Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
So close to hitting 8k in 30min, but came in with 7942m, which was a 130m improvement on previous 30min PB.
What's most surprising is that that time is 86th percentile and my other PBs are 81st/82nd - the 30min didn't feel that much tougher.

Thanks Stu. I'm not sure about HMs but maybe I'll try one in the future. More concentrated on distances that we row in the club right now like 5k 30:00 and 2k as these are more like distances that we row OTW.Dangerscouse wrote:Great going Scott. Now that you believe in yourself the illusion of boundaries are melting away. Great to see that this was done away from the club too.
It won't be much longer and you'll be doing HMs at that pace. It's a tough one but it's a different kind of tough compared to the lower distances, and it's a good long term target for you to aim for

Well done DNA. Piece by piece you'll keep building it up to over 8k. Great improvement on the last PB

Tremendous work Shawn. Been checking your Instagram posts...lots of great information you've been sharing. Been doing a predominantly carnivore diet myself since April and have been hitting lifting and rowing sprint PRs as well!Shawn Baker wrote:Another 250m PR this time 34.8 sec (1:09.6 @47spm)- continuing to get steadily faster as I approach 12 months on an all meat diet- 50 years old was good and I expect 51 to be even better!

The percentiles are sometimes a little odd. Unless it has changed recently, the 90th* percentile for 6000m has a faster average split than the 90th percentile for 5000m, and the 500m and 100m are much faster than Paul's law would predict based on the 2000m and above. My guess would be that some distances are more popular than others For example there are fewer people doing the 6000m, and those that do tend to be more serious rowers; whereas the popularity of Crossfit leads to a lot of fairly strong people rowing fast 500m but not necessarily having the aerobic fitness to row similarly fast 2000+m.
Given my own experiences with the 30 minutes, my guess would be most typical fitness ergers find rowing it fast a much less pleasant experience than rowing 5000m fast, so tend to post worse times. That and the fact that pacing becomes more important for the distance.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
The other funny/nice thing with percentiles is (rather obvious, but) if a few people come along and post worse times than you then your percentile improves. My 10k changed from 81st to 82nd percentile. All without me having to lift a finger. Feels good man!JerekKruger wrote:Nice work!DNA_Rower wrote:So close to hitting 8k in 30min, but came in with 7942m, which was a 130m improvement on previous 30min PB.

@ Scott - great work! You're progressing very fast! You've done all the legwork/hard work, so you should be proud of yourself. Just glad that you're taking the time to share both your work and your progress with all of us. Not enough young people take advantage of this forum. You seem like an old soul!
@ Stu - that's an amazing time! Very strong. You're 2 seconds off 500m pace of my 2K! Top 10 too! Well deserved!
@ Shawn - even though I'm nearly Vegan now, that's some amazing stuff. I'll eat more grass to make up for all that meat for you!
@ DNA - great work! 130m improvement for that row is a huge jump! I wish you could've gotten the 8K but that's coming soon.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Thanks Mike. I'm well chuffed that I'm currently, and I don't expect this to last, above Paul Buchanan. He's one of the ergers that I hold in ultimate esteem.
@ Tom I have never done a 6k either for practice or a test. Not sure why it has just never entered my head as an option. I'll have a go at that sometime soon. 5k TT might be done in a week or so as it's part of this month's Team Oarsome Challenge, and I can incorporate as a high intensity day. I agree with comments too. 30 mins is a lot longer than you think it will be when you giving it some.

I'm not entirely sure why 6k is a ranked piece, being so close to 5k. I think it has to do with them being a common test for club rowers (not sure why) and I think this is exactly why the splits are faster than for 5ks.Dangerscouse wrote:@ Tom I have never done a 6k either for practice or a test. Yeah, there's something for me that makes 30 minutes a lot harder than a 5k or 6k. Not sure what.

Yeah I'd like to think that I am older mentally than I actually am. Feel so young on this forum! It's great to see such fast progression these past two weeks. I am almost certain my next 2k after Christmas will be sub 7:10. Going for a 10k PB next Friday so that could be interesting as I have never raced that distance, going for sub 1:59!mdpfirrman wrote:@ Scott - great work! You're progressing very fast! Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
@Scott for the 10k my advice is to try and zone out and I always think in terms of breaking it down into chunks e.g. 25% 50% 75% and don't let your inner voice convince you to stop.
Having a mantra repeating around your head might help too e.g. Tom Brady's quote "I haven't come this far to only come this far" or just think of the pride that you will have after you get a PB. It's a mental battle to start with for a 10k but as your fitness improves you will be able to nail a fast 10k with no problem.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking first 4k at 2:00 then next 3k at 1:59 2k at 1:58 and 1k at 1:57. I think the trick with me is just not blowing out at the start and really pushing more to the line. It seems to workDangerscouse wrote:@Scott for the 10k my advice is to try and zone out and I always think in terms of breaking it down into chunks e.g. 25% 50% 75% and don't let your inner voice convince you to stop.
