Re: What music do you row to?
I forgot to add that the reason that I was so knackered was the fault of SSR too. He had given the whole team a talk, the day before the competitions. One of the things that he said was that there is an energy which he called the 'alactic' energy which he likened to the easy first several strides of a longish run. You feel easy and you move well. A little later common sense takes over and you adjust to your race pace. He said that this energy was free and available to us at the start of our races and, if we did not use it, it was lost, no longer available. So he suggested an all out eight to ten strokes at the start.
Most people do something similar at the start of a race but not absolutely flat out. Any, I took him at his word and really went for those first few strokes. By the time I got to 500m, I was sure that was an error. How I got to 1400m is beyond me. It was probably the fact that I knew that he was behind me watching. And then he drove in the final coffin nail.
To be fair, the difference between Olympians and the rest of man/woman kind is that they ignore the voices that shout 'STOP, YOU WILL KILL YOURSELF'. The rest of us tend to listen. So he was almost certainly (almost?) correct. I just didn't have the willpower to do that last 600 without a pause.

Thanks Stu! Still training just trying to build rather than striving for PBs at the moment. I know the 8k in 30' will come this year...Dangerscouse wrote:Good.to have you back posting again RobRWAGR wrote:Pop or pop-punk for sprints and test pieces. Audiobooks, podcasts, or musicals for SS.

Good idea. Build the foundations and the PBs will come. It can be tough to be patient but it's essential in the long run.

Very wise Rob. I'm doing the same (which must mean I'm wise too ) as I think I burnt out on my last attempts at a 2k. Working my way up to a full marathon in a few months time.RWAGR wrote:Thanks Stu! American country music (I know it's a bit weird, specially beeing Spanish )
Re: What music do you row to?
Me too...some Foo Fighters as well for short hard pieces. For longer rows like 10K or 60 min, I like to veg out to some jazz like Keith Jarrett solo piano, Esbjorn Svenson Trio and Go Go Penguin.JerekKruger wrote:Tool and Led Zeppelin are my two go-tos.

I use Queens of the Stone Age Songs for the Deaf for shorter harder interval sessions. Haven't listened to the Foo Fighters in ages, perhaps I should change that.T_M wrote:Me too...some Foo Fighters as well for short hard pieces. Eagles of Death Metal are worth a listen if you haven't heard them Tom. The name is misleading!JerekKruger wrote:

If you haven't already have a listen to Portico Quartet and Mammal Hands. Both similar to Go Go Penguin.T_M wrote:I like to veg out to some jazz like Keith Jarrett solo piano, Esbjorn Svenson Trio and Go Go Penguin.

Re: What music do you row to?
One of the main reasons I got a rower for the house is because I'd had enough of the noise they would play at my local gym. If you think doing a 50K row is painful... Try it while being forced to listen to 4 continuous hours of screeching distorted, ****** sounding pop music on a completely under-powered PA system that's cranked to 10. Its pure torture.
That said, I usually listen to MLB baseball games while doing my long rows (HM or longer) and nothing on shorter rows.

@ T_M also worth having a listen to Jessica Lauren and her previous band Jessica Lauren Four. Both great albums
