I will be watching it from a World Heritage Area - Mungo National Park. In fact, the area is a remarkable lunar looking landscape and it is World Heritage listed as they have found aboriginal existance dating back some 50,000 years. I won't "rabbit" on about it here, but I will be updating https://thelandy.com for those with an interest.

These days we also post a lot of photos on our Facebook page (Xplore - Out & About) and I've included a link if any of the team would like to see some photo's of our fantastic coastline and dramatic outback landscapes. https://www.facebook.com/TouringtheOutback

Oh do rabbit about it! I envy you the World Heritage Area viewing station. Stunning photos as always!

Hey Steve, well enjoy the Stellar. I see plenty out on the water in Australia and they make quite a range of paddle craft. But crikey, thanks goodness we don't have the problem of waiting for the ice to melt before going for a paddle. We are heading for around 35C today so will be out on the water later today... If you get a chance would like to see a photo of the surf ski. Cheers, Baz B)

Go to Southern Paddlesports Facebook page. Owner, Pat Dour, just posted a pic of me picking up the boat. Scroll down and there's a couple of better ones showing the paint scheme. Should be fun :D !

New to the Crew

Post by Berckes » January 24th, 2018, 11:22 am

Greeting LUNA-tics,
I'm new to the crew and wanted to say hi and ask some questions. A couple things about me: I'm a mid-30s guy who has been running over the past 7+ years for general fitness goals. I have run 32 half marathons in 23 US states. My goal is to cover that distance in all 50 US states eventually. I'm slow as I'm a big guy, always struggled with weight (I played football through high school and into college until I suffered a back injury). I tried the rower in my gym awhile back and finally pulled the trigger to get one of my own. I joined this team after reading the message boards. I'm excited to make this activity my main cardio cross training while still running and lifting weights. I'm still working on improving my form and while I'm still slow, I believe I'm getting better.
Now for the questions:
1. I get the love of palindromes in general but is there something specific about them that I should know about?
2. How are people designated as having a moon in their rowing total? Is it a certain threshold you need to exceed? Is it anything over a half marathon?
3. How do you earn the boat / canoe icons?
~~~
4. More workout specific - I had been using the "biathalon" feature and programming it to have 1000m repeats with open ended breaks (which would be 30-60 seconds for me). This morning I just hit the 5000m option and took a quick break when I needed it. I'm still just trying to get things figured out but I would appreciate suggestions for what kind of workouts to try. I'd like workouts to be in the 30-60 minute range. Anything that will help with losing weight and/or gaining cardio endurance is welcome.
Thanks for your help!
~JB
Welcome, Jeff, nice to have you on board. Good questions, all. Our fearless moderator probably has a cut-n-paste primer of items 1 thru 3 ... most of them being just plain motivational fun, which helps keep one engaged. And, there are certainly those among us who can speak to your specific workout questions. My two-cent's worth on losing weight is that if I average a certain number of meters each day, I'll maintain my current weight. And, if I watch an extra episode of something, while exercising, I'll lose weight. (Obviously, many things factor into that number, but my maintenance workout is 10K.)
Some answers for Jeff B
Post by Kona2 » January 24th, 2018, 3:48 pm
Image Image
I do have a cut n paste for some of the answers....just not on this computer. I'm in travel mode at the moment, but happily heading back to Colorado later today. So I will give some quick answers, but post the more detailed stuff later.
Palindromes...Tony started it all with his own personal life of pi. As number collector, I was surprised and educated here and there with things like teammates posting a number that was a Fibonacci number...or a palindrome. It's just for fun, although I consider it a dismal numbers day if there isn't at least ONE palindrome in the bunch.
How do we canoe? Somewhere in the beginning of the Challenge, I probably posted a reminder...but it's been busy, so maybe not. A teammate earns a canoe by achieving 100K in the Challenge. More importantly, a paddle is earned at 200K...and for those into whopper meter territory...you can become a member of the bathtub brigade. Ed's already earned his bathtub (again), and we have SEVERAL other teammates poised to get their own. Our resident artist, AJ, works up a caricature for the canoe "natives" if we ask nice and if the picture that's posted or sent to us is of sufficient quality to see the details. Some of our new thumbnail sized photos are making it really tough.
A half moon, or a full moon came about many years ago when we had teammates who would row (at that time that was the only choice) a half marathon or a full marathon. Another teammate suggested that the recognition of this event be a half moon or a full moon symbol. And so we do this. We refer to them as moons because sometimes teammates don't do all the meters in one session - so they don't qualify as a half marathon,etc. Still, these are significant meters and should be recognized as special. I don't try to figure out whether it's a half-marathon or a full one....I just celebrate the totals.
More later on the above. Good questions - and there is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS someone else who doesn't know these answers. There might even be a decoder ring. And sometimes I make up answers just for fun. Hahahaha.
All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 1.24.18
Post by Kona2 » January 25th, 2018, 1:29 pm
Image Day 25 of 31.....we've got 7 days of opportunity remaining!!!!
Home again, home again...jiggity jig....the rowing machine awaits and I am DELIGHTED. The Lunies are still in spot 15, and some of us are without canoes or paddles...I think I should at least be able to get a canoe. In my mental calculations, I had banked on getting meters in while in Tucson and it just didn't happen that way. You've been there.
Welcome to the team Jeff! You made a good decision with this group. We are not about numbers here, friends helping friends. You asked some good questions. When younger use to participate in tri-athlons. Participate and finish - never the fastest but never last haha. My knees told me to stop - I then found the rower and love it. You are on the right path for exercising for you. That really is the answer - what works for you. I have done the 1000, 2000, 5,000 at the beginning. Now I am in Qatar and have a lot of time with not much here to do so I have gone for the longer meters watching movies or just loud music. Adjusting the resistance helps as well. For me it is about competition of myself can I row 10,000 meters faster than I did the day before or pace myself to complete 30-40,000 meters and beat the time. Some days I do, some I don’t. Then there are days it feels like you just started.
Good luck on your goals! Again you joined the right team we are behind you 100% to help you reach them. Kona is the best! AJ does great art work. I work hard to get his artwork on the page. Just another incentive to help along the way.
Set your pace don’t over do it and you will enjoy the ride!
All my best,
Ed
Thanks for your help!
Thanks everyone! Bg - I'll never pass up an opportunity to talk 50 state half marathons. Here's my personal list of completed states / races. Would love recommendations of good races in states I haven't completed. I see you're from MD - I enjoyed my race there. In order of when I finished:
1. Iowa - Des Moines Half Marathon; 2. Louisiana - Rock'n'Roll Mardi Gras (NOLA); 3. Wisconsin - Madison Mini Marathon; 4. Nebraska - Omaha Half; 5. Illinois - Abraham Lincoln Presidential Half Marathon (Springfield); 6. Minnesota - Minneapolis Half Marathon (Team Ortho); 7. Utah - Park City Half; 8. Missouri - Mo' Cowbell (St. Charles); 9. Virginia - Charlottesville Half; 10. Oregon - Bald Peak Half; 11. Maryland - Frederick Half; 12. Tennessee - Oak Barrel Half (Lynchburg); 13. Montana - Missoula half; 14. South Dakota - Sioux Falls Half; 15. Oklahoma - Route 66 Half (Tulsa); 16. New York - Buffalo Half; 17. West Virginia - Decker's Creek Trail half (Morgantown); 18. Alaska - Skinny Raven Half (Anchorage); 19. Washington - Tacoma Narrows; 20. Kentucky - Urban Bourbon (Louisville); 21. Florida - Gasparilla (Tampa); 22. California - Avenue of the Giants (Humboldt); 23. Rhode Island - Narragansett Bay Half (East Providence)
Favorite Race and best medal is the Gasparilla Race in Tampa. Incredibly well done. Des Moines is my home race and I've run it 8 years in a row. The Abraham Lincoln race is great - finisher medal is an oversized penny (although, technically they use the Lincoln $5 bill image). Bald Peak is the most difficult I've done but also the most beautiful. Most of the races I enjoyed. I didn't enjoy Route 66 or the Tacoma Narrows race (this was the one in August, not the bigger spring race). My next race is planned for June in Vermont. I'm hoping to shave some lbs before then!
