I'm sorry that I disappeared for so long.
While we did have a Cat 2 hurricane here, my home had no damage and we kept our power.
After that blew by, I was up in NJ for a few weeks - my father was in the hospital and then rehab and then in the hospital and then rehab, I'm hoping that he gets out in the next week or so.

I had a good month of rowing in August, I'll start again in October.
You can always start again...

I echo the sentiments expressed by the honorable gentleman from New Hampshire. We have been in desperate need of adult supervision for a long time. A certain senior citizen from Cibolo, TX had kidnapped the narrative for far too long. We will wait another day or so for the final FTC results to settle in, and I will offer a final report. I have one more running day on Tuesday but should get back on the erg for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Well, we are halfway through the 2018 season! I always check in on my annual goal about this time of year.

I finally got up to 5K meters per day this season, and at a minimum I would like to stay there or higher. For the past six years I've averaged 8K per day, but I just can't sustain that level of effort any more. I plan on starting some weight training next week, plus I take days off here and there to log and split firewood in the winter months. So I believe 5K meters per day is sustainable while accomplishing everything else.

Best wishes to all.

Great update, Angela! We are so happy to have you back and rowing with us. Thanks to Jim for announcing that we are at the halfway mark of the season--I always seem to lose track of the calendar. On the 7th I celebrated my 56th birthday. During this past year I have made a dramatic shift away from running to the erg. I don't think I can ever retire from running, but I think my new "norm" is 4-5 days per week on the erg and 2 days running (to provide a ministry of presence for my Soldiers). In October I scored a 284 out of 300 points on the Army Physical Fitness Test, which consists of a 2-mile run and max push-ups and sit-ups in two minutes a piece. The erg has definitely made a significant improvement in my push-ups and sit-ups and enabled me to score 40 points higher than the test I took six months ago. Like Jim I have settled on a primary distance, which for me is 10K rows. I have some Army travel in the near future that will interrupt my erg training, but I am still aiming to break the one million meter mark by the end of the season. Happy rowing to all!

Padre, congratulations on your Fitness Test performance! I know it does not get any easier as we get older.

For me, a moment to brag. I also just turned another year older, but I have lost 20 pounds since last year at this time. Furthermore, my total cholesterol dropped 10 points, LDL is below 100, HDL above 70, and my fasting blood glucose level dropped by 5 points and remains well below 100. I weigh less than I did in college, am about what I weighed in high school, and my BMI is firmly entrenched in the low 24s - "healthy". My resting heart rate has dropped from 53 in July to 46 in November.

All of this through rowing and ski-Erging. And adhering to a "plant-based whole-food" diet. In many ways I am in the best shape of my life but some days I sure don't feel it. Some days I can barely walk and can hardly remember my own name!

I tend to erg about 50K meters per week, but I've missed a lot of weeks this year. I hopefully will land somewhere between 1.8M and 2.0M by season's end.

Jim, that's not bragging; that's inspirational! All of us should feel encouraged to share our successes and setbacks. What a great year you have earned for yourself! And you are "preaching" a very important truth: diet is more than half the battle--especially as we hit the "nifty fifties." Congratulations and thank you for sharing your journey with all of us.

Just caught up my online logbook for the past year so that might mess up some tally's here. Getting myself geared up for the Holiday Challenge. It's been a while so I need to make sure that I am signed up. Going to check around the site some more. Hope to be around a bit more often than once a year! lol

The Holiday Challenge is NOT a Team Challenge?

Good morning from San Antonio, Texas! The Holiday Challenge starts on the 23rd of November. You can pick a charity from the list and aim to get a minimum of 100K for the month. Concept 2 makes a contribution to the charity you have chosen, and if you reach 200K, they make a larger contribution. I have a nagging hip injury from running two weeks ago, so I just started rowing again last week. I can comfortably do 30 minutes (which for me is about 6200-6400 meters). I will leave in a week for about a week to a place where I won't have access to a rower. I still hope to get to 100K in my temporarily "downsized" rowing capacity.
