I’ve been doing the BPP since the beginning of the year and have a quick question for you guys. Within the next four months, I’ll need to go on a few trips overseas ranging from a week to two weeks long. I won’t have access to a rower and probably very little time for any cardio in general.

The question I have is where do you resume the program when you get back? Do you just go back a week in the program for each week away? Do you resume the program but at a slower pace exactly where you left off? What would be the best plan?

Thank you.

Going back a week for every week you miss seems like a reasonable strategy. See how you feel.

During the bpp I maybe missed a week or 1.5 weeks at most for work trips etc and just picked up where I left off with no ill effect. So I wouldn’t overdo the regressing the plan. If it’s only a week or two just get stuck in again but if you don’t hit the target pace on your first session after a break just take that as your new target pace and go from there.

Cancel those travel plans. The BPP is only 23 weeks. Can't you commit to that?

Seriously, a week off here and there won't be a problem to just pick up where you left off. Two weeks away from the erg and I might be tempted to revisit the last completed week and restart from there.

PP day 2: went for a 60min r20 but I didn't feel great at all. Could hardly maintain 2:30, wheras I normally get 2:20/2:25 pretty easily. I almost gave up 30mins in.

Maybe Trained too hard yesterday? Or is it common for some days that the aerobic base training feels hard?

Not to hard, but Pete plan is not ment to build a base, but to build a peak, very normal to be tired, try to get used to it. It was only day one. The three hard sessions makes it tough, the other three will be a lot easier.

2.30 for you is very easy, shows your base needs a lot of work. Lots to gain, to be positive. Don,t worry about the pace, but try to take good strokes though. Don,t be sloppy.

One of my coaches made me do 4x500m w 2min rest. Averaged 1:52.4 (not that fast but still recovering from monday a tiny bit) Had to get used to 2min rest. I'm used to more rest the 2mins def made it harder. Cranked out 1:42 for the last minute of the last set though! I had no idea I could go that fast (still strictly adhering to r24 ofc)
Average time was ok, definitely already seeing an increase in power which is awesome.

BPP 8.2, 4 x 1500m r3 done at 2:05.9. I didn't have much left in the tank for the last one and couldn't really muster a better pace.

BPP 4.2 3x1000/3’ r

Went out a bit too fast and had a tough time with the 2nd and 3rd intervals. Strength/power seems to be progressing faster than fitness....more SS!!

Re: Pete Plan Thread (how to rest between intervals)

Post by roy649 » March 11th, 2019, 10:19 am

When the plan calls for rest between intervals, what does that mean? Total rest (i.e. stop rowing), or just dial the effort back? What I tend to do is keep rowing at a really easy pace, just enough to keep myself loose and warmed up. Is that the intent?

your choice i think.
Pete suggests some easy rowing. I stop for a bit then row a few strokes then stop etc. Depends how u feel really.

BPP 8.3, 8500m done at r21, 2:16 with HR capped at 145. Another nice, easy steady state piece with some good sweat at the end.

PP 2.3 - 4 x 2000m / 5min rest
used my average from 20 Nov (2:02.8) for the first 3 intervals then fast as poss in the last.
Enjoying the PP again!

Nice session, Robert. You had quite a bit left in the tank for that last 2k.

BPP 9.1 for me. 9000m at 2:17, r20. I tried to keep my HR below 150 but it rose above and went up to 155 in the last 3k despite my efforts to slow my pace. I suspect I was a bit dehydrated.

BPP 4.4 6000m

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M
24:54.3 6,000m 2:04.5 181 923 21 160
4:12.3 1,000m 2:06.1 174 900 19 154
4:08.7 2,000m 2:04.3 182 926 21 154
4:07.8 3,000m 2:03.9 184 933 22 157
4:10.5 4,000m 2:05.2 178 913 22 161
4:12.2 5,000m 2:06.1 175 900 21 164
4:02.7 6,000m 2:01.3 196 974 22 174

Started out 1 sec faster than my previous 6500m session a few days ago. Felt pretty strong for the first half so pushed the pace a little. HR crept up so had to back off on the 4th and 5th splits, but kicked it up for the final 1k. Finished at a slightly higher HR than I'd planned, but happy with the progress so far.
