Buy a BikeErg now or wait for new version?

Post by Garyvrck » May 14th, 2019, 11:09 pm

I would like to purchase a BikeErg to complement my Model C rower.
It seems the BikeErg was released about a year and a half ago. Any guesses when an updated version will be released?
Should I buy now or wait a few months for a possible new version?

Thanks in advance,
Gary

Concept 2 never announces the pending release of a new model of anything, why would they, it would kill sales.

If the rowers are anything to go by the development cycles are pretty long, could be 5 to 10 years before something newer.

Look at their rowers.

The current model is called model D*. In its current form, it was launched in 2006. That is 13 years ago. And it was not even a completely new model, but just a facelift** of the the first model D, which was launched in 2003. Which is 16 years ago.

So don't hold your breath for a new BikeErg.

(*: There is a newer model E, but that is more of niche model for people who don't want to sit close to the floor. The model D is what most people still buy.)

(**: The facelift was mainly cosmetic: Colour changed from blue to black, foot rests changed from metal to plastic, rail assembly system was changed, and wheel covers were added. At some point, a nickel-plated chain was added too, but I don't know if that happened at the facelift.)

The key parts are the PM5, on which updates are user applicable, and the physics of flywheels which even Einstein could not update in our low-speed world. These put the C2 well ahead of all others, so if you need it, get it.

Bits and pieces can fall off any machine, but the basic rule is keep it simple, just as C2 does: what's not there can't go wrong.

2024: stroke 5.5W-min@20-21. ½k 190W, 1k 145W, 2k 120W. Using Wods 4-5days/week. Fading fast.

Thanks for your thoughts folks.
I’ll likely pull the trigger soon.

I picked up my BikeErg today! Looking forward to setting it up and starting to use it this week. I hope I can find some beginner training plans in these forums to ease into things.
