New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Pulling a 7:38 2k' is not too shabby, considering you've not been rowing a full month yet. Whats your height? (important factor) i don't see it in the stats.
A 12 month target could be a sub 7' goal. With the right training and application you could get there i reckon. Or maybe even earlier!!!

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Final attempt on the 10k today aiming for 35:44 (4k @ 1:48, 4k @ 1:47, 2k @ 1:46). Started a wee too fast for 4k, so intentionally slowed down (unintentionally by too much) for 4k, didn't have enough to pull it off in the end. Still got a 20 second PR for 35:56.
Need to invest in a headband. Even with a fan blowing directly on me, my eyes were burning and I had to steal glances at the pacing between closing them completely for the last 2k or so. Also had a few burps in there that could have turned to disasters of the solid/liquid variety. Lots of grunting. Overall a very unpleasant experience.
Rowing is hard, you rowers are insane. Happy 2018.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Hi Jonbar, welcome. I'd say your best bet to get an idea for what a reasonable 12 month target for 2k is, is first of all to try a 2k at max speed and see what you pull. If you've already done 7:38 that's good but it sounds like you might have a bit more left so if it were me I'd go flat out and see what I could do - but plan it so you can be sure to sustain the pace for full 2k. Done properly the 2k is very nasty indeed and I have I think a healthy fear of what it does to my body.
Working on technique is very verey important, and I'd say for two main reasons - 1) so you don't get back problems and 2) so you're maximising efficiency and therefore increasing chance of good times. I don't know very much but this is my advice.
Other than that, just keep going and get more long, slow rows in.

Thanks jimmyshand
Yeah I think my max right now would probably be in the 7.30 range. I will do it some time next week following a decent warm up.
Am really seeing my cycling come on leaps and bounds too, so the two do seem to be complimentary.
Love watching rowing videos on YouTube. There is something. Almost emotional about the places the top guys and girls put themselves into in the course of Olympic dreams...

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Welcome to the forum Jonbar.
12 months is quite a long time in rowing, and you've got a good aerobic base fitness by the sound of things, so that's a big positive. Sub 7 sounds achievable to me, but you will need to stay patient as it's a slow process.
To get used to the pain that you will feel in a 2k do intervals e.g. 5 x 750; 4 x 1,250 etc and some 5k and 6k time trials. Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable is a good way of building your confidence, so you just 'know' you can go faster.
Make sure you work on proper technique and add lower rating sessions, circa 20-22, and not just 28 and above. Having a powerful stroke is important so you don't just rely on your aerobic ability. "If your low rate sessions are too high (fast), your high rates will be too low"- Pete Reed.
All the best and scour the forum for previous questions and answers as there are some gems in here.

Amazing progress! Almost 5 minutes off your PB in less than a year. I'm impressed.
I'm hoping to follow your excellent example in 2019.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Congrats, and when you hit a sub-40 10k, I'm sure it'll be sweet! The only row I can remember from 11 years ago was a 39:56 10k. The last 2 or so minutes were really painful yet I was ecstatic because I knew I was going to make it. After restarting over a year ago my best 10k is 41:45. Dunno if a sub 40 10K is still doable but I'm just happy to do sub 2:00 splits on the longest pieces I can.RayOfSunshine wrote: ↑January 1st, 2019, 3:02 pmSuper stoked... target was <40:20.
