good training session for the 2k next week I think
mine were @1:40.9
Terry @1:51.1
…..not bad for 2 old fellas.

Well that the first one floating, Carol doesn't really enjoy these sprints, but i made her do it!!!

Back in June for a bit more rowing, my training needs a bit of focus.

Need a few more flyers or need to nudge the old flyers. We post here and I tend to post on Facebook, is there anywhere else we should be putting our name??
Hjs posts his training to Instagram. Not certain if he does any recruiting? Spring may be the worst season for banging the drum. When summer heat drives em inside, maybe indoor rowing will pick up. Doesn’t bother me to get a shot at an occasional point or three but right now we need lighties. And ladies!

One would think winter would make for good indoor sport recruiting in the southern hemisphere? 🤔 I’m told the chief cause of solipsism is the inability to look beyond the end of one’s nose—or is it axial precession? B) Whatever the case, it didn’t occur to me to look in ‘general.’ Good prospect, Lindsay.

Not on instagram Sorry. But that is the place to be nowadays. Also don,t do much recruiting either. Think we need a younger generation to new and extra blood in the Flyers.

We don't actually have winter in most of Australia Jack! (for example it has never snowed in Sydney in recorded history) OTW actually happens all year around although there is definitely a summer season when the training and then the races happen culminating in the big ones including the Heads in March and April. I am however racing OTW this weekend and the next and always have my antennae out. The next opportunity is 3 race days in September and October. One of the problems is of course that the OTW people (who by and large seem to hate the erg) can always get out OTW.
Think we need a younger generation to new and extra blood in the Flyers.
You are right (of course) Henry - the average age of a Flyer is continuing to rise!

Sorry Henry. Twitter right there in your signature line, duhuh.

Lindsay, Team Oarsome has intramural challenges. I don’t know the magnitude of the contribution that social media exposure makes to their success. Definitely where the Stars come out to shine! Guess the poor old forum is more How To than Who’s Who. Is the forum an antisocial medium?

The three “Martins” have put some juice in FF boats of late as has MelG. But there is a disconnect somewhere. I used to think the coaching here built special ties between people who never met. I certainly am in the debt of forum members who were and are extremely generous of their time and experience to both competition and fitness rowers. As are many of the younger (and faster) set. But they don't recruit in quantity and they don’t stick! Maybe the average age of the recruiters is The Problem? :?

@ recruiting:
My spouse started rowing about 3 weeks ago, she'll join our team if that's OK.
But don't expect any records in the near future :D

Abolutely positively, Martin! We have always advocated BYOW to fill boats. Never worried much about the effect on domestic harmony but maybe the family that rows together showers together or uses the same foot powder or enjoys bigger breakfasts together? Got to be some residuals! :D

I might give the june challenge a go, looks like a hard one, but my heavy person is not going to float any boats, for that we need lighties and ladies.
Working my way towards a 2k OTW race next week that I am frankly dreading so need to polish up the high rate endurance a bit.

Good morning fellow FF,

Hope you are all keeping well.

Back (again) after an other hiatus (again). After a fruitful and good volume run from Sept end to Jan end, it petered out in February and then just couldn't stand the sight of the erg for March/April/May. Not all negative as it was only a result of boredom/motivation and thankfully not caused by injuries like the previous hiatuses. Whilst the erg fitness has obviously decreased, I still did maintain some activity with walking around a fair bit so the weight/belly improvements gained over the last few months have not totally disappeared (115kg down to 103kg in Feb, now back to 106kg). The aim is now to push closer to the 100kg in that next spell.

My mistake was to get eventually hell bent on long slow meters at slow rate to keep up with the rat race in the affiliation  . It was a great motivation at first but then it became addictive and mind numbing. I was always aiming to do at least 14-15km per session and the weariness did set in.

Learning from it, I am for now trying to cap to max 10k-12k per session but varying the pleasures within it (e.g. 3x3k, 3 or 4x15 min, 3x20min, 5 x 2k, etc - or a variation of the long C2 workout of the day for instance). I also became guilty (comfortable ?) of sticking to rate 20/21. I now try to have one of those chunks at 22 or 24 or 26 to build in some higher rate as well, although I still find those higher paces "unnatural". I feel more efficient in a long hard full stroke at 20 or 21. I 'll have to break this habit to avoid boredom setting in again.

I did try half of the CTC on 10 intervals, ended up at 1'58 avg. Will make sure i have a go before month end when i have regained some usage on the erg.

So here goes. Happy rowing ! B)

Bonjour Olivier (altho it is bonsoir here at the moment)
Good to see you have identified a way forward. I must say that your solution seems pretty sensible - I like the interval approach and do it a lot and varying your stroke rate and paces will help a lot and you will still get an excellent training effect. Variety is the spice of life!
best of luck
