World Rowing Indoor Championships

The U-tube feed is showing an FES Rowing (functional electrical stimulation) event from Boston MA in tandem with early WRIC-Long Beach pararower flights. We’re piping it to the big screen via AppleTV.

Absolutely startling audio spike from that feed @ 12:00PM EST. I jumped about a foot off the sofa and the dogs hid in the bedroom. Took me forever to find the remote and pot it down. Effing amateur hour!!

Steve Krum absolutely smoked em in 65-9 hwt. Cooper true to form, no style points but not loosing much speed either. Bloody locomotive! Peter D. In at sixth with standard issue journeyman time.

Chris was aiming around 6:48 so he made it - Krum 6:35 but has to wait until his birthday for a chance at CCs WR
Andy Benko was 6:05 and won "easily"
the fastest masters time 6:01 by Cesar Morales 43+
Carol Woodward won well as hoped/expected and Hubby Rod was second in 6:57 as he predicted last week
The Germans are winning heaps - both the <19y as well as others

Looked for Doc Baker (#38) in the 500 sprint comp. Camera never found him. Believe he went 1:17.

Mr. Baker rowed 1:17 and some change on the 500M. He was right next to me. Very nice gentleman; awesome time!

There are some crazily fast times there.

I'm trying to convince my wife that we should go to Paris next year for our wedding anniversary but I have slightly shot myself in the foot as we have been twice before and I have already mentioned that I'm not bothered about going back again. I have got a year to convince her

The Open Men's race in Long Beach arguably was the second strongest such event in indoor history. In 2002, when Crash-Bs had heats and a final, 21 rowers went sub-6 in the heat, which was won by Jamie Schroeder in 5:52.0. The same number went sub-6 in Long Beach, which was won by Ollie Zeider in a stonking, considerably faster 5:42.6. However, to put the 2002 races in perspective, Schroeder came back later in the day to win the final in 5:50.3. That's two world-class 2ks within a few hours of each other. Moreover, there were 277 competitors in the 2002 race as opposed to 29 in Long Beach. An astonishing 60 rowers in the heat were under 6:10 (not all of them qualified for and/or chose to row in the final).

As for the Open Women's race, to the best of my knowledge it was the strongest in indoor history by a long shot. 23 women in it went sub-7:00. 20 of them were sub-6:50.

This would be one time I might be able to convince my wife to go to a rowing competition. We've only been to Paris once and loved it! I've long planned (for year) to want to compete at 55 in either the Crash-Bs or possibly the WRICs. Then, just last week, my stepson announces he's getting married -- just secured the venue -- the last week of February in 2020. Same week as the WRICs will be, I'm sure. I might have to just row local next year again. I took this year off competitions with my move (and now my back) but hope to be back somewhere next year.

Paris as a venue is nice, apart from the city itself. The races are overall very well joined. And..... The french are not super tall so not everybody is a giant. Makes a changes, normally I am one of the shortest if not the shortest guy in my field, in france less so.
Races will be very different from this year, 90% of the field, us rowers, won,t be there, those will all be french now. Do think it would be nice to get a real sponsor and get more rowers in with price money. 20 times sub 6 is nice, but there are lots of rowers who can do that.
Get aussies, GB, Dutch, eastern Europa etc in. That would be a race.

Other top race would be Essen Kettwig/Germany. 95% plus german only, but boy what a level.
