It's easier to get the tarry gravel out when it's not sticking to the hairs. Shaving your legs, also, makes you go faster (although it doesn't have that effect on the erg).

Yeah, you guys shave for speed is what you say....I just think you like the way it looks with the cute sox!

More importantly, it makes you look like a wannabe drag queen. There's no good reason to shave one's legs, in my opinion, unless one makes a habit of eating asphalt, or has a handy soigneur at home. If you really want that miniscule drag reduction on the bike, wear Lycra tights. Sure, you'll still look like a big old ladyboy whilst out on the road, but at least you can reverse the effect instantly once you hit the gym, squash court, swimming pool or bedroom.

OK, I admit it does look quite good on the posing stakes if one has the legs and the speed to back it up... I haven't shaved my legs since 1988. =)

Surely from purely an aerodynamics point of view there is no reason to shave legs for cyclists. The hairs cause the airflow to be more turbulent, hence more energetic, and hence less likely to separate. The flow attaches better to the surface of the leg, reduces the thickness of the boundary layer and thus causing less drag. Most people think that hairy = more drag. Not true. For the same reason why golf balls have dimples. The healing thing is probably more likely a reason, but i think that it could be just posing!!

Swimmers have been proven to be more efficient when shaved, dont know the dynamics behind it, but the bodysuits that were designed to replicate shaving were banned by FINA

Ok after watching the Taff Attack forum for a few weeks and looking at the CTC site today, I've got to say I'm impressed. Both with the banter and with your abilities. I tried a 300m row this evening and hit 1:02.0 and almost burst my lungs, How Dwayne gets below 45 seconds is beyond me. The only good thing about times over 1 minute is that I still get the metres added to my logcard

What is the secret of a racing start? I haven't got it for sure

Anyway after buttering you all up for a paragraph or two I'd like to join the Taffs if I might. My times are all pretty poor ranging from 64% to 80% in the rankings, but I am persistent, I was at least on the same first page as Dwayne (but a million meteres behind) in the January virtual challenge with about 470K for Team Oz.

Also I'm a born and bred taff 18 years in Llandrindod Wells, before leaving. I'm now in Brisbane, Australia (and 26 years older) so you'll have a couple of us working your night shift.

Best regards
Brendin Lewis

Welcome to TA.

The racing start: If this is for the 300m CTC, then you should do one thing to the erg before you get started. Turn it so that the fan end is toward a wall (or something else solid). That way it won't bounce across the floor when you do this piece.

Ok...half, half, three-quarter, three-quarter, full. That's a typical racing start. And since this is only (yeah right, only) three hundred meters, you go b*lls out the whole way. How's that?

Dwayne
Here's a, "How could I have been this stupid?" moment:

Took a day off yesterday, psyched to do another 300M today. Warmed up, took the erg off the slides, weighed myself and was 164.2 ... a LW again. Bested my old time and got a PB. Then realized that I HAD LEFT THE DRAG AT 115!!!

Rats!!!

Now gotta get psyched to do another, sometime soon, at high drag.

Sorry folks!

Not feeling 100%, so it could all end in tears (it probably will either way
