Generally you breathe out as you apply force or what is called the positive part of the lift. Taking bench press as an example, You breathe in as the bar is coming down to your chest and out as you apply force to press the weight back up. Now back to rowing. As you are returning to the catch position, you are bunched up and your belly is against your thighs. Having air in you at this point isn’t always comfortable and you may not be able to maximize the stroke. So breathe out as your belly is coming close to and making contact with your legs. Now here is the reverse for me. As you begin the stroke, pushing with your legs, you breathe in. Breathe out again as you finish the stroke while you are pulling with your arms. During the recovery, as you move forward, breathe in and then out as your legs are making contact with your belly again.

I practiced this last night. I found the rhythm and kept it going. Time will tell if this will benefit me but I have to say, it was nice having no air in me at the catch. Unless I was going all out, previously I would breathe in during the recovery and breathe out during the stroke. So, one breath per stroke. When I was going hard, I

would still have a load of air at the catch to blow out as I pushed with my legs. I prefer rowing on an empty stomach. This isn’t practical right now. I must row before bed so I have a load of food in my belly and add to that air in the belly and it makes for a rather uncomfortable session at times.

If you only get one point from this, make this your take away, never hold your breath! If you find you are making a lot of throat noises while going hard, check to see if you are breathing. You probably aren’t you are probably closing up your throat to make the kind of noises that makes your neighbors wonder just what you are up to. Keep your throat open and the neighbors won’t be quite so envious. Just like that, I go from the Mighty Thor to Mr. Rogers.

Keep on rock’n my friends.
Once upon a time, I tried to pay attention to my breathing. But I guess I didn't stick to it long enough for it to become ingrained. Trying to do it now would only distract from my Netflix viewing.

Nice to see you rowing more regularly, Mighty Thor. Hope you're taking it easy on the shoulder.

thanks for the breathing tips and nice to read about different alphabets and hidden messages :]

Hey Row sis. Yep, gotta keep an eye on those net flicks. Grin. I just finished rowing and the shoulder is holding. After my 5K UT2 I did a 1K. Yesterday if I tried to pull 2:00 pace it started to give me some sharp pain. I pulled a 2:02.2 tonight and it held up pretty well. I still have to baby it but at least I am able to do more. The Mighty Thor just might be mighty again ... eventually. I saw some workouts I'd love to try but have to wait until the shoulder is finished it's little tantrum. I will write about the workouts as I try them. On day 2 that breathing thing is quite natural. I didn't have to think about it hardly at all. So, who says a Thor can't learn new tricks.

Have fun and keep on rock'n folks.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 3.18.18

Post by Kona2 » March 19th, 2018, 12:36 pm

Image Day 19 or 20 of 31....Mudslingers Unite!

Image Day 5 or 6 of 32 !! And we're in SIXTH place!! Thanks to all who have signed on to the Lunie WEC team to erg with us!!

Image Time is tick, tocking away in the Challenge (and not a minute too soon some who have been erging DAILY without a break in the action are likely thinking). Is the Lure of Free Loot slipping away? It's clear that we need to point out that the fewer the participants on a given day, the higher the probability that YOU could win. And why not.

5 K total participation = 2,339 people with (34) Lunies
10 K total participation = 782 people with (17) Lunies

Have the Lunies drawn their line in the sands of the Universe? A line that says we're staying put in this Challenge? We shall see!!!

Image
"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?" Evil laughter precedes this chilling question in the old time radio show "The Shadow." These episodes ran from 1930 to the 1950s and featured the wealthy Lamont Cranston (Orson Welles) and his sidekick Margot Lane (Agnes Moorehead). In the write up on Old Time Radio Shows, the Shadow is described: "A figure never seen, only heard, the Shadow was an invincible crime fighter. He possessed many gifts which enabled him to overcome any enemy. Besides his tremendous strength, he could defy gravity, speak any language, unravel any code, and become invisible with his famous ability to "cloud men's minds." Along with his team of operatives, the Shadow battled adversaries with chilling names like The Black Master, Kings of Crime, The Five Chameleons, and, of course, The Red Menace." Only Lamont's trusty sidekick Margot (this was well before Lara Croft) knew that he was indeed The Shadow.
While all of this stuff predates us, this is a good series...and I bet our parents knew all about it. Since the episodes appear to be in the half hour range, I'm going to give a couple of them a try while erging since we've got plenty of evil floating about the Universe. I've downloaded the episode of Death From The Deep. Besides, we are still a few months away from the release of the next RCN series audiobook.

Image But first, there was some of this to do. Several inches of snow on the deck and patio made for some wahoo moments. Amazingly, I opened the garage to discover a clear driveway and sidewalks. Bless the southern exposure. Alas, my neighbor across the street who is recovering from heart valve replacement (we joke that he is part pig now...snort) had a driveway full of the white stuff, and a doctor's appointment to get to...grab the shovel. And yep, I DO feel good about getting an opportunity to help a neighbor. Find a way.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled stat-cast:

ImageImage The Two-Fer Continues!!

Where else can we get meters that are both mudslingers AND seeking world erg domination?!! Wait....don't answer that.

Image Day 20 or 21 of 31...
Today is all about the 7 percent solution...as there's a 7 percent drop in the total number of 5K participants from just yesterday's totals. Kind of like a slow leak. Pssssst. Lunies holding strong with 34 in the 5K group.

On the 10K total participation, we've dropped another 4% from yesterday's totals, and lost one Lunie participant (at least for the moment). We have 16 Lunies in for the longer distance.
