Training
Many years ago we had a student in our cycling club who wanted to win the National 1K time trial (really a long sprint) and he did high intensity intervals very much like what rowers refer to as the Hywel Davies method: intervals at the desired pace, with rest periods shorted until he could do them, then increased the pace and started over with longer rest periods, shortened as he progressed, etc. He ended up with his resting heart rate in the low 30's. At my request he did 600 watts for 70 seconds. I picked 600 watts because that would be enough power capability to qualify for the Nationals at the track. I think he could have done more.

Miguel Indurain's resting heart rate was 28.

Byron

I figure to be a competitive heavy, I'd need to add about 20 pounds

You appear to be a lot like me when I was a skinny teanager. I put on 40 pounds of muscle during a half year growth spurt when I was 18. I didn't lift weights or anything - just continued to paddle a lot whenever I could - and ate everything in sight! Since you are 18 years old, I suspect the same will happen to you. I suggest a lot of rowing. Some long distance, some sprint intervals. Eat plenty of fruits, grains and protien during your growth spurt. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich is the perfect growth food! I suspect you will weigh in around 210 pounds by next year.

Cheers,

Paul Flack
