area I live a little bit of Zulu.
I see you're from the Netherlands? My mom is actually from Amsterdam. They immigrated to SA in the 1960s.

Re: Forum Flyers
When I was working at Absa in Jo'burg I found that lots of the ZA folks (when talking amongst themselves) could start a sentence in English and include lots of Afrikaans bits in the middle (or vice versa). The switch between languages was seamless. I'd guess it works on the basis of using the best word to get an idea across for the folks that are truly multilingual. The language isn't English or Afrikaans but a homogeneous mixture of both.

Yep Dutch here, Amstelveen, which is a town south of Amsterdam, glued to it. To us SA sounds nice, you guys do use different words sometimes, but those are Dutch still. Shows how rapidly a language can change.Reitze R wrote: ↑October 12th, 2019, 6:43 amA lot of us speak Afrikaans, which is a simplified form of Dutch. Same a bit with Flemish in Belgium, fully Dutch also, but again with different words.

Re: Forum Flyers
I'm in Cape Town, but was in East London for most of my school years. There are a few SA people that pop up on the ranking list, but they haven't found the forum yet it seems.
On the language side, we speak English at home, but my wife is Afrikaans, so when her family is around, they move between the two languages seamlessly as Dougie noticed when he was in Joburg. I've learnt to zone out when they're speaking, but "wake up" when conversations switch to English because they're wanting me to join in again.
I came down from Zimbabwe during primary school, so got thrown in the deep end with having to take Afrikaans as the second language. It did come in handy when we visited Amsterdam last December - can read the signs pretty easily, and occasionally can understand some of the train announcements, etc.
