Image Day 1 of 31...and so it begins!!

Lunie Fall Challenge Team ... 17th in the rankings at this moment. Could change by the time this posting is complete.

We have 54 teammates signed on for the Fall Team Challenge. Teams are allowed to add teammates until September 30...and then the rosters close. Some say that the real Challenge begins on October 1st when the teams are "set" and everybody goes all out to best the other teams. Here in the US, the Challenge is only a few hours old. We have meter contributions from some of our teammates who are on the other side of the International Date Line and from some of our European and east coast Lunies. The rest of us are still working on coffee and REM sleep!

For teammates who need or want an individual component to the team challenge, well there is one! There is a team ranking and there is an individual ranking. Some teammates challenge themselves to be in the top ten percent of all participants...and some challenge themselves to be in the top ten. Right now to be in the top 10 percent, you'd need greater than 18750 m in your Fall Team Challenge meter piggybank. It's a commitment. Do what you can, when you can.

Any advice on ramping up training? I am almost to 3 months of consistent training, but I am closer to 160k meters per month. I'd really like to make 200k, should I be worried about the increase in meters. Honestly, my body isn't giving me great feedback... My legs feel great (I'm a former runner), but the upper body is definitely on the learning curve.

My gut is telling me to concentrate on slow and steady, but I see so many things online that say if you aren't rowing 2:00/500m then you aren't trying (I'm a mid to late 30's male that has a relatively athletic background).

Maybe I'm just complaining, but hey, that's why I joined a group.

I've been trying to study rowing and erging to make sure I don't go too far down a path with poor technique. I try to maintain a focus on form: legs, core, arms...stroke around 20-24. My form is crap compared to ideal because I'm working on fully engaging my full core through the stroke. It's difficult to know when I'm compromising form for speed because I get going on the erg and I wanna just keep pushing.

Really, I'm looking for reinforcement that I need to slow down and just sit on the erg and row. Trying to not overthink the bump in meters.

Does rowing more meters help or hurt your form? Yes and no. When you get tired, one of the things that happens is that your form slips. Bumping up your session meters by adding what is probably less than 8 minutes to your session shouldn't change things too much either way.

Not going to give the reinforcement. If your goal is 200K per month, figure out how many meters you need to row per session to get to that number. Then don't overthink what you're doing. The time it takes to complete your session (especially if it is the same number of meters) is going to improve. You can always set the display to highlight your split times and work on a 3-5 percent improvement of that split time for a week or two. You might not get there every single session, but you will get there. If you say your form is crap compared to ideal...well, I think your full core will get engaged without changing from the ideal.

We were in 2nd a few minutes ago - and this just highlights how fluid everything is in this Challenge as more teams and teammates get going. The Lunies have 69 teammates on the Challenge Team roster. I'm 43 and weigh around 310 at around 34% body fat. I'm pretty sure I couldn't run a mile without having to walk. I rowed 30k meters today broken up between 3 sittings. I'm reasonably confident that you're capable of pushing yourself much further than you can currently imagine. You won't find out until you push yourself outside your comfort zone. See what you can do.

Catching up on Luna-tic news - we've been travelling (unexpectedly) over the past 3 weeks to our tropical north...

Hi SweatSlide! I was just looking for some of the resources I used to use. I remember this Training Programme on a UK website - but things have moved around a lot. I think I just found it at: http://www.redking.me.uk/sport/rowing/t ... ing_v2.pdf. Also, you might want to look up The Wolverine Plan and The Pete Plan. The Pete Plan is a modification (simpler to follow) of The Wolverine Plan.

We're hanging on to the 4th spot in the roster, but oh so tenuously. Only one answer! Do more meters than the other teams! There was a time when I spoke with Greenville Indoor Rowing...and their aspiration was to beat us. Well, I guess they have gotten the numbers to do that fairly consistently, but we are not done yet.
