Google Fit Sync for ErgData

Post by will.holdsworth » March 22nd, 2019, 6:35 am

The Ergdata app is good at getting information transferred to a few of the main fitness apps like MyFitnessPal and Peaks. However, for those of us that have a Wear OS device the default health app is Google Fit and there's currently no direct way to sync data from the ErgData app directly to Google Fit.

At the moment the only way to get information to sync workouts is via Strava which often unreliable and can't differentiate between indoor and outdoor workouts so it logs erg workouts as water sessions on the Fit app which can't be changed.

A direct sync from the ErgData app to Google Fit would remove the need for Google Fit to piggyback off Strava and would be useful for anyone with a Wear OS device which typically has Google Fit as the only fitness tracker on the watch.

(I know i should have gone with a Garmin watch instead of Wear OS, but i didn't know that at the time)

Since you seem to have a little experience with the Google Fit app - I'm having issues finding a way to sync up my heart rate monitor to the app! I can't find a menu anywhere that lets me choose a HRM or sync to one. I have a Wahoo Tickr Fit (the armband), and it is Ant+ and Bluetooth smart, it links up to ergdata and my PM5 no problem.

I see the "Heart Rate" field listed with "no recent data". --Does this data only get pulled from other connected apps? If so, I just need to try to re-link my Strava account maybe to fix this.

My Google fit also fails to pull my saved Erg sessions from Strava. Between the two of those issues I've stopped using the app =(.

Oh, I have a bit of experience with the Fit app but I haven't personally worked with the ANT+ heart rate monitors.

I think the only way to get heart rate readings in the Fit app is to use a Wear OS watch and start a workout. The only way I've found getting a 3rd party Bluetooth HR monitor is to sync via a strava workout.

If your Bluetooth monitor syncs via the ErgData then you should be able to use Strava as a 'Middle-Man' app to sync your heart rate data to the Fit app, but I don't think you can directly track your HR.

Syncing between Strava and Google Fit can be a pain, but I found uninstalling the Fit app, reinstalling it. Then reconnecting Google Fit in Strava 'Settings' > 'Link Other Services' works.

Tried that, it gets my "heart points" from the workouts, but definitely doesn't keep the heart rate data. I'm not terribly concerned about it, just wasn't sure where Google fit thinks it's going to get heart rate data if it won't pull it from my Strava workouts, nor have any way to link up to my HRM.

Thanks for the suggestion.

The newest Google Fit update was installed on my phone (Pixel 2 XL) yesterday. I use Ergdata in a cradle on my DIR. After I the usual 60 minute row I checked Google Fit just for the fun it. I had already set up a workout titled Rowing. This is what I found:

Rowing
May 24, 12:10 -1:10 PM

> 60 >> 61
Move Min Heart Points

Active Time 1h 00m 00s
Distance 0 miles
Steps 6,000
Calories 267

That sounds like it could be exactly what I was after.

I'll have to run an update to make sure I'm running the latest version of Google Fit and see if it syncs as well.

Thanks for letting me know about the update.
