Week 3...day 2 or 3 (hemisphere dependent!)...

Today being Thursday means the UPS stork is bringing danwho his new bike erg...and I am sure anticipation abounds! There is nothing quite like seeing the big Concept2 box arrive at your door....except for maybe when you drag the thing into your house (or take it out of the box on your porch..and then drag it into your house). We await the details of your new bike steed, danwho!

Welcome to new teammate Trevor! We wish you much good camaraderie and many good erging sessions!

Image (Note: Working through this out loud, in a way!) There's a lot of angst that bike erg meters produce when we put the numbers from a bike erg session right next to a rowing machine set of numbers. It doesn't seem fair that similar time efforts should produce such different numbers, and this has led to Concept2 making changes to how it credits bike erg meters in Challenges. The motivation that we get from the numbers clicking by on the Concept2 PM is one of the best - I could ride a gym bike for 30 minutes and not get nearly the sense of accomplishment that I get when I get the immediate feedback of meter numbers. Same is true for rowing machines.

Haven't quite figured out how to calibrate what a half moon (or half marathon) would equate to for the bike erg. Using the Concept2 Challenge calibration, it would make sense to suggest that we use a full moon distance to give a half moon to bike erg meters since bike erg challenge meters are halved when applied to the honor board. The ranking distances and times are naturally different for the bike erg. I think the ranking distance of 40,000 m is probably the closest thing to a half marathon - and is similar in amount of time that it takes to complete (or so it appears). I haven't done that distance all in one session just yet, but am working up to it.

You can't coast on a bike erg, nor do you get the benefit of a few extra revolutions of the wheels that you do when biking on the two wheel variety. Equally, I can't just take my hands off the handlebars for minutes at a time and just pedal on the outside bike, so the outside bike provides a better balance of upper body usage into the mix. We'll see how effective using the bike erg is towards helping me be ready for an outside bike event!

Minnie really does have the right blend of bike erg and rowing machine use, and yep - I've said that before. The more I bike erg, the more I know it's true that mixing the two erg machines will provide me more of a total body workout. Heart rate gets into the target zone with both machines, but perception of exertion (and number of muscles engaged) is very different.

while rowing today i was wondering if folks who own concept2 equipment name it and.....if yes......what do you name it???
Mine is the old Grey Mare and Janice’s is the Black Stallion.
I have a buddy who calls his Eddy the Erg. He is from GBR and it sort of reminds me of Eddy the Eahel. I sure hope I’m not the only one who remembers him. Grin.

Keep on rock’n and roll’n.

Workout Types

Post by Thor MW » August 16th, 2018, 11:06 am

Hey guys

K2 talking about bike and rowing reminded me of something.

If you go to the standings page.
https://log.concept2.com/affiliation/1092/season/2019

At the top of the page there’s a combo box where you can choose the workout type. This now ranks your meters against the others. In other words, I am a rower and if I look at the page right now I am in 17 place when the box is set to all types. When I change to indoor rowers and hit the filter button I am now in 14 place. I know that this is due to a few with the bike erg having more meters on that machine then the rower.

I won’t say if I think one is fair or not. It doesn’t matter to me. Thanks to being able to sort by various categories I can see who is doing what to get their meters. Frankly I’d love to try the bikeerg and the skierg. I think that would be a great setup having all three. Switch off every workout. I would love to see the shape I’d be in then. Not that I’m not a stunningly studly Mighty Thor now but really!
Ok, so I’m maybe not all that stunning now but working on it. Grin.

Keep on Rock’n & roll’n
Hmm, skierg. How do I fit that in too. Bobb’n? Pull’n? Hall’n?

I have not named mine yet. Some days after a tough workout, the Erg would be called something that would be inappropriate to be displayed in this forum.

Some Possible Names:
  • Erg-o-Nomic
    Erg-o-Maniac
Erg Miser (remember Heat Miser/Cold Miser from the Christmas Classic)
    Like a VErgan (For newcomers)
    Erg Way To Heaven

Congratulations Ed !!! 2 MM !!!!!

Thanks for some of those name suggestions, Louis. Like a VErgan ... that will be me on my new BikeErg.
The BikeErg actually arrived yesterday, a day earlier than the initial UPS estimate. I decided to work from home yesterday - for which the UPS driver was very grateful - he was surprised how heavy that box was. Assembly took a little while - but K2's post forewarned me about that. The only part that truly gave me pause was pushing the PM5 into the handlebar unit. The picture made it look like you could just push it in. But I was lucky to maybe push it 1 or 2 mm into that unit. I reluctantly decided that I'm not going to get this in without a hammer, although I didn't want a hammer anywhere near the PM5 (sorry Thor, not that I have anything against hammers). Took several careful taps to the PM5 swivel joint housing - not near electronics -it's in, and it's never coming out. So, now I guess it's time to ease into the new saddle - like a VErgan.
I am looking forward to fitting the BikeErg into a different cross-training regimen. I also thought a new toy might provide some extra motivation when I didn't feel like getting out of bed to get in my row before work. Still hoping that, but it didn't work this morning.

I had trouble with getting the PM5 onto handlebar unit as well. I think that was one of the “this is making me work hard enough to sweat” moments...and there was a bit of trouble when I could have used an extra set of hands or a bike stand to hook the frame together. I didn’t have to use a hammer, and that assembly actually does loosen up eventually- just not quickly.

Hope you have downloaded the Erg Data app. I have the phone cradle that sits on top of the PM5 - really helpful.

Inaugural rides are tougher than you might imagine.

Danwho, Forgiven. Says the Mighty Thor.
Is the seat one of those little skinny things that makes the bike an extension of you?

I'm not getting email notifications when new posts are made anymore. Anyone else having this problem? Also I get taken to an error screen every time I post. Not sure if some posts got through or not. I did say way to go Master Ed but I don't see that message. Oh hum.

Your posts are there Thor. That debug screen that comes up is kind of odd. Maybe I’ll ask them why it does that.

Thor -

There's a setting section next to notifications and private messages in the part that shows your sign in name and photo if you've got one on your profile. In that setting section you can select when you want to get notifications by email, etc.

As for the error screen, that seems to have been resolved! I didn't get the error with today's posting.
