I'll be worried, very worried, if I look out the window and see that on Valentine's Day (the snow, that is - maybe Janet will draw a heart in the sand for me)
Light breeze with some showers forecast and 27C for the Harbour City - perfect! Enjoy your day, Baz

33 Lunies now on the Honor Board!
Bicycle Colorado is hosting its annual conference today called Moving People Forward...and I'll be there. One of the things that our public transportation planners are working on quite diligently is what they call a first and last mile solution, with the theory being that if you can help people get to the bus or light rail station from their homes by bike, then they would use the public transportation systems and take vehicles off the roads. Suffice to say, icy streets and no bikeway to the regional transport center means that I will need to drive to the transportation center in order to get downtown by bus. Still using public transportation...just can't for the whole way! Hurray for park-n-rides.

45 Lunies!
An increase of 12 over yesterday for us!
Mega amounts of hearts!
Whew....just under the wire! Got my Valentine's Challenge completed! And judging from the uptick in numbers today, there were quite a few of us worldwide who were deadline driven! Over 6000 people have completed the Valentine's Challenge...that's good stuff!
Another episode...bunny trails of the mind
Every day I listen for the comment or look for the picture that's going to be a keeper for that day. Sometimes I rely on cartoons that capture my interest, and other times it's being at a conference - one where I did expect to get some energizing material. I'm an optimist - I see things and people in a positive light...not discounting that there is truly a dark side in the world, but choosing to focus on the positrons. Yesterday was no exception. These bike conferences aren't really all about bikes...they are about how people move around whether it's as pedestrians, on bikes or e-bikes, transit, or vehicles - we're just trying to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles. Downtown Denver has a SOV rate of 70 percent. That is huge in a city with a great transit system. Seattle, one of Denver's sister cities, has a SOV rate of 25 percent...dropped from 35 percent in 2016. That is mind-boggling.
"Going back to the past is our future." Dongho Chang, Chief Transportation Engineer, Seattle. This traffic engineer sees a lot of the city by bike, so much so that his twitter feed followers think it is a feed that must be written by multiple people. His mission is to have people move through the city safely...and Seattle has truly reduced pedestrian involved accidents and fatalities. I don't know about your city, but the Front Range cities here in Colorado sure can't claim that...in fact, these numbers have been increasing. Mr. Chang was clearly a favorite of the conference crowd yesterday, and he provided me with my keeper phrase of the day. You can read more about this inspirational guy with a different approach to getting work done in the attached link. As to going back to the past...he's not shrugging off technology, but he clearly seems to believe that being unplugged is not a bad thing for at least portions of your day.

I was just reading about the origins and history of Valentine's Day, and I read about it being celebrated (though not our version of it) on July 30 in some Eastern Orthodox circles. Hmmm, don't imagine you'll be converting any time soon.
And now for something completely different...
Hope they got the erg out first.

47 Lunies earned the cards!
While I am still shaking my head over the 21,418 m celebration of V-Day, I am delighted that so many Lunies play with numbers ! And cartoons or comics! Makes everybody smile. Thank you!!

Throwback Thursday .... and it's the Olympic podium ...
Today is the 10th anniversary of what I think is the FIRST team stats report I ever did, and since it is short, I will post it below.
Kona2 wrote:Wow! Way to row Luna-Tics!
The team logged in 181,419 m yesterday!
Milestones:
Barbara G. crossed the 500K mark in "grand" style!
Noelle B. - personal best - longest continuous row (16,300 m)!
Top 3:
Rodrigo G. 39,672 (whew!)
Noelle B. 16,300
Chris T. 15,096
You've all really moved our boat forward! We're currently 134,786 m from taking 13th place overall. More importantly, we have several teammates who are within reach of personal goals and major milestones! Row strong!
When Concept2 opened up the Forum "doors" a little over 10 years ago (gasp), the Lunies were right there, ready to participate. We weren't really sure how we wanted to use the forum as a communication device. Capturing the numbers was a lot harder to do then than it is now (thank you very very much AJ and danwho). For a short while, we used the Olympic podium model and highlighted the top three meter generating rowers of the previous day. Since ALL meters are worthy meters, got rid of that podium model pretty quickly.
Quite frequently, bg and Minnie (aka Chris T) appeared in this podium listing...and would be queen of the boat. When I was looking for a graphic for Californian Chris, I found Minnie Mouse in queenly attire. It wasn't long before Chris became Minnie, then Minnie the Mooner as she would consistently row at least a half marathon 200 days out of the year, and now Minnie the hula-er. bg has run many marathons and ultras since we began - and some of her first postings were about things like running 20 miles the next day, and she was so sorry she couldn't add rowing meters! We started giving her the tennis shoe graphic on marathon days.
And that's your throwback Thursday - it's amazing to me that I would pick today to look back to the first stats...and it would just happen to be the tenth anniversary. There are no coincidences....hahahaha and holy cow and WOOHOO!

I've had bike wheels that looked like this...
Happy Lunar New Year! It's the Year of the Dog (aren't they all???)
Lantern festival is held near conclusion of the Lunar New Year celebrations. Paper lanterns often are decorated with lantern riddles. One that seems appropriate:
It's been around for millions of years, but it's no more than a month old..... you know this answer.

Truly amazing...and congratulations to all the Luna-tics on the achievement. I started rowing and joined the group around 2009 to help recover from surgery on my hamstring and whilst coming and going with other activities over the years, it is great to be part of this community, albeit from afar Downunder! Everyone is an inspiration in their own unique way, and that is what makes it great.
And must say, it has been hiking weather these past few days, so I've been Out and About in the bush...(lots of snakes Out and About as well )
And a special call-out to Kona - you are truly amazing, producing stats and stories each day!! Cheers, Baz

Get ready to clear yer calendar...again...you're going to be busy.busy.busy.
Formerly known as March Madness until perhaps the NCAA swatted at Concept2 (seriously...it was a blocking foul), this March Mudness Challenge celebrates Vermont's muddy Spring season. It's like those days when you're out for a walk with the pups and you have to leave your shoes or boots at the door because the pups have dragged you OFF trail and into the muck that just a day ago was snow-covered beauty hiding serious muck (you HOPE it's mud). You can change the name of the Challenge, but its lure is not diminished. The Lure...well, that's the potential for FREE stuff. They had you at FREE. So free up some additional time on your exercise calendar - you won't be able to resist this Challenge.
And there will be shamrocks awarded for the 5K days, and the pots of gold for 10K.
The Details
Choose from two levels of participation:
The Basic Challenge: Row, ski or ride 5000 meters each day for 25 days or more in March.
The Advanced Challenge: Row, ski or ride 10,000 meters each day for 25 days or more in March.
Note: BikeErg meters are counted as half when applied to the challenge.
This is an individual challenge. You do not need to belong to a team to participate.
Meters must be entered online in your online logbook.
Indoor rower, SkiErg and BikeErg meters only (no on water/on snow meters please). You can combine meters from each machine to reach the daily total of 5000 or 10,000 meters.
Incentives and Rewards At least one Lunie has won a prize every season....I think (sometimes we have TWO winners)
Participants who meet the challenge can enjoy:
Prize drawings are held every day from all the people who have done at least 5000 meters (2500 meters for kids and adaptive athletes) that day and entered it in their online logbook. The more days you complete, the more you increase your chances of winning!
On randomly selected days during March, we will draw for an additional prize from those who complete at least 10,000 meters (2500 meters for kids and adaptive athletes).
Prizes vary from day to day, but will include Concept2 clothing, heart rate monitors and some surprises!
Drawings are held at (or soon after) noon each weekday for the previous day, so be sure to enter your meters promptly! We will post names of winners on the web site.
Hall of Fame—All those who are on-track for at least 5000 meters for at least 25 days during the month of March will be listed in the Mud Season Madness Progress Board and will be able to download a specially designed certificate.
For kids and adaptive athletes, the incentives and rewards go into effect at 2500 meters.
Then, as if that wasn't enough spring fever and madness, Concept2 opens the World Erg Challenge from March 15 - April 15, which is a team based challenge, and all those meters you are sweating to produce start filling the team meter piggy banks in this galactic challenge. Oh, the gauntlet will be thrown down all right...see you in orbit, spacers!
