I have to agree with Lindsayh... I'm around 104KG and my 10K PB of 38:55.5 was done at DF 145 / 28 SPM. The higher SPM spreads out the load but requires you to do the work with less recovery time. You may need to work up to this with some uptempo sessions.

I suggest trying a 4 x 1500m @ DF 140 / 26 SPM / 1:59 to get started
Yes I am sure you are correct, 20-22 spm and high drag is not the most efficient settings. But it has been very good for my technique, i am still a fairly new rower. And actually my first couple of rows was with a much higher stroke rate, around 29, but with low power output. Now have learned to do a much better pull.

Yesterday I did a 30 minute workout, where i tried fidling around with the drag, and upping the stroke rate.

I know it was a messy workout, and tonight I will try again and see if I can find a good balance. But I must say that the first 8 minutes where i kept a 25 SPM and around 1.53 pace, was much harder, and impossible for me to keep going.

All the more reason why you should work on it! You have got good power at low rates, so when you master good pace at higher rates as well you will make better progress.

Just keep chipping away at it with interval sessions that fit into your current ability. It's very beneficial being able to row equally comfortably, relatively speaking, at r20 and r30

Went for a 2k best today. Started out too fast and spent the last 4 minutes watching the average 500 pace slowly climb up from 1:37.5 but managed to keep it under 1:40 at the finish (not by much). 6:39.x, met my goal time, almost passed out and vomited simultaneously. Trachea feels like I've been inhaling sandpaper for the last 48 hours. Someone send help. Will not be doing that again.

Hahaha, great write up and really well done. I know what that feel like when you are clinging on for dear life!!

eengg - nice 2k and glad you are still alive!

I went for a faster 10k today from cold and managed it in 38:57.1 which is a PB though I've not been keeping track much of 10k and this was not max effort but all the same good to do it and hit my weekly metres target. This wasn't 'give up, you're gonna die' tough, more like 'I can't keep this going forever but I think I'll make it with my lungs somewhat intact' tough. Pleased with the effort and the pacing.

Usain bolt ..unfair, legs to long.
Highjumpers unfair, to long.
Shotputters, to strong.

On the other hand, cyclist, weighting nothing uphill, fair ofcourse.
Marathon runners ditto.
Gymnasts, being 4 feet something great.

Bizar thinking, sports is by definition unfair, the best are build for it. Deal with what you have.

If Hobbit really would weight 100kg at his height, he would be a lot slower with all the fat he needed to drag around :roll:

Interestingly enough (well, for me anyway haha) if you wind back the clock to early 20th century and before, alot of athletes looked very similar despite the event. Specialization of body types came later...

FWIW the watts/performance with body weight factored in (beyond LWT / HWT) is something that would greatly benefit me BUT I'm not sure it's a road we should go down beyond anything for a bit of fun. If you feel hard done by maybe post your running/cycling etc times in your signature? :wink:

In those day, training was not allowed, was seen as cheating... workman could not compete, because they did "train"

I think it was also a pre-conceived notion of what the ideal man for sport in general should be...and specialization of body type didn't really figure.

Did you guys follow Hamish Bond's performance at the cycling world championship time trial? He finished just ahead of Tejay Van Garderen, who is nearly the same height as Bond and about 25 kilos lighter I think — a big advantage on a course with some significant climbing. Still, no medals awarded for "best performance by an overly muscular ex-rower." So it goes.

Mark, he lost a lot of weights to get there. He tolded his wife much more liked his rowing build.

Hamish came over to the UK a few years back to cut his teeth in domestic TTs. He did well straight away with his great engine and had alot of help with his aerodynamics. I doubt very much his physique is quite the same now. Furthermore, TJ although has shown some flashes of brilliance (and not really at TTs) has never really lived up to the hype.
