I think it was also a pre-conceived notion of what the ideal man for sport in general should be...and specialization of body type didn't really figure.
Still training or no training, ones build differs a lot, look at kids, they don,t train, but differences in capabilities already are huge.

Woo, an avalanche of comments on my little calculation of W/kg. S'pose I'll keep them to myself in future if it creates such a furore.

I thought it was interesting after looking at this data:

https://sanderroosendaal.wordpress.com/ ... alidation/

Which shows that top rowers have the same W/kg whether HWT or LWT. The implication is that W/kg sets a performance limit on elite rowers, at least. Therefore I think that it is interesting to know where we are relative to that benchmark. Just my opinion... Of course if I weighed 75 or 100kg, I might feel differently  .

Just to comment without being polemical, nobody said that I had to be 5' 4" and 75kg or 100kg. The implicit assumption is that the heavier me also grows to remain in proportion, with the same BF, around 10%.

@hobbit - I'd be lying if I didn't use a basic rule of thumb to compare with HWTs. I just look at the WR for 2K at HWT and LWT and difference is 20s, so I extrapolate from there. Of course different distances will have a different "fudge factor".

Tejay never became a dominant rider, but he's got a fairly recent 5th overall in the TDF, loads of top finishes in professional time trials, and he's just been offered a new pro contract. Point is that Bond beat him in a time trial with a solid amount of climbing -- no way has Hamish lost his muscle mass to the point where he's near Tejay's 72 kilos at 6'1" height. Which is to say that racing doesn't give bonuses for watts to kilos achieved, it's just about who stops the clock first.

Speaking of cycling/rowing crossovers, did Wiggo compete in the BIRC? He bulked up pretty quickly from his ultra-skinny cycling days. He's always entertaining though half of what he says seems to be designed largely for shock value.

Bond lost 10kg, so would be 77 ish right now, if his 87 is correct as a rower. Says he still wants to compete in 2020 in rowing.

Wiggo even had a bit of a belly  cycling for hours and not doing anything with your upperbody can get the weight off pretty good. If you start rowing, difficult not to gain weight from that point.

Lots of TDF riders start out as good timetrialer and get lighter to climb better.

No, there was no Wiggo at BRIC this year. No surprise to me as I don't think he would have enjoyed it much last year. Partly bad luck due to some technical issues/delays when he was on the floor; partly his lack of experience when he reacted to the false start "stop" instruction for the other race, then he tried to make up too much time too quickly when he realised he shouldn't have stopped; but probably mostly because of the ridiculous amount of attention and hype buzzing around him which was many many times that lavished on the very best rowers there including Olympic Gold medal winners. The entourage of photographers/cameramen were 3 or 4 deep around his erg throughout, so the rest of us couldn't see him anyway until he flounced off at the end.

I was slightly disappointed that Greg Rutherford didn't take up the challenge - floated by BR as possible before, but no mention on the day.

I signed up for the EIRC in Feb 2019 so thought I should try another fast 2k today. Decided to go out somewhat cautiously which for me is 1:45 splits and then see how I felt at 1500m. Managed to take 4 seconds off my PB and end up with 6:55.2 so that is quite pleasing as I've only gone below 7 minutes once before and am sensibly scared of the 2k so don't do it much. I thought I could manage maybe 6:56.0 at EIRC so now I'm going to revise that to maybe sub 6:55.0.

As you can see from the splits below I was a bit too cautious early on but I'd rather that than blow out from going out too hard. Last 500m was the stereotypical blurred vision and spitting blood type of thing but once I got within about 400m to go I knew I would be okay. Was pretty nasty but not max nasty. I have of course already updated my sig!

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M

Very nice, good bit left!

Makes sence to do some hard sessions and a few 2k s in the run up to a race. Builds confidence and you get a good feeling what you can do. Well done.

Thanks a lot. The 2k is a humbling experience! I shall try again in a couple of weeks. Maybe!

 its tough, but in the end only a few minutes pain. Certainly after a good result a good experience.

After hitting powerlifting goals mid 2017 (>315/405/500) switched to F45/HIIT cause I was getting fat. Then got more serious about the erg. Gotta stay fit (39yo). Reddit told me I need more steady state and I've listened. Now its payoff time, breaking all my lifetime PRs from 2011-2012.

New PRs in the last month
500 - 1:21.9 :x
2k - 6:37.6
5k - 17:57.3
10k - 37:51.8 (found new max HR 186)
1hr - 15,405m

Fantasizing about <6:30 2k by 12/31/18. Excuse me while I go strap in for another hour of steady state.

Sorry for all of the cycling posts, but this was too good to pass up:

Hamish Bond is definitely well suited to the velodrome -- no weight loss needed! It would be cool if takes down the 1K record ... I think he'd be a contender for the hour record too. Supposedly one of the few events that makes a 2K erg test look like a walk in the park for pain tolerance.

He might have a slim chance at altitude but he's no Wiggins on a bike. Don't forget the latter's HR mark was set with extremely high air pressure too.

That's a solid, tangible gain AND with a buck 40 in the final split... I suggest a 6:52 should come fairly easily.
