I had a quick look at my old logbooks and see that my first times were quite similar to yours (first 2km time was 9:35 followed by a 9:25 a month later, and a first 30 min just over 6km). This was back in 2004, and I stuck with regular training until my first kid arrived in 2009. My 2km PB of 7:19.9 was set just before then. I've managed to start a proper comeback in August, and pushing around 30% lower watts than my 2008 peak, so looking forward to the challenge of getting back to where I was and pushing through.
We're the same age, so keen to follow your progress, and see if I can stay ahead of you as you start making the big early gains! The key is get into a routine, monitor your progress, and fight any desires to take unscheduled rest days. Also, there are some talented and knowledgeable individuals in this team and elsewhere on the forum, so don't hesitate to ask any questions as they come up.
Cheers
Dave
Re: Forum Flyers
Dave,
Thanks for the kind words of encouragement. I really appreciate them.
I am also 12 weeks post-op from a very bad meniscus surgery. I had two tears on one knee, several bone spurs scraped, and a ton of debris removed. Wrapping up with PT now but wearing splints to get better knee extension almost every waking moment.
I hope as I lose weight and recover from my surgery I will be able to improve my technique and hopefully improve my times.
The forum and the various challenges certainly seem to help with keeping the motivation high.

Re: Forum Flyers
Welcome Stephen!
I joined the Flyers in January of this year when I purchased the Model E! Right from the start these folks were very helpful, knowledgeable and supportive. Great team to be a part of.
I'm fairly new to rowing which is to say I've been doing it for a year consistently so I'm in a similar boat of struggling with weight loss. Some of the folks on here suggested the Beginner Pete Plan so I tried and failed in the early part of 2017 but started over in July and just completed it this week! It's probably not for everyone but I liked it because I could still get it done with my work schedule and made me stick to a schedule.
I'd offer my advice but these guys/gals are far wiser than I so I typically stay in the background and hope to score some points for the CTC
Here's to us getting healthy on the erg!

That sounds serious, and I assume you've discussed rowing with your physio as part of your recovery. It should be OK given that it doesn't have the same impact as running, but I would assume that over-compressing at the catch (taking your shins past the vertical just before you take the next stroke) might put too much strain on the knees.
At some stage it's worth videoing yourself rowing from side-on to see how things look, and comparing to ideal versions online (don't have any links at hand at the moment, but forum searches should turn some up). I thought in my head that I was doing the right thing until I had a look at my video footage! A bit like my golf swing which felt perfect in my head until the instructor showed me all the flaws!

Re: Forum Flyers
Hi Forum Flyers.
Thank you Lindsay for the introduction to this team.
A bit about me...I was an avid runner for 10 years. I took up running after the birth of my second (of three) child. Never marathons but regular 10k races and teaching learn to run programs. During an MRI and x-rays to diagnose a torn meniscus, I was told to stop running due to severe osteoarthritis. I should have listened...but I kept running and earned myself a couple of artificial knees 3 years ago. I was told my running days were over and I should find another outlet...I tried swimming, cycling, stepping, etc. but could not find the same "rush" I got from running. Until I was introduced to the rowing machine. I bought the Model D with the PM3 and started my journey back to fitness. Two years ago I had a fall and shattered my upper humerus which resulted in a shiny plate and a number of screws in my arm...and a second surgery 6 months ago to do a bone graft as the bone did not fuse after the first surgery.
Fast forward to today...I have been cleared to start back on the rowing machine so dusted it off yesterday and started on the Weight Loss program outlined on the Concept2 website. I have been walking 5k a day (averaging 4 -5 days per week) and am healthy overall.
My goals include building my upper body strength and losing 60 pounds (40 pounds I gained very quickly after the end of my running habit - but not my love of food) and the other 20 pounds gained after surgeries.
Looking forward to getting to know all of you. Hoping this team will keep me focused and accountable!
Happy New Year!

Re: Forum Flyers
Hi Lisa and welcome to the team it is nice to have you aboard - where are you based in the world?
We post here but you will also see regulars in the other threads here as well. There is a FB page that hasn't captured the interest on many!
Sounds like you have had some serious challenges. I am sure that the rower will be an excellent part of your recovery and hopefully being part of a team will help as well. The virtual team challenge on the C2 site is entered through your Logbook - it starts on Monday, lasts a month and you just have to log your meters once affiliated with the Forum Flyers 2018 team - is that right Henry? (or is it already done?) The more meters the better and pace is of no real significance.
The CTC challenge is a separate monthly challenge and you just have to sign up and then log your entry each month - they provide a lot of variety and there are people from beginners to the fastest in the world. Each boat that is floated must have a female member which is one of the reason every entry counts - particularly for our team which has struggled in recent times with female members. (so double welcome!) http://www.c2ctc.com and you have to go in twice to get your entry right.
Best of luck with your goals - there are some very inspiring stories elsewhere here as well

Welcome Lisa, take care off yourself . The c2 is very versatile, and suits lots of people. Feel free to ask if you have questions. In the end is about keeping doing it that will help you/us.
Lindsay, just made the 2018 change. We we have a storm and lots of rain during the yearchange. And around record soft temps.
Wish all flyers a fine and healthy new (rowing)year

Re: Forum Flyers
71 Beetle, when you settle in and get your erg legs, please do check out the C2 Cross-Team Challenge. Bit sprinty and power-based but no boat shoves off the float without a lady in the bow seat. May or may not be to your liking but if it is, FF needs your help. Know you are interested in a virtual challenge team of beginning rowers from previous post. As you must know from your running experience and conversion to erging, beginning is largely adapting in a way that allows us to continue with old struggles. Begin again with FF!
For those who have signed up for an online logbook, joining individual Concept 2 challenges is automatic (ex.: Mud Season, Dog Days, Skeleton Crew). The Fall Team Challenge, Virtual Team Challenge, and World Erg Challenge require a team affiliation AND clicking button labelled "Join team Challenge" in the current challenge description block on the Teams Page. This procedure must be repeated in succeeding years.

Welcome on board Lisa. And well done to Lindsay who seems to have a way of getting in first with some smooth marketing when someone puts their hand up looking for a team!

Thanks Dave and Lisa - just have to keep the antennae out then the FFlyers sell themselves. It would be great if there were more out there not "seduced" by the FB thing. There are three boats of blokes looking for a lady to float them. Well done Catherine, Carol and Lana for being there for us. Spread the word!!Slothful1 wrote:Welcome on board Lisa. 2nd effort this month. Gunning for Rick Bayko's 2:02.5 and a seat in a fully (wo)manned boat. Blew up in the second minute of the 6th interval and barely finished.
