34 canoes....9 paddles...and one bathtub in the Bathtub Brigade! Impressive meterage getting posted!

Some of you may recall the tale of the Veterinary Wellness Check, and subsequent pink scarf, for Kai, aka Thing 1 in my household. A week after the vet visit, I was back at the vet's ER - sure that Kai had something lodged in an airway. Huge whuffs of coughs - and while there was no squeaking, she just couldn't catch her breath well. Ha. Welcome to kennel cough. Ugh. But this dog was vaccinated against that, said I - and the dogs haven't been boarded or around other dogs nose to nose. It's like the common cold or the flu said the vet...you can't vaccinate against all strains of it. Harrumph...or whuff. It's quite contagious, so a week after Thing 1 came down with this...so did Thing 2 (Aerie). Scary sounding stuff, and you can't really do anything for the pups to hasten it along. And they can't go for walks because of the really contagious parts. Ay yi yi. Poor things - can't help them when they get a snoot full, either.

I shared the b&w version of this one with a couple people, and then decided to post this Macanudo comic from January 16...I ordered a copy of the print version to put in my study area. It reminds me of reading Dragonriders of Pern and the whole Anne McCaffrey series. Totally transported me to a world where humans imprinted with their dragons (if they were lucky enough to get a dragon), and dragons protected you from Threadfall. Perhaps some of you have read these too.

And then there is Bizarro...perhaps more relatable...

Didn't think of this, but there is an argument for doing it the wrong way.

Image Another episode...

Sometimes, even in the middle of a Challenge, you need to Get Outside...which is one of the reasons we all work on fitness anyway - so we can DO those other things in our lives that we want to do. Initial plans on this three day weekend had called for a trip to the mountains, and a visit to the Moose Visitor Center at State Forest State Park (since one of my goals for the year is to visit at least 14 Colorado state parks). Cold weather and higher elevations didn't seem right with two dogs with kennel cough, so flexible plans needed.

Bald Eagle Migration Map
Image

Image
...a photo by Al Nesbit of Barr Lake bald eagles

There are resident nesting pairs of bald eagles a relatively short distance from me in Broomfield CO. They are often visible in the skies above, and in their huge nests (said to be the size of a queen-sized bed). Perhaps because we can see them year-round, I hadn't thought about the fact that there is a migratory pattern for bald eagles. News reports of their arrival in the front range area began to surface a couple of weeks ago. Barr Lake State Park is a great gathering spot for them, and I saw upwards of 50 bald eagles there yesterday. Some were fledglings, and their head and tail feathers hadn't turned white just yet. Their wingspan is between 6 and 7 feet - so it's not hard to see them when they are soaring over the lake, or just above the trees.

I was armed with binoculars, heading around the lake on the perimeter path through the Wildlife Refuge - just as I had ridden my bike on that oh-so-heat stroke-inducing ride last summer. Lots of eagles were perched on the ice next to open water on the lake. I could see them well with the binoculars - the photo of them below may be described as "see those little dots? Those are eagles!" Loved the orange footed mallards!

One thing leads to another, which is how these bunny trails work. During the Barr Lake perimeter bike ride last summer, there was a section of the perimeter path that was what path descriptors would call gritty. It's next to a railway, and you just have to work your way around through the gravel, etc. But the railroad, farmers, and water rights all have something to do with how Barr Lake was created. Colorado is home to many historic trails, and one of them is called the Goodnight-Loving Trail. Yep, it's a country song, too. The Goodnight-Loving trail was used by cattlemen to drive from Texas to Wyoming. The area of Barr Lake was at that time more of a buffalo wallow, an area where spring rains filled natural depressions in the plains area. Farmers viewed this area as a natural place for water storage, and formed the Burlington Ditch and Reservoir company in the 1880s. Rail tracks were relocated, the Burlington Ditch constructed, drawing water from the South Platte River. This went into what was then called the Oasis Reservoir and Dam...later called Barr Lake, so named for a railroad official.
