Hahaha, gotta love an accidental PB!! Great confidence boost for the HM.

I'm probably not going to get a chance to do one due to work (away overnight tomorrow) so it depends how much self control I have got on the night out to stop myself from drinking too much, but we'll see

Ha ha... I love it when halfway through a session you get that "I'm going to go for it" feeling... and then proceed to lay it down. Well done.

Thanks everyone. Pace was a bit random - shall I, shan't I? dithering most of the way through. Couldn't make myself slow down, so finally went for it in the last 2k. Was stuffed at the end, and my original goal of sub 40 this calendar year looks a bit ambitious. 42's not far off, though and perhaps 41.30 would be much more realistic target.

Mind you, if Andrew can take 25s off his PB at his level (an astonishing performance) perhaps I should just aim high!

Well done Max, a HM is never an easy session, and I do recommend a headband. You will look a sight but it's very useful for longer sweaty rows. Feeling like someone is squirting lemon juice into your eyes is never a nice feeling.

Any plans for keeping the longer rows a regular part of your rowing?

I've noticed the longer the row, the closer my times get to yours. I'm planning an HM this afternoon, so we'll see how close I can get to that...

The best thing about being a newbie to a sport is that at first the gains come relative quickly, so you can feel good about it.

Mentally I was shot, but physically I felt better at the end than after the faster 10k I did mid week. I used a particularly skanky headband when rowing in the summer (lots of sweat when it's 30+), but can't find it now. It's not a panacea, but it definitely reduces the sweaty eyes issue!

Currently I'm doing two intervals sessions (one short, one longer), a faster ss and a long ss row per week. I'm getting fitter, but I haven't got my head round the physiological effects of the training mix yet. When I did a bunch of slowish 10ks in March, that just made me better at slowish 10ks. To get faster at these longer pieces, I will need to be as comfortable at, say 2.08 as at 2.10. I guess that'll come with time on the seat, but no real idea which of the four pieces per week is most important.

I think I've had a bit of an epiphany about my technique (lots of strokes to think about during an HM). I've been using the arms a fraction too early, so arresting my momentum without my feet yanking on the footstraps has been hard. Basically, I think my arms have been 3rd lawing against my feet, so by the time I need to stop myself, the handle's already at my chest. I think some extra core work (which I hate) leading to a stronger lay back as well as mentally trying to cue myself to pull on the handle to stop my body will be the go for a bit.

Sorry you didn't get to do yours. Careful with the tendonitis. It can be a bitch. The blood flow is poor/non existent, so healing can take a while.

Thanks Alasdair,

I think the last split was a bit of misleading. No way psychologically that I could have maintained that pace at the moment, but it'd sneak me in under 90 mins, which would be cool.
