For those of you who train with a HRM and achieve good times....

When you achieve something like a 5K in 18min....what is your % of MHR? Also are you constantly pulling like sub 2m/500s the whole time, or varying?

My pace is very even through time trials, and my heart rate goes up to max or near max by the end.

If I've paced myself correctly, I will hit around 85% about 500-750m into it and then see my HR continue to gradually rise up to my max at the end of the 5K. My pace for very hard sessions 5K and longer almost always have negative splits getting slightly faster throughout the piece.

Is this the information you seek?

Interesting.

As I get back into rowing I am starting to monitor HR as I have previously used it quite a lot as a guide for interval work (non rowing) plyometrics and recovery but I need to be a bit more precise in my monitoring to be able to give any really useful feedback.

As a start though my only timed 5k so far was done at 1:52.5 pace but looking back I know I could have gone a bit faster so it was not really a flat out row.

From memory my HR got to around 130 fairly quickly and then rose steadily to about 152/154. I did not monitor it all the time but towards the end I was at about 157 with the final 750 meters taking it to about 160 or just over.

I have done a 10k at 1:54.5 pace where the changes were similar and I my average HR for the whole row was around 149 and I spent quite a lot of time between 150 -158.

Pace was fairly even throughout.

Finally 60mins (15,155m) resulted in an average of 146 and I was above 150 for 38 minutes but did not ever reach 160.

Some odd results perhaps and I need to think about this more and how it should correlate with UT2/UT1 training etc. It is now time for me to organise my training schedules properly and to monitor HR results more accurately. Happy to feedback data over next few months if of interest to anyone. (George; this is something that I was thinking of debating with you anyway.)

George,

Most of the rise is at the start, then more gradual after that.

I've not checked it in a time trial recently, but last summer here is what it was for 10x 4:00 at an even pace, going up to 85% of hrr at the end of the 10th one.

142-147-148-151-151-151-152-153-153-154

(154 - 43) / (174 - 43) = 85%

When you achieve something like a 5K in 18min....(snip) are you constantly pulling like sub 2m/500s the whole time, or varying?

4K in 18' is a 1:48 average. You would probably be pulling sub 1:50 the whole time. I once did a PR (something around 19:15) when I was doing some intervals of 2' at 2K race pace and 2' "easy" at 2:00/500m. I wouldn't recommend intervals as a test piece strategy.

Wow, I don't know what I am doing wrong.

When I am doing a sub 40min 10k or over 15'000m 60min, My heart rate is usually over 165 by the 1/3 mark, and over 170 by the 2/3 mark. I usually hit over 180 for the last 5 minutes.

P.S. In the graph below, disregard the altitude. I don't know how I managed to ascend 357m on a C2!

When I did my PB in 18:07 last year (after one month of training on the erg!), my splits and HR were as follow:
1:49.6 @161; 1:49.6 @ 165; 1:49.4 @167; 1:48.9 @ 168; 1:46.0 @ 174;
Spm was 29 during the whole 5K. My maximum HR on the erg is around 182 bpm and was reached at the end of the 5K.

Cheers!
