Congratulations Ed on 52 million meters !!!
I hope you know I was only pulling your leg about lifetime meters needing to surpass the outside temperature :) .
(By the way, another good reason not to volunteer for a mission to Venus.)
Something I just remembered: was there a follow-up story to whether you got to do something with the University of Washington crew team?
Thanks Dan! Temps are finally going down 105-110’s. I did get to row with some of the team. We rowed 4men and 8men. 2000 meters each contest. I was able to keep up with them. Got VERY TIRED at the end. Will definitely do it again. A lot more fun on the water!

My wife and I have pads from 2K Fit that seem to work well. The 2" and 3" pads are quite comfortable.
Those all look good to me.
For gloves, I know quite a few team members swear by the NewGrips (https://www.amazon.com/NewGrip-Gym-Glov ... B00IMOS5J4). I've used Harbinger Pro gloves, which aren't described as being especially applicable to rowing, but worked fine for me (https://www.amazon.com/Harbinger-Non-Wr ... B01HK1BMCG).
There has been quite a bit of discussion about posterior cushioning on this forum, especially for really long rows, including pads, towels, and bubble-wrap. I'm pretty sure that Thor and Ed still use (and would recommend) a folded towel. But, as I recall them talking about it, the words "folded towel" fall far short of a description - I believe there was a delicate balance of physics and voodoo in the proper towel selection and folding technique, and we might even get one of them to fess up about the best choice of fabric softener :) .
I never had the problem with heel rubbing. The suggested fixes sounded good to me. But you might also want to search the forums by typing the word "heel" into the search box in the upper right of the page. Heel lift is something that people try to correct in their technique. Since heel rubbing seems to suggest some amount of heel lift, you might want to check out what others have said about heel lift.

Hey guys.

Doing some catch up here. K2 sounds like a great ride, sorry the weather wasn’t great.
Master Ed, 52 mills … wow!
Well, I don’t do the mysterious towel fold anymore and haven’t for a while. It did help some but blisters were still coming up. A while back I ordered 2 of the thin cheap pads from C2. I just had to change one recently. I started using two at a time but that didn’t work well. I then just used one to rode that for over a year I think. Just changed it a few weeks ago. It is probably the cheapest option and I sure won’t say the best butt, it worked well enough for me. Next time I will likely buy a better one that’ll last longer.

I used to lift my heel when rowing and I hardly do now. I think I get more power from driving off the whole foot rather than the toes then laying down the heel. I’m no expert so take that for what it’s worth.
A week before the FTC, I tried rowing barefoot for 2K and had a nasty blister and got a band aid similar to what Norma suggested. Worked great for me I didn’t have to stop rowing. Try tightening the shoes? Or just keep the heels down flat and work on ankle flexibility.

I tried some tender gloving care but it just didn’t work for me. I even wrapped a towel around the handle for a while. I just row bare handed and file as required. Be sure to towel off the handle after every use to keep the rubbery feeling to help with the grip. Pulling evenly keeps the handle from slipping out of your hands. I only grip with my fingers and not with my palms. Like a claw I guess.

Hope something here helps.

Keep on Rock’n.

I used a folded towel for a long time. When I was back in the states I bought the K2 foam pad... fully endorse this product. It helps on the long rows! I also use harbinger pro gloves, they are very comfortable and last a long time, well built glove.

Happy Rowing,

Ed

Fueling strategies

Post by TallErgs » September 24th, 2018, 3:15 pm

What fueling strategies are people using for high meter days? I'm consuming over 4,000 kcal every day to keep going, and I suspect that isn't enough. I break my rowing up into a ton of 30 to 40 minute sessions, with hydration and food in a rest period between each. It seems to be largely working, but my weight is fluctuating by over 5lbs every day (dipping lower than I like to see in the morning).

Also, congrats on the 52 million meter mark Ed - that's absolutely amazing!

As for hydration strategies, the image below says it all. It will not help with the weight fluctuations but at least you will not be dipping lower.

That helps! I just have to guess who the avatar belongs to - and in this instance, I wasn’t guessing right! Thanks!

When Virtual and Real Time Collide!

Post by just27 » September 24th, 2018, 7:54 pm

AJ and I are looking forward to hanging with Kona2, this week, when we pass through Denver.
I'm wondering if she'll insist on us pulling some Challenge meters, while we're there ...

Guys, this morning I did a nice 12K but the ErgData app on my iPhone didn't see it and looks like I lost it. Do you know a way to recover it from Erg one way or another? It's never happened before. I had to leave for work so didn't have much to tinker with it. Hope it's a one off thing.

I've been thinking about buying the cable for my PM3 so I could use the ErgData app. Now I'm not so sure.

Up until now, I've always uploaded directly from the PM3 to the Logbook. Never lost anything that way. I believe the data should still be on your log card (assuming the card is in the PM3 when you row with the app).

Just press the menu button on the performance monitor and you'll be able to see your workouts. You can always enter your erg session data manually into the logbook, or if your PM monitor has a USB port on the back, you can save the data to the flash drive and then upload it from your computer. I've only had one episode of losing the data sync to ErgData. I believe others (Minnie?) have had more issues with it. I still like to use the app - and it loads directly into Strava as well. It was just a technological hiccup!

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 9.24.18

Post by Kona2 » September 25th, 2018, 10:23 am

Image Image ...hooyah! Good work!

The Lunie Fall Challenge Team is now 81 strong and locked in a battle to stay in the top ten of all teams competing in the Challenge. For those interested in staying in the top ten percent individually, your meter reading needs to be greater than 81,500. Btw, Ed and Zach are in the top ten of all 5500 individuals in the Challenge. This is also the part where I say be careful with a sudden exponential increase in your meter production - even if you are breaking the meter amounts into multiple sessions daily, you can end up sidelining yourself for many weeks with inflammation. As you get tired, your form slips...and that leads to injury. We would much rather keep you active long term than see any of you flame out. This has been a teammate safety message.

MILESTONES...Bragging Rights...Celebrations:

3.0 MM Ed
