Holiday Challenge
Holiday Challenge
Hey folks,
Anyone else looking forward to the Holiday Challenge?
I'm 62 years old. I've just started back into consistent rowing this year as part of my weight loss / fitness program. I got an Oarboard this summer and got some OTW time which helped remind me how much I like rowing.
So now I'm totally stoked to take on the Holiday Challenge! I've only completed the challenge once before and that was over a decade ago. My average pace is about 3:15 and my best week is about 43K, so doing 200K in 4 weeks plus will be a true challenge.
Any other sluggers out there doing the challenge?

Re: Holiday Challenge
Hey there! I plan to try the holiday challenge. I am 61, looking to lose weight and be more fit. I am a raw beginner but am retired so I figure time is on my side! It’d be great to have folks to talk with along the way.
One thing though, dykebert, you said you are aiming fot 200k. Is the minimum 100 k or did I read the rules incorrectly? Because I thought I’dbe able to do that, . My pace is abysmal but can only get better!

Re: Holiday Challenge
Me too! But I'm 70!
I couldn't do it last year because of an injury (I think I got that figured out now) so I'm looking forward to this. But only the 100K.
Nice to meet you!

Re: Holiday Challenge
Hi there! My first post isn’t showing up so I may not have the hang of this message board! I’m 61, new to rowing challenges and to the forum. It sounds like a lot of fun! I am trying for 100 k like wildrover but hope I can exceed that if all goes well. I plan to row about 5 days per week. I am at 5 k per day right now.
How will this work? How can we encourage one another???

Re: Holiday Challenge
And me.
I'm 68 and managed to complete the challenge last year and will be hoping to do so this year.
Good luck to you both.

Great to meet all of you!
Concept2 has a 'Training Partner' function that I haven't tried yet, so we can try that, or we can just keep this thread going.
Yes there is a 100K level and a 200K level. I'm shooting for the 200k. (Might as well swing for the fences, right?)
I'm fortunate in that I've got a rowing machine at home . I can watch TV and row. I usually watch football since I don't care what the announcers are saying, but action flicks work too.
I've got friends coming for Thanksgiving, but due to work commitments they won't be able to make it until the weekend so 'Thanksgiving' is being delayed until Saturday. That gives me all day tomorrow (Thanksgiving) to get off to a good start.

Re: Holiday Challenge
Happy Thanksgiving to the US folks!
I plan to row twice each day, so just completed my first workout and logged it. Pretty excited, 3400 m to start. Whoopie!

Re: Holiday Challenge
Good job on the 3400!
I managed 5K this morning although it took me a while.
My plan is a 15-20 min row every morning and then a second row later in the day 5 days a week.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone and good rowing!

Re: Holiday Challenge
Good for you! I got another session in tonight, 3.3 km more. I am shooting for 5 days a week too. Anybody else going to start this week?

Re: Holiday Challenge
Hi everyone - good to see that dykebert and Sally have already been out on the virtual water. Well done.
I am aiming to do 10km each session and I’ll probably row for 3 consecutive days each time before taking a rest day. My plan isn’t set in stone though as life away from rowing can sometimes have a habit of throwing up distractions when you least expect them.
I clocked up my first 10km yesterday and completed 11km this morning - nearing the end of the 10km, Procol Harum, singing ‘ A Whiter shade of Pale ‘ came up on my iPod. Had to carry on then until the end.
Sensible idea to split your rows - due to possible time constraints, I might have to do that myself occasionally.
Happy Thanksgiving Celebrations to those of you across the pond - an excellent incentive to row off all your holiday indulgences.
Ready ... Steady ... Row ... and row steadily.

Re: Holiday Challenge
Okay, you both have encouraged me and I am upping my game. I got in a total of 10 k today in 2 sessions, listening to 70’s radio! Dykebert, enjoy your Thanksgiving visitors!

Re: Holiday Challenge
Sounds like people are off to a good start. That's great! I appreciate people posting how they are doing. It helps me with the challenge.
I've got a weekend of football and rowing planned. Trying to push hard so that I've got some cushion for when life gets in the way, but trying to not do too much and burn myself out.
Anyone else think rowing is a waltz? (ONE-two-three; ONE-two-three) or is that just my warped brain?

Re: Holiday Challenge
Football and rowing. Me too!
You all are inspiring me!
I'm using the Pete plan (beginner) again, and I'm on the 3rd week. Good not to think too much about what I'm going to do next.
I did about 7K Thursday, and I think I'll try to do this daily until lack of recovery or 'life' gets in the way.
Dykebert, that OarBoard looks really cool! Thanks for starting this thread.

Re: Holiday Challenge
WHEW! Sundays are my long row (1 hr), which is a challenge in and of itself!
But I made it and I'm sticking to my schedule.
Next 3 days are my light days.

Re: Holiday Challenge
Whoa, an hour at a time! I am dividing up my workouts, morning and early evening, which is working well. I still have energy to walk the dog! Hearing how everyone is doing is very motivating.
