Thanks Hjs, wasnt sure if i was feeling okay post 10k because of the differences between anaerobic vs aerobic. But what you say makes perfect sense. I think the penny has dropped actually. Will certainly go into my next 10k test with a bit more determination and aim a bit higher....ive been too conservative it seems!
I totally agree with Henry (HJS) and for a 5k and above it's more about getting confidence and belief in the right place. 2k hurts in a different way to both of these.

Expect some HDs as you need to tickle the edges of a HD to really know what you're capable of. If you are finishing feeling like you could have gone faster you're definitely holding back too much, which is not an issue if you're just training. No need to batter yourself in training, save that for a PB attempt.

Try and notice where it becomes painful and also when you start to feel better. This is good info for when you do it again so it doesn't knock you off track and if it happens later, or it isn't as bad, it's a good confidence boost.

Distraction is really important when you're suffering. If you focus on the pain you'll rapidly decline.

Best of luck and aim for something ambitious but still reasonable and see what happens.

For a 142 2k, you should be able to pull a 152 ish 10k, but thats a full 100% go, the feeling should be like after a 2k.
5k is nasty, its pretty fast from the off, and takes long, 10k is relative a bit easier, around 6/7k in it starts to get tough and pace should start to wobble, if not, you are not pushing really 100%.
The last 2k you often can pull back, by rating up and smelling the stable. But it will be tough. Breathing hard and nothing in real reserve.

Not saying you should be there right away but in time you will. You are still very much a newby, so enjoy this fase, you learn a lot and will improve rapidly, enjoy :D

I think you get a lot out of rowing the same distance over and over again, you really get to know the signals your body is sending you.

I.e. is this just normal tiredness, or am i going to hard?

Because you get constant, replicable feedback.

5k i do a weird kind of pace but works for me.

All references are to the average pace measure

15 hard strokes
Slow down below race pace through to 800 m.
Hit race pace at 800.
Race pace 800 through to 2k
By 3k drop 0.1 from the average pace.
By 4k drop another 0.1
4k to 4.7k. As hard as i feel is sustainable.(this can vary between just barely holding on to my average page or really accelerating)
Last 300. Count backwards 30 strokes as absolutely as hard as possible.

I remember reading some dudes plan to a wr 2k (maybe xeno??) and so this is similar to his approach but over 5k

Last 1k will drop the average pace by about 0.4 seconds so is considerably faster than the other 4 splits.

2k
total time 7.34.7
1.53.6/500m

One of my targets for this year was 7.40, so smashed that. :D

Didn't think I'd be able to finish at about 500m to go, but suddenly there was only 300m left, which felt manageable. Counted down the last 30 strokes. Bleurgh.

Always fun to smash a goal! How was your pacing, was it fairly consistent? Also, 26 SPM for a 2K seems a little low, might gain some with getting the rating higher.

well done max! 7.30 next! :D
do you not use Ergdata? it's useful to revisit how you rowed it looking at the graph in the log or CSV, rather than just having the interval info.

Well done Max! You will definitely benefit from increasing the stroke rate up to 30+ but that will come with time and more fitness.

Counting down the last 30 strokes is a great distraction

Last 2k that i did my freshman year of hs a few weeks ago, i'm a male, 5' 10" and 130 pounds. My time was a 7:48.9, i'm really happy about my time since the first 2k i pulled at the start of the season was like a 8:38 and my original goal was to just go 8 flat
