Captain, my Captain,

Why don't you try strapless barefoot ( without the shoes, maybe with socks? )!
This will solve all your 'shoe' and 'strap' problems and will improve your techmique.

It works for me!!

And Tim,

Row on Man!

Go Team!!

Tyn

Ducks are GO!!

Hi Tyn,

I tried without shoes, but the problem's really my feet, not my shoes. Just the plastic band across the back of my foot was the most uncomfortable option - wouldn't even dare try it without socks. I have to be careful with shoes, too, and I really prefer backless shoes.

So, the method I came up with seems to be the closest to rowing in shoes with no backs - no pressure to that part of my foot = no discomfort.

If the strap were made of a different material, now...maybe something padded and cushiosny, or that gel stuff...I'd be willing to try rowing without shoes again.

Emilia

This is exaggerated by the fact i sit on seat pads. So I tend to bring the heel cups up to the point where the strap barely allows me to get up to the catch. I often have to swap between the two discomforts - feet too low or heel too inflexible (which rubs my heels too.)

When it gets to be too much - I have taken my shoes out of the straps - kind of wedged them into the heel-cup (set 'high') and oddly this gives me all the flexibility i need in the heel. I also have to select shoes without 'hard' heels. (Meaning I've got my favorite erg shoes - and have had others that are unacceptable - so you might actually find some nice soft shoes that work.)

I've often thought of just putting a loop over the top of the foot stretchers to have my own 'straps' set up a little higher. A friend of mine toyed with the idea of attaching bike clips to her erg.
I have a nice gel squishy thing as a wrist rest for my computer. I had to cut it in half because I have a split keyboard. I am please to say the "goo" did not ooze out.

I wonder if a wrist rest could be put at the back of the plastic foot holder?
I'll give it a try and report in.

Susan

They are perfect for the boat - because they don't slip and are cheap and easy to replace.

Interesting topic, because I would like to row shoeless-but-with-socks, too, but that back strap for the heel is sharp and ouchy, even with my thick wool socks. So maybe if bubblewrap works as a substitute for a seat pad, maybe I could try wrapping some of that around that offending back strap? Or maybe a 2" ace wrap? I kinda liked that "sling" idea that tjod posted a link for, also.

If all else fails, I could try DUCK tape!

--Jen in WI
WTG, Qwacky!

Nice job piling up those meters for the JVTC, Pat. You've been a great cheeleader and inspiration, and I appreciate it!

And you too, Tyn---Keep up your hard work, too! Like Pat says, it's all going to help in the big picture of things where your health and well-being are concerned. It took me about a good 4-6 weeks of steady work before I really started to solidly feel the benefits of what I was doing, but once that happened, I was HOOKED! And when I want to wallow in laziness instead of rowing or doing some kind of workout, I get on these forums and read. It certainly helps, hey?

GO DUCKS! GO FOWL PLAY!!

--Jen in WI

Congratulations on reaching 4 MM, Tyn!

I just reached 2 MM today - it only took me 3 years. I'm hoping I continue to row on a regular basis after this challenge is over, so the next 2 million won't take so long.

Does anyone have any ideas what I should do for the next 5-6 weeks when I will be away from my rower? I know how easy it is to get into the NOT-exercising routine.

Emilia

..and for anyone who doesn't think that he/she is an athlete..think again..we are champions as well as athletes in our own right. This challenge proves it in my opinion.Look at the list of participants and the consistency of meters rowed..every day. From the bottom of the list to the top.Impressive from where I am sitting. We have about 12 days to go..stay strong..take a break if needed..listen to your body.I know that I have to row much stronger the longer I row to keep my heart rate in my optimal zone. That is a great marker of fitness improvement. My heart rate is slower and after a row..the rate decreases rather quickly. So we all need to reevaluate our goals and fitness levels.great for the heart!!Ok..off the soap box..GO TEAM!!!!!!!

Pat M.
