Not a sine wave, which as you see has this undulating pattern. The Witch of Agnesi curve has just the one peak and spreads out in both directions getting closer to (but not touching) the horizontal line you can imagine at its base.
However, a sine wave could also work for Halloween...

Another episode....murmurations....

Still working on getting some blue skies here - and with temperatures sort of stuck at the 30 F mark yesterday, I thought "great - I'll row more!" Not so fast - Aerie, the younger of the two goldens, gave me the most reproachful look...and off we went into what I call the frozen tundra. And, as almost always happens, it was good for both of us - this gallop through the neighboring trails. I try to use the time to focus on my natural surroundings, and come back with a couple things that seem meaningful at the time.

On my way back to the house to switch out the first dog for the second dog, a flock of birds coalesced in one of the trees ahead, then split up into two flocks, then coalesced again. It happened so fast, that I sure couldn't get a photo. I found myself wondering how these birds create these rapid moving, spinning flocks, a winter behavior kind of thing. Naturally, I started looking and before I knew it...there I was, down the bunny trail. Starlings (not really very nice birds) flock together in what is called a murmuration - a word that is an onomatopoeia (sounds like the sound it represents...examples given were cuckoo and sizzle). Loudest dang murmurs that I've heard if that flock I saw was a murmuration! So far, it appears that only starlings get the designation as murmuration formers - and these murmurations can go on for quite a bit of time. A British photographer, Dylan Winter, captured quite a sequence - and put it to music. It sounds better than the actual murmuration.

So how is it that they all know which way to turn in these events?? Some researchers have compared this activity to similar darts and flips that a school of fish carries out. What is suggested is that there isn't like this all knowing central thought that drives the design, but rather the actions of the six or seven nearest birds or fish that make the path what it is. One presumes that a few of the guard birds think they see a threat, and start moving away from it...then the ripple effect occurs that creates the swoops. High speed cameras used when putting birds in a wind tunnel showed that those birds approaching each other always turned right, and changed altitude relative to the other bird.
