bit of an update. sometime in the next month (made the appointment 2 months ago and have forgotten when) i have a review with the specialist. so far its been much of the same with multiple pain free days followed by me doing something to twinge it again. will be interesting to see what the dr says. i sort of get the impression they have let me go in the hopes i will tear it completely.
Really gutted about missing the NZ masters games which happened over the last week or so. going by the times i would have got silver in 2 and possibly bronze in 2 (500m, 1000m, 2000m and 10k) the guy who won all the events was by far the best as in 10k at 33min was 10 mins faster than the next guy. 2k was 6:20 next best was 7:13
oh well hopefully im back on board for next years masters

was talking to the ex workmate who tore his off completely and he said the dr at the hospital told him that as he was of a certain age they would not repair the torn tendon but leave it as is. he had to raise hell to get them to do it. hes a similar age to me so i guess i will need to make some noise when i go back to the specialist next month

Re: Bicep distal brachial tendon
I am just reading this thread. It all surprises me as I completely tore/shredded my pectoral muscle a couple years ago when I was 49. I had a major surgery and my left arm was immobilized for some time but I did rehab, healed quicker than planned - stayed fit on a bike etc and was back to light rowing in a few months and back to just about everything including CrossFit in 6 months and got back pretty much all my strength within a year though I don't max lifts anymore. I know friends who have torn the same biceps muscle and all had surgeries and recovered - so to me it seems like you can get it repaired and get back to rowing - would definitely argue with the doctor if saying otherwise.

hi All.. an update
@Keith its not the muscle thats torn its the tendon and yes while they could do a repair they wont as there is no guarantee that A. they can fix it and B if they did there could be un forseen complications.
so i was back at the specialist last week and just confirmed that they wouldnt operate and would leave it to heal itself. when i say heal i mean that the tear will just scar up and not actually heal as such.
going back in 5 months to see if there has been any progress. currently i am in a pain free state with occasional lapses when i do something stupid like lift or move something heavy.... well anything really.
the specialist said that most of these issues occur through a reflex action not a heavy lift as such. this is due to the tendons aging and losing there elasticity.
to be fair i just get the impression they have left me to go and tear it off completely hence justifying the surgical repair
still aiming to be back on the erg in time to compete at next years masters games in Feb

That's a bit discouraging. I hope that you can continue to row/workout without pain and/or completely tearing it. Injuries are frustrating and they seem to come more as we get older. We all do our best to prevent them but it just doesn't matter some times.Dreadfish wrote: ↑March 10th, 2019, 5:52 pmhi All.. an update

Re: Bicep distal brachial tendon
it sure is Keith
but the specialist has told me no arm work at all. i asked about indoor rowing and i also asked about kayaking and it was a big NO to both
