Great work Martin!

Gives me something to aim for
Thanks :-)
I hope it's a little extra motivation, my pace should be possible for you too. Will we see 30' 8k this season from you?

I was convinced months ago that I could get the 8k but last time was not quite there so I am holding out for one more attempt this season. As for your 2k, that is a great target for me, which I don't think I am capable of but I will try a couple of runs to 1500m at your pace and see how it goes. I think I may have fitness for sub-6:50 but we'll see.

Anyway, great work on the 2k and I think I will steal your idea and use 200m splits.

It's important to surround yourself with people who are ahead of you in the fitness journey as it keeps you motivated to achieve more BUT you achieved this all down to your own hard work and willingness to suffer.

As Henry says keep building your base and this time will keep improving.

2k Test today.

Main goal. 7:29
Dream goal. 7:25

Result 7:19

It hurt, a lot.
I paced it really well.
I emptied the tank over the last 500 and the last 300 were strong but very, very hard.
I could not have gone faster today.

VERY chuffed with that.
Woo Hoo!
Congratulations - not just beating your main goal, but even your dream goal!

Today is my first day of retirement, and for some bizarre reason I thought it appropriate to mark the occasion with my first 2K time trial.

It went much better than I'd hoped. Based on previous 8x500r2 and 4x1000r5 workouts, I targeted a 1:51 split pace and my goal was to finish under 7:25. Stretch goal was to reach 7:20. I ended up hitting 7:17.8.

Splits were 1:49.1, 1:50.4, 1:49.4 and 1:48.9. Full details here: https://log.concept2.com/profile/203297/log/37949246

I was particularly happy that:
  • Despite expectations set during the 3rd 500, I didn't actually die.
  • My pacing, aside from being a little faster than planned, followed my pre-race plan.
  • I got this result even with too much alcohol last night, and too little sleep.
Heading out tomorrow for a trip with the wife to kick off life as a retired couple, but when I return I'll start up the Beginner Pete Plan to see where that will take me.

1.5” top to bottom spread on pace and relentless negative split for 1500m! If you had a near-death experience, you sure kept it out of the numbers. Very strong!

Set off to do the hour before the end of season just to post one
Never been anywhere on 60' - best from 2016 was 15360m - its never been my thing
today was 15368 @1:57.1 - not much but I will take it - very surprised (and pleased of course)

I decided to put all excuses to one side and just go for the 8k in 30 minutes today.

I warmed up for 1k, then went for it, setting the PM for 3 minute splits. Was cautious and disciplined and wasn't sure I was going to make the 8k until about the last couple of minutes, at which point I upped the speed.

Ended up with 8,016 so I'll take that.

Almost 100m more than previous PB. This was tough but not super-nasty-tough. But I'm glad to have got the 8k in 30 in the bag before the end of the season. Hit max HR in the final three minutes.

Now I'm going to eat some waffles.
