Schuylkill Navy Regatts

No, ergs don't yet float, but some of us do, and here's where you get to discuss that other form of rowing.

Schuylkill Navy Regatts

Post by Edward4492 » June 17th, 2018, 6:18 pm

Haven't been posting much, zero erging and 100% OTW since April. Lots of work in the 1X and 2x. Went to Calm Waters Rowing back in May with four team mates; highly recommended. Me and Marianne did our first race of the season in the 2x yesterday. There were (12) Masters in the Mixed 2x event, the heats broke kinda weird for us as it was only two boats. We were pitted against a very fast Whitemarsh boat and got totally smoked. Had a good day regardless as we went way faster than expected. Last year our best was 4:28, target for this year was 4:20. We ended up with a 4:05. Splits looked like this:
100m 2:06
200m 1:52
300m 1:56
400m 1:57
500m 1:57
600m 2:00
700m 2:04
800m 2:03
900m 2:05
1000m 2:03

We had been hitting 2:06-08 in practice, so we went out way too hard. With that said, I decided not to back off the pace. I figured what the hell, let's just stay on it and hang on as long as possible. And we didn't exactly die, just faded to something we could carry to the finish. Overall, a good race for us.

Next up is Independence Day Regatta. Glen if your reading shoot me an email (edwardpeterson@hotmail.com). I see Ashville is signed up, let me know if you're coming. Plan on being at Diamond States also.

That was a good race. You beat your practice pace. Even at the end you were faster than the practice pace, so I wouldn't call it a fly and die. It's amazing what you can do in a race sometimes.

Ed, nice job! I was racing as well. I was in the 2x and the 4x but didn't win any races. It was a long day but a lot of fun!

Bill, are you going to IDR? Also, what's your new team.
Thanks Paul, the current accounted for some of the time pick up; but we were going way harder than our practice runs and way faster than last year on the same river with some current. As you know lots on variables on the water.

Great going Ed! Nice to do well better than planned!

I have my last sprint race this weekend - the Masters SE Regionals. In 6 races over the weekend. Don’t think I’m making it up your way this year.I’ve been at it pretty hard since January - our first regatta was in februrary. Kind of pooped. And my wife is wondering where all this is going. A small group is going though. I think we will have a mixed 4, a pair and maybe a mixed quad - all the same group of 5 rowers going up.

If I can find your club I'll stop by and say hello. Our season just started, sounds like you've had a fair amount of success. Maybe I'll come down next year when we're freezing up here!

I will be at IDR, racing for Undine.

Had our last sprint regatta - Southeast Regionals - in steamy Agusta GA. It was my last as a novice too. I was in 6 boats over the weekend:

- started with a men’s 8+ race. Lost a pretty fast race against Jacksonsville and got 2nd. The boat rowed real well p, just. It fast enough.
- then a men’s 4+. We were in a rental boat and borrowed a cox but still managed to row nicely and got second again to a faster Jacksonville boat. It was another close race.
- ended the day in a mixed 8+. That one should have done very well but we had lots of distractions and I think we lost the focus and desire we needed to put the hammer down. Not a good result on that one. Went to bed a little down about it.

Next day was sculling, which I am less confident. Rowed a men’s double, a men’s quad and a mixed double all to mediocre results. But with those I didn’t have any expectations, so had a good time anyway.

So, and recognizing that you guys up north have a much deeper pool of talent that wouldn’t allow these results, I ended up my novice year in boats that got 4 firsts, 3 seconds and 3 thirds. Am really excited now to pull back and learn how to Scull better in particular and getting back in the weight room for a few months.
