Hi Team,

Surpassed 52 million lifetime meters on tonight’s row. My goal for the challenge is to row a marathon a day. Time will tell - the buttocks are doing a lot of talking. Temps at work are in the 130’s... so nice to come to the air conditioning. Something a little different during my Rowing time I am listening to podcast on many different subjects all people all walks of life we all have opinions - all good, take in what you want and discard the rest. It has been enjoyable!

Happy Rowing,

Ed

As a side note Zach was asking about heel rubbing - I have not had that problem. Anybody have this issue? What was the fix...

Ed, 52 million lifetime meters is pretty amazing.
Is that a heat index above 130 F? Sounds pretty dangerous to me.

Zach, I experienced heel rubbing recently and developed a pretty nasty blister on one foot. I used Band-Aid Hydro-Seal Extreme blister cushions. They are a little pricey but they stay on through showering. Once the blister healed, I haven't had any further problem (same shoes).

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll see if I can find them in a store. So far, I've been having good luck with petroleum jelly between my heel and my sock. That's taken away all of the 'hot spots'. I'm just excited to be contributing to the fall team challenge this year!

ImageImage ...Lunie Fall Challenge Team is on fire!!

Welcome to new teammate John L! We wish you much camaraderie and many good erging sessions!

Image
Still at least a couple weeks before the leaves begin to fall in big batches (please don't let this be famous last words)...but you know Fall is here when the low temperature is at 46 instead of an expected 56 F! Brrisk.

Image
Meanwhile, the moon is shining brightly from several locations in our Lunaverse! Ed and Zach (TallErgs) both contributed full marathons (also known as a full moon here in Lunie land), and Louis has a half moon or half marathon. Miles the meter man has a 50K day (which might be a combo), but that ranks as a supernova! Lots of good participation throughout the team - we value EVERY meter.

Thank You and a Question or Two

Post by mathineer » September 22nd, 2018, 12:37 pm

First I'd like to thank Kona2, DanWho, and anyone else involved in the management of this team! The daily postings of meters are hugely motivating. They are the main reason I moved my affiliation to this group (well that and a natural affinity for Luny-ness).

When I push my rows much past 5 or 6Km, my butt starts getting a little sore. I'm looking at this pad in hopes it will help.
https://www.amazon.com/Hornet-Waterspor ... ackin04-20
has anyone else used this, or have a recommendation?

Also, I get pretty bad callouses on my hand. Looking at these gloves.
https://www.amazon.com/Rowing-Gloves-Ho ... atersports

Again, have you used or can you recommend?

Thanks in advance,
mathineer

My wife and I have pads from 2K Fit that seem to work well. The 2" and 3" pads are quite comfortable.

Those all look good to me.
For gloves, I know quite a few team members swear by the NewGrips (https://www.amazon.com/NewGrip-Gym-Glov ... B00IMOS5J4). I've used Harbinger Pro gloves, which aren't described as being especially applicable to rowing, but worked fine for me (https://www.amazon.com/Harbinger-Non-Wr ... B01HK1BMCG).
There has been quite a bit of discussion about posterior cushioning on this forum, especially for really long rows, including pads, towels, and bubble-wrap. I'm pretty sure that Thor and Ed still use (and would recommend) a folded towel. But, as I recall them talking about it, the words "folded towel" fall far short of a description - I believe there was a delicate balance of physics and voodoo in the proper towel selection and folding technique, and we might even get one of them to fess up about the best choice of fabric softener :) .
I never had the problem with heel rubbing. The suggested fixes sounded good to me. But you might also want to search the forums by typing the word "heel" into the search box in the upper right of the page. Heel lift is something that people try to correct in their technique. Since heel rubbing seems to suggest some amount of heel lift, you might want to check out what others have said about heel lift.

Congratulations Ed on 52 million meters !!!
I hope you know I was only pulling your leg about lifetime meters needing to surpass the outside temperature :) .
(By the way, another good reason not to volunteer for a mission to Venus.)
Something I just remembered: was there a follow-up story to whether you got to do something with the University of Washington crew team?

I've gone through a couple of sets of "New Grips," over the years. They work well, for me. (Plus, you can wrap any hot spots on your fingers, with athletic tape.)

Our erg has a "Sore No More" pad on the C2 seat ... AND, a gel pad on top of the Sore No More! The name of the gel pad has long since worn off, but it's similar in shape to the Skwoosh pads, on Amazon.

This is the Sore No More pad:
