I raced triathlon for 17 years until during a USAT National championship I was T-boned by a careless USAT "safety" official on a very large motorcycle. Ir resulted in destroying my hip. It took a year to heal to the point I could get a hip replacement. I elected to get a HIP RESURFACING instead. This was four years ago and it's doing wonderful!! I recovered to the point of starting to race again but for obvious reasons decided not to enter any of the USAT events, which is just about any tri in the States. It left a big hole in my competitive spirit.
After all that said, I took up rowing two years ago and love it! The damage left me with flexibility problems which rowing has greatly helped. Started racing last year.
It is a 32 mm metal on metal BioMet device. I chose the large head M on M device because of all the restrictions on a conventional replacement. Before taking up any strenuous activity one must discuss it with their doc/surgeon! For me, rowing has been nothing but winning situation.

I had a hip replacement 6 years ago. I told the surgeon of my intention to continue rowing, and he tweaked the angles, or whatever, to help at the compressed catch particularly. I have been rowing or erging for 30 minutes daily since then with no problems.
Have fun.
