February Follies 2019

Post by dykebert » January 30th, 2019, 10:38 pm

Hey folks,
Another month another challenge. I don't do the SkiErg and I am not military, so it will be a month of trying to stay motivated other than when I'm doing the Valentine challenge.

After 'The big game', no football. (although I have squirreled away a couple of college games B) ) Last year I was saved by the winter Olympics, but not this year. Not sure what I'm going to do for 'entertainment' when I row. Although I suppose I could try the metronome again, but film it this time. THAT should be very entertaining!

Might keep up the 2K tests. Do one during the CRASH-Bs and then another one during the World competition, just to see where I would rank (last I'm pretty sure  ).

Maybe make your own, e.g. "I'm going to row from my current home to my siblings house by the end of the month." Pick places far enough apart that it is doable, but not too easily.
Try to set one SB (season's best) a week for some of the time, or distance standards.
Row 500 m for every cm of snow you got that day.

Hey David,
Thanx for the ideas! I did at one time think about doing a virtual tour. Mapping out a route, rowing from one place to another, then, when getting to a town, reading about it.

My erg is in front of my TV. I like rowing during football because I can concentrate on the game. I also don't care that much about what they are saying so I don't have to crank the volume to hear it over the erg. I did get a bluetooth transmitter for my TV, so I'm going to try using that with some headphones, and watching a show or movie. My fall back, is using headphones to listen to whatever audio book I'm currently 'reading'.

We're officially into February now. How's everyone doing?

The SkiErg - yuck. I do it at the gym but not my favorite. It's a lot better than the Air Bike which I hate with a burning passion.

My row group is doing another 2K on the 15th and a half marathon on the 23rd. My first and only half marathon was in August 2018 at 2:13:00.0. Not quite sure what my target goal is for this one. I'm going to have to start looking at ladies my age and see what I inspire to reach.

Hi ladies!
I am back from my amazing bike trip to Thailand. Travel there and back had some snafus and was loonnnggg, but the trip itself was great. Biked 181 miles over 7 days and had the opportunity to walk and interact with elephants :). Up at 4am suffering from jet lag, but hope to get back on the rower ASAP. The CTC of 2801 meters looks like a good place to start.

Hey Janet,
Welcome back! Sounds great! I've been looking at this month's CTC myself. May give it a shot this weekend.

Hey Folks,
well I'm in danger of not making the Valentine Day challenge. There's still a chance, if I get a row in when I get home tonight and don't oversleep tomorrow so I can do my morning row. :)

February is always the toughest for me.

How is everyone else doing?

Had a tough time with jet lag and minor virus when I got back, so finally got back on rower today. 4000 down...10,000 to go before midnight tomorrow for valentines challenge. Trying to get back on track with my running and swimming as well. Amazing how a 3 week break can feel like starting over even though I biked many miles on the trip. Travel takes a lot out of you, but the trip was well worth it.

Hi Sharky, Janet, Marta, occowboy and Holly. :)

No rowing for a while due to having work done on the house.😬🤪 Back to it this week though so this is a brief message of encouragement if you are struggling to finish the Valentine Day Challenge. Go for it girls.👍💪 Janet, is it possible for you to ' borrow ' some of your running and swimming energies in order to row that 10,000 metres? Big ask … but you are a tough young lady. :)

I will catch up with you all at the weekend. Where does all the time go?

Jill ( a slightly fraught biddy from Old Blighty   )

Anyone going to have a go at the mud challenge, I probably won't be able to complete it but I intend to give it a go

Hi again ladies,

Something that I forgot to mention in my earlier post and which you might already know about, is the Valentine’s Day CTC, the Carole McNally Memorial Row, which has been an annual event for the last twelve years. Free Spirits always enter a team - you have to row a straight 1402 metres. Of course it’s not compulsory but I would have been annoyed with myself if one of you had said afterwards, “ I wish I had known about it. “

Hi Holly, I will be taking part in the Mud Season Challenge - not sure yet as to whether I'll do the 5,000m or the 10,000m.

Short of time at the moment but I will catch up with things on here at the week-end.

Jill :)

Hi ladies,
Jill, I finished the Carole row for today, so we are boat 1 :). I will definitely complete the 10,000 today throughout the course of the day. Probably nice and easy though...I went out a bit fast on the 1402 row!

I won't be able to do the mud challenge as we will be out west skiing from mar 2 to 11 with no access to rower. Good luck to those doing the challenge. After March we are staying put for awhile so I can get back in my routines.

Back to the rower for a couple more thousand meters!

Gulp
I'm going to have a try at the 5000m which is beyond my current abilities, but I'm going to have a go.

Didn't know there was the option of a 10,000m as well, total respect.

The other day in the mail I received nice little surprise from C2 - a 200,000 January meters pin. Woo hoo!

Just finished the Valentine's challenge so I'm staying steady.

The Mud Season Madness sounds like madness. I think I can do the 5,000 a day but 10,000 might be a little much. I'm trying to do a few other things instead of just row row row. That said doing another 2K tomorrow..... debating whether I want to row next to the 7:00.00 guy or not.

Alas, I have made a liar out of myself and failed the valentines challenge. I knew I should have finished the row before my brother arrived for a stay with us. Got chatting after dinner and now a) I am too tired (rowed 4000+, jogged and paddleboarded today) and b) hubby is sleeping and rower is in our bedroom, so I have failed to reach the 14,000 (got 8400 in ). Oh well, there are always more challenges. If I had realized it started the ninth I could have easily done it, but I didn't start rowing until yesterday. Congrats to those who completed it. I did at least get in the Carole CTC memoriam row, so the day wasn't a complete washout.
