LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
March 1–31
Here in northern New England (home of Concept2's headquarters), we have a "fifth season" that happens in between winter and spring—Mud Season! This is when the snow melts and our many dirt roads get really muddy—sometimes even impassable. It's a good time for an indoor workout, so join us for the Mud Season Madness Challenge!
And sometimes that mudness extends to our very own backyards in that time between dry ground and melting snow. Blink and it's snowing again, and the muddy mess freezes up. Today is a mud day, and with two furry Goldens with really big feet....what.a.mess they make. I tried just filling a five gallon bucket, and getting the dogs to stand for putting one leg at a time into it. Freaked them out and was a lot messier than I wanted it to be. The last mudness season was so bad that I determined that I would have to find an answer to all those muddy paws - an answer that didn't require the dogs to stay outside or walk through a footbath to get into the house. So, in the spirit of Mudness and how to effectively deal with it, I am sharing info for my fellow teammates who might have dogs and mudness season issues...and will need more time for erging for the next 30 days.
Behold the mudbuster!
These things are sized according to paw size. There is a removable sheet of silicone bristles that wraps around the interior of the container. You add water to the container, and grab the dog. Insert one paw at a time and the bristles swish off the mud. Quick towel dry and no muddy feet. Pitch the muddy water content outside and you're ready for what will surely be the next episode. Even better, you don't end up with a stack of dirty "dog" towels.
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Excellent words Kona - when I joined the forum I thought it was the thing to do to post your best times under your signature but to be honest I might even delete mine. It serves no purpose to be honest and as i've mentioned earlier the only real times to beat are your own. We all come in different shapes and sizes and different strengths and weaknesses so I'd only ever give the rankings a passing glance and to roughly compare. I think it's a good thing to be able to check how you are doing in your age category etc but I've seen some people who are obsessed with being top dog. That's not for me - even though I am competitive!
For me, it's all about self improvement, fitness and health. Start slow and build gradually. Most of all - enjoy the pain and gains!!

Kona,
I enjoyed your description of mud season here in New England. Sad to say but i am looking forward to the mud with two more snowstorms due this weekend. I think that large rodent in Pennsylvania got it wrong this year with the early spring prediction.
Everyone enjoy the Mud Season Challenge!

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
I heartily agree - the only times to beat are your own - and, for that matter, I don't even feel a need to beat my own times, though it can be satisfying at times. In the beginning, I would post times, mostly at 2K, 5k, and 10K, but now I'm less inclined. I try to watch myself, because sometimes I get a little caught up in this competitive frame of mind, and the enjoyment starts to suffer, not to mention the body.
On the other hand, in addition to this Mudness Challenge, and the upcoming World Erg Challenge on March 15, there is another overlapping challenge, the World Rowing Virtual Indoor Sprints on March 6-10 (row 1000m). I think I feel Mr. Nice Guy slipping away...
No prisoners !!!

Hi team!
I joined the team earlier this week and wanted to introduce myself. I've had my Concept2 Model D for a little over 8 years. My logbook shows lifetime meters at about 700k meters. I have logged 210k of those in the past six weeks. I loved the thing when I got it, but I stopped rowing - I'm not sure why. I think I tried to push myself too far, too fast. With age, I think I've finally understand the meaning of the saying "Slow and steady wins the race."
I'm looking forward to contributing to the team.

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
I guess the pros and cons in my mind about timing yourself:
Pro:
- Give incentive to push yourself and improve
Con:
- Can cause injuries if you start to take it too seriously
- Can hurt technique if you are a rather noob like me and you focus on your time instead of how good your form is
So I guess, like everything else, it can be beneficial if done in moderation. This is all about your stats though. I completely agree comparing your stats with other people's won't work at all as there are lots of other factors at play.
I'm glad C2 challenges and K2 in his daily updates in this forum don't take times into consideration. Now I can see why.

He's A Meter Multi-Millionaire !!
Whoop, whoop and way to go!! Congratulations, Louie, on achieving a TWO million meter erging season! We wish you many, MANY more!!
Louie -
I can't take credit for the description of the New England mudseason - that one is Concept2's introduction to the Mudseason Challenge! Colorado is also getting a bunch of snow and brrrr-iffic temperatures for the next few days. In fact, chance of snow is 100 percent. I'll have to get my erging done early ... before the second exercise phase of "shoveling."
He's A Meter Multi-Millionaire !! AGAIN !!
Whoop, whoop and it's a special 8 ! Congratulations (to go with our shock and awe) on achieving yet another 8 million meter season, Ed! We wish you many, MANY more!! With 57 million lifetime meters, you're working on your second orbit!!

Yep, there's nothing that drives increased participation better than the chance to win free stuff ! And, if history holds true, Concept2 will be picking both a 5K and a 10K winner from this weekend's efforts - so double your chances, Lunies! Weekends are an excellent time to get an extra 5K done.

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
An interesting discussion...! I feel logging PBs can be either a motivator or detractor - whilst it is good to have a record of what your own PBs are, don't look at others ranking if you feel it might be a detractor for you - perhaps don't record it on the C2 site, maybe in a training diary or the like.danwho wrote: ↑March 1st, 2019, 5:13 pmI heartily agree - the only times to beat are your own - and, for that matter, I don't even feel a need to beat my own times, though it can be satisfying at times. But on motivating and detracting - for some it might provide the incentive to improve, but for others they might just be blown away in a negative way...
Importantly, keep rowing and enjoy!
On another note, my journey on the Rower started in 2008 as I thought of ways to recover from a hamstring injury; I detached it in a skydiving accident. Well almost 11 years down the track I am about 20,000 metres from clocking up 20 million metres and all done with the support of this great team and a lot of music "blaring" out at all times of the day in "the shed"...
So thanks to all for the support!
Cheers, Baz
