30 minutes at 20 spm

Metres..................7571
Average pace..........1:58.8
DF........................120

One of the biggest problems of being so bloomin' old is the amount of time it takes to recover from a hard workout so I haven't been able to do much since last Wednesdays improvement to my 30 minute British record as I've just felt too tired!

I found some energy creeping back in today though so happy with this 30 minutes capped at 20 spm. Only 6 days to the British Championships now so nothing too hard this week. :?
67 year old, 72 kilo (159lbs), 5'8''/174cm (always the shortest on the podium!) male. Based just south of London.
Best rows as an over 60. One Hour.....16011 metres. 30 mins.....8215 metres. 100k 7hrs 14 mins.

2/12 Dec CTC. Its going to be a busy month so though I'd best get on with the comps early. Set the rests conventionally just matching the rowing times. Set myself a target pace of 1:39.9 in the 1min; 1:42.5 in the 2min; 1:44.9 in the 3 min. Managed most of them but was suffering in the second 2 minuter and didn't quite hang on. Shame I didn't find another 0.6 secs from somewhere for the extra 2 meters! Otherwise happy enough with that.
Nice improvement on the 2k's Mike and a stormin' CTC well done me ol' mate I'll chase hard but it's a bit short for me, much more in your territory!

Thanks Susan and yes of course it is 9 mins of rest. Row Pro doesn't let you have a rep without a rest (min 20 secs I think) so I generally just stick a 1 min rest after the last rep - which is included in the total "rest" but is actually taken after the event. Obviously I take much longer at that stage!! My rests in the piece were 1,2,3,1,2 matching the active times.

That was an awful lot of sprints from you on Wednesday - I couldn't do that many on such short rests....Well done.

Yes, thanks Rod - its nice to still be chipping away at the times, but like you say its harder to recover these days so I have to try not to do hard sessions more than twice a week. I'm not good at that and tend to overdo the easy days a bit despite the very sub-optimal results.... Great going on your 30@20 - anything under 2 min pace over that time is a proper result.

Rod - well done on your 30 mins spm 20

Mike - excellent C2CTC

Me - whacked 2921m on the C2CTC which is only 8m short of what I did for this challenge in 2014. Very happy with that. Currently in boat 1, but not for long.

Susan, well done on getting so close to your 2014 time so early in the month - any chance you might better it later? :D

Me - I seem to have only been training fitfully since Cardiff, but have accumulated 75k towards the holiday challenge so perhaps not so idle. Also rowing on water, however that is never as sustained as working out on the erg. Was fast enough on Wednesday to push you out of boat 1 in the C2CTC, but in my case well down on what I did in 2014: 3112m, 1:55.6 pace now, against 3198m, 1:52.6 pace then. Thursday did 5k in 20:57.3 for the IRL Challenge, so faster than my Devon IRC time in September. This was in the pm after a 1800m swim before lunch so happy to achieve a SB.

Good so see that Rod is firing on all cylinders jn the 30R20 and MPx going well in the CTC. :D

Today I'm travelling up to London, so I suppose that will have to do as a taper before BRIC. Unfortunately I'm the only one jn my category at both 2k and 500m, so will be just racing the clock. Nevertheless looking forward to seeing most of you at BRIC tomorrow.

Loads of bling won by Sub-7s ... I posted a 2 sec worse time than I did in the Welsh IRC fourth place so no bling for me this time... always next year. BTW 5 of by opposition didn't turn up including a likely winner Alastair Peake.

As usual the scheduling meant anyone rowing missed the races before and after. So I saw Warren pull a pretty good time but like me slightly slower than Cardiff... Saw the start of LGF's race but annoying missed the end because of mustering...
Well done LGF with the gold... on to the Crash-bs or Worlds?

TPK got a silver unfortunately didn't see you apart from at the weigh in... a gold for Clare Rainbow a fellow Sub-7 too.

Marjorie great to see you again...

The Sub-7 LWT power couple also achieved in their races... so I'm post better updates...

With no James In MLWT 55-59 meant it was a relative easy win for Pentti Soini only just faster than my PB of 2 weeks agol and way slower than James.... oh well next year...

Marjorie - great work at BRIC and certainly clocking up the metres. Brilliant 5k result too. I dont see much chance of redoing the C2CTC - think I will leave that be.

Toby - congratulations on 4th. A massive achievement.

Richard - stunning gold medal.

Rod and Carol - I am sure you will be online soon.

Yep - the Finns were out in force, (quite delighted I have a personal invite to their indoor rowing outdoor half marathon this year - date April xxx location somewhere round Helskini weather brr! :D ). Not sure I will be taking them up on it as surely once every 2 years is enough suffering.

Me - it wasnt going to be my weekend. Arrived in London on Friday, (just as well as it was snow dire in Brum). On Saturday didnt leave as early for the event as intended as got the plug stuck in the basin and could get it out. Also made that beginners mistake of thinking the Velodrome is behind the Olympic stadium, (oops it isnt - dont laugh too loudly as I know I wasnt the only one to cock this up, a whole group of us were jogging round the neighbourhood and soon discovered that most people dont have a clue where the velodrome is and its not on the maps  ). Got to the weighin at 08:40 so only had one chance, (800g under in kit - dont quite believe that but shame as I could have had a small breakfast). :? Most annoying we only had 5 minutes to warmup, (even worse we didnt know that until we were called to race so I hadnt gone faster than 2:40 pace). Tried to hit it fast off the start - some 1:56s started appearing which scared me to slow down after 150m. With late food, ie nearly 9am, and feeling lacklustre I didnt really hit the big time - a very sorry 8:19.9 which is 1.3 secs slower than Belgium, and 0.6 secs slower than Cardiff. Enough for silver but not really pressured as Claire Rainbow caned a sub-8 mins. Came away wondering where Joanne Allsebrook was too - really I only deserved a bronze.

Just for a laugh, (and in my case I know I cannot win), got involved in x-training challenge. Being a last minute signup and too close to eating was never going to be that great. 200m row, 15 squats, 10 burpees and repeat in 4 mins. Nearly got two repeats done - way behind everyone else.

Sorry I am not very social - I like doing my own thing.

PS. My boss was concerned that indoor rowing could result in injury - I tried to persuade him that while that is possible in my case there are more risks in crossing the road, (particularly in foreign countries). :o I might add to that I nearly cut my hand trying to remove the BRIC wristband with nail scissors, (really tough stuff that was)

I got to the West End for "An American in Paris" and had some celebratory gelato and coffee.

Nightmare journey home - standing from London, but at least the trains were running some of the time. Dragging the suitcase through the snow for 1.5 miles, (no buses), wasnt easy and certainly gave my arms a workout. :P

PPS Chickened personal training today thanks to the snow so will do that 20 Dec instead.

Hi Guys and Gals, thanks for the congrats and yes it is neat to be a 5 x British Indoor Rowing Champ :D :D

Bojam - Sorry I didnt realise you were there otherwise I would have come and found you as I like to have faces to names for forumites. No, I'm not going to the World's or Crash B's this year. Mainly as I'd be the oldest in the race as I turn 60 in March, so saving myself for next season  .

Rod- Well done mate, don't beat yourself up too much, the Velodrome is a hard track to pb and as I well know, trying to put down what you do in the garage/gym is far easier than putting your A game down at a set time and date. Great set of splits through the middle matching the winner so you're not too far away. If it's any help, one 'tip' Eddie Fletcher gave me was that as 'we' get older so power starts to wain quicker whilst endurance stays around a bit longer, so use what power you have at the start of the race. It's one of the reasons I now go hard and fast for the 1st 500 now and generally hang on for the rest  (Not this year though  , see my 'blog' in the 'training for BRIC 2017' thread if you're really interested  )

Sorry I missed you TPK and Amazing Amazon, perhaps next year. By the way AA, British Rowing retweeted a great picture of you on twitter.

All the best for Xmas and the New Year All :D

Had great fun spectating at BRIC on Sat. Tho twas a bit of an early start to catch the masters!

Really felt for LGF, and others in the heat when their session was hit by the gremlins and everyone was forced to wait around for about 15mins instead of getting on with the race. Didn't realise the reset had messed up your monitor Richard until I read your blog. I had wondered why you didn't seem to be targeting sub 6:30 in your pacing when you clearly normally do. Great win nonetheless.

Enjoyed seeing Graham Benton get another sub 6 - and many congrats to Warren for coming an excellent 5th in that race.

Also was really good to see some of the GBR team on the ergs - like it used to be in BIRC days - and great to see the big guys going sub 6.

Congrats to all who raced, you put on a great show. I managed to pick out Carol, Marjorie, Susan, Rod, Toby, and Os in your races, but no doubt missed some others I should have noted.

Spoke briefly to Rod and Carol about their slight frustration with times - which really shouldn't be overstated as a Gold and Silver are excellent results and while a couple of seconds over expectations is disappointing, it wouldn't surprise me if it was just a natural result of having to do an erg test in the early morning when it was freezing cold!

My training has had a few interruptions this week but some stuff has been done:

3/12 10K supposed to be a cruise around 2:00 pace. Managed 39:39.2 (not 3!) at 1:59.0 but was harder than a cruise!
4/12 Very tired. Got in the gym and did 2 of my 3 circuits of Dumbbells but then gave up...
5/12 After my day of rest (I wish!) I tried a 2k but gave up near the beginning and just paddled for 20 mins or so.
6/12 Tried the same again with the same result!
7/12 5K TT for IRL. Last time dipped under 19 mins so decided to try 1:52.5 for an 18:45. Managed 1:52.1 for an 18:40.8 SB so well pleased with that.
8/9/10 away in London
11/12 Dumbbells and 30 mins varipace for 7557. Supposed to be a cruise but found it very hard!
12/12 It should have been another 2k test but I'm fed up of failing those so went for a 500 TT instead. Last time managed 1:30.0 so was keen to dip under. Comfortable at 1:26 and 1:27 pace through 250 then started to slow and died on my a**e in the last 100 but just hung in enough for a 1:29.8 - phew!

Thought I'd try and get in the habit of getting back on the forum more regular. Started writing my own 'blog' again so just cut n pasted it here for anyone interested.

Did mean to row yesterday but had a funny ‘pain’ whilst showering prior to ENT. Left side above the hip, in retrospect felt like a muscle spasm. Made me feel a bit nauseas although I wasn’t sick. Did’nt really clear until I got back from ENT 3 hrs later.

Been spending time looking at doing something different training wise and came across the ‘Jensen’s Power Profile’. Thought I’d do one for myself and see if it tells me anything. So to-day did a 20’ competition warm up followed by 3 x 10s R3. A little surprised as I always felt it was ‘power’ that was letting me down but looking at the figures, my results to-day should be more than enough for a BR.

Heart rate for the warm up was high on each of the 3 peaks. Been thinking my body has been fighting something for a while now. Weighed myself as well this morning 124.1kgs

20’ – 1:54.7 – 20 – 5230 – 232 – HR 135/142/147

3 x 10s R3
1 – 699w
2 – 1:19 (changed to time/500, wish I hadn’t as didn’t get the ‘watts’)
3 – 721w = 6:19.0 2k (from the Jensen Profile)

My latest rowing challenge is to row as many of the world's highest mountains in metres on the Concept2 erg if you are interested join me on FaceBook or the Concept2 Forum posting.php?mode=post&f=45.

The lists I'm using for info and refernce are on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_m ... _elevation, the 8000s and 7000s are complete but 6000s and below are probably not.

I'm starting with Shishapangma (or Gosainthān) at 8027m it is the fourteenth highest mountain and the only one wholly in Tibet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shishapangma

Any takers?

30 minutes capped at 20 spm

7626 metres
1:58.0 av. pace

This is a new Lightweight PB by 0.5 and only another 0.6 to go and I'll have beaten my old heavyweight PB!

Looks like I'm recovered from the 2k at last Saturdays British Championships but it's taken a few days!

Mike.......great to see you on Saturday....and well done on the 500, Sub 1:30 is well out of my league and a nice 5k too but I'll be giving chase on that one!

Richard.............good to see you too and big congrats on the Gold!
67 year old, 72 kilo (159lbs), 5'8''/174cm (always the shortest on the podium!) male. Based just south of London.
Best rows as an over 60. One Hour.....16011 metres. 30 mins.....8215 metres. 100k 7hrs 14 mins.

Not for me Bojam, I've enough ad hoc stuff with the Sub 7 ITC, IRL and CTC to fit into my training programme without 'climbing' all over the world

Good to see you Rod (and Carol) even though it was far too fleetingly.

To-days efforts

Meant to warm up with my normal competition warm up but was pulling strong so made it a technical 20’ fletcher on 230w start, concentrating on stiff core square shoulders, felt good when I strung a few together.

Dialled in 3 x 1’ R4 for todays’ Jensen Power Profile Test although not sure how many I would actually do. As it happened one was enough  . Came out for the second but knew after 4-5 strokes I wasn’t going to beat the 1st interval so slowed and warmed down.

Whereas yesterday’s result suggested I had more than enough anaerobic capacity/power for a BR, to-day’s suggest’s I’m lacking aerobic capacity as the 1’ ratio only gives me a 6:24.0 2k :|

20’ – 1:51.3 – 20 – 5387 – 253 – HR 140/146/146

1’ – 1:23.3 – 40 – 360 – 605 – HR 157 = 6:24.0 2k (from the Jensen Profile)

Half Marathon (21097m)

Time.................1:24.05.2
Average pace.......1:59.5
SPM..................34
DF.....................110

Happy enough but it shows that I've lost a lot of endurance during this recent period of 2k training and racing as I was much faster back in October when I last did one.

I hope to speed it up over the next few weeks though.

No arse problems....so confident I can push the pace on without feeling like I'm being stabbed in the you know what!
