reading the book Row Daily, Breathe Deeply, Live Better. Enjoying the book - although there's a great deal of the book committed to technique. And while it does reassure me that what I learned for Paul Smith more than 15 years ago - it's not particularly beneficial to experienced rowers. Not a complaint ( actually, I think the recommendations are spot on) just not needed for my purposes. On the otherhand, the author makes a convincing argument for daily rowing - which - happens to coincide with my current Mud Challenge effort.
So, anyway, that's my update.

I row in the evening after my kids go to bed, I'll get day 2 done tonight. When I bought our rower a few weeks ago my goal was daily rowing so the Mud Madness Challenge is perfect! I came into the season quite late but I think I can make it to half a million meters before the reset. We will see, it's a pretty lofty goal!lhaymond wrote:2 of 25 in the books

Re: Forum Flyers
Tried a 30' steady state row on Saturday: was supposed to be a 18 - 22 rate experiment, hoping to work in the aerobic HR bands. Found the rates at 20 and below just too difficult. Was struggling with the pause / recovery stage. Also, may have had the drag too high (111) for me at 18spm: could really feel the extra force required to accelerate the wheel. So, it turned out as this:
Time, Distance, Pace, SPM
30:00, 6182, 2:25.1, 21
5:00, 999, 2:30.1, 18
10:00, 1032, 2:25.3, 21
15:00, 1024, 2:26.4, 21
20:00, 1028, 2:25.9, 22
25:00, 1034, 2:25.0, 23
30:00, 1066, 2:20.7, 25
A new PB, beating my previous 6087 (which wasn't a strong PB for me anyway). HR: min 90, avg 151, max 172 (eek).
Today, it was the turn of the SkiErg. Tried the CTC on it:
Interval 1, 15:00, 2556, 2:56.0, 42
Interval 2, 15:00, 2593, 2:53.5, 44
(I struggle to produce much power because a) I'm not that fit, b) I'm 5' 3 and can usually make the very bottom boxing weight class!)
For this one, I had reset my HR zones based on the Free Spirits calculator (55-70, 70-80, 80-85, 85-95, 95-100% of HRR, + RHR), using MHR of 175 and RHR of 50 (the latter perhaps a bit low but it gives reasonable looking zones to me). Time in each zone as follows:
HR Zone, Time in zone Int 1 (%), Time in zone Int 2 (%)
UT2 (55-70%), 34%, 6%
UT1 (70-80%), 59%, 44%
AT (80-85%), 7%, 35%
TR (85-95%), 0%, 14%
AN 95-100%), 0%, 0%
So plenty of spare in interval 1, significantly tougher in interval 2 (although I did comfortably beat the int 1 distance). Max HR 156 for int 1, 162 for int 2. Think I may need new triceps for tomorrow.
So next it's CTC for the rower, and then the IRL 10k. Quite a high distance month on the challenges this one.

Re: Forum Flyers
Nicely done Paul. Always good to push through to a new PB.
I did the 10km last night - hadn't done one since December, so good to see a 7% increase in watts for a new 40+ PB for me (44:37.8). Interactive training programme working for me so far.
On Friday I used a 2x15' UT1 session to put in a CTC time. Should be able to go a bit faster later in the month once the boats start filling up properly.
Cheers
Dave

Re: Forum Flyers
went to do day 4 of the mud challenge only to be asked by my wife where i was going. to the gym i replied.. she said no you are not we are going out for dinner..... sigh
it was a very good dinner though only marred by the fact my wife had a memory loss incident while at the restaurant. couldnt remember peoples names while sitting next to them and having known them for over 20 years. so shes off to the doc today.

Re: Forum Flyers
apparently could be one of two things.
stress related memory loss... this is distinctly possible as my wife stresses about everything.
or Transient global amnesia. not sure about this as the effects appear to be different but i should probably have gone with her as she didnt really remember what had happened this one looks to be loss of immediate short term memory which she didnt appear to have. actually i should have walked her out of the restaurant and taken her to hospital but after a few minutes she appeared normal again. Hindsight is great

Best wishes Erik. I hope that it turns out to be something simple that just passes on.
CTC this morning.
15' 3741m 2:00.2
15' 3761m 1:59.6
I'd been thinking to start off slightly faster than my 30' SB and try to improve as the month went along, but this proved so tough that it may well be my only attempt. 3' isn't much of a rest. I'll just wait to see if some morning before March runs out I feel extraordinarily ornery and ready to kick the snot out of it.

Re: Forum Flyers
Thanks ... she had another one off incident about 18 months ago. A seizure. went through the whole hospital routine and they concluded it was a random event with no real reason as to why it happened. Apparently you are allowed one seizure in your life. When you have a second they start getting serious in finding out what's wrong.
Anyway... back on track with the mud challenge. Should get in 6 sessions this week

Continuous 30’ aside, lot of brass in that run if anyone is wondering. I can imagine adding “ornery.” Can you use rates in the high 20s for 3k+? Wish I could but no horses in wishes.Yankeerunner wrote:Best wishes Erik. I hope that it turns out to be something simple that just passes on.

Tonight: 10km, 49:31.8, 2:28.5, 23 average spm. First row for me over 30 min / 6182m. Have entered it in the IRL for now - don't know if I'll make another attempt this month - might do.
Ended up rowing it with conflicting objectives: primarily wanted to do some steady-moderate training (UT2/UT1); but also had a 50min / 2:30 pace target in mind; and also knew I could count it for the IRL (I only settled on a 10k rather than a 60 min at the last minute). So, met my 50min / 2:30 target, but a bit disappointing to see the ranking at only the 5th percentile.
HR crept up above the UT1 as I continued to control the projected finish time to 50:00, so that objective went a bit pear-shaped:
<=UT2: 4%, UT1: 19%, AT: 36%, TR: 41%, AN: <1%
Sweated a lot in the second half, hamstrings felt it a bit, but most of all the butt: forgot to sit on my towel...
Think I might find it easier to do base building on my bike - I find I just enjoy the ride and don't get caught up in trying to meet targets when doing that ... The aerobic side from that should be transferable to rowing.

Re: Forum Flyers
last nights effort.
30 min 7402m at 2:01.5 @25spm
preceeded by 10 mins on the bike and weights and a 10 min bike as a warm down after.
finding my split times slowly dropping and looking forward to the sub 2:00 splits appearing in my logbook.
heading into AT work on my weight loss plan which are a lot shorter but more intense.... yay not looking forward to those.
will also continue with some longer rows on my days off the plan or as needed to get the required distances for Mud Challenge.
also want to have a crack at a 60 min session as well. I was supposed to do one a couple weeks ago but it fell into a bad week and didnt get done.
grrr wrong thread lol
