Snow is predicted here for Monday, and there are SO MANY pumpkins in the fields along the Rock Creek bike trail. You know what that means...it's time for the annual Pumpkin Ride! One of my bike friends said "send me the link to that! I'll put it on my calendar for next year!" Silly rabbit. Pumpkin rides can occur ANY time...you just get on your bike and GO! And so I shall. I am considering taking my BOB trailer, and picking up my couple of pumpkins (to add to those in the garden) during the ride. That would be a NEW twist to my ride. Anticipation abounds!

It was the inaugural BOB trailer ride to the Pumpkin Farm. Many amused glances, and at least three "where did you get that bike trailer??" comments. It was a very fun thing to do - blue sky day, kind of fallish temperatures!! There are THOUSANDS of pumpkins out there, AND it was a lot easier being on bikes than driving through.

Erging along in the slipstream...

Snowfall often has its unintended consequences - especially when the trees are still full of leaves. Had recently brought the pups in from yet another romp in the stuff, and there was a mighty crack and thump...enough that sleeping pups jumped up from their sleep where we crash spots. A good 20 feet of the formerly tall locust tree snapped off, and three other good sized branches (four to five inches in diameter) broke as well. All were on the ground, except for this one big one that was 20 feet above ground...positioned just so that a good wind would bring it down on unsuspecting humans or K9s. Never fear, this story has an ok ending. I knew I needed to get that big branch out of the tree.

Investigation revealed that I was without rope - which is sort of like being without a paddle. I really thought I needed one of those Batman kinds of hooks that you can send sailing through the air and it catches handily on tall buildings, and I'm sure would have worked on tree limbs that have become separated from the mother tree. I decided to fashion my own lariat out of heavy duty extension cords and my own "hook" of sorts that was tied on the end to add ballast and send the cord up the tree. Well, I failed Cowgirl 101, and the ballast ended up in the tree with the branch...and both stayed up there. Snort. Still, Buttercup continued to work this problem out. A pole trimmer brought EVERYTHING down without incident...and now I had my own jungle yard with great branches forming a maze. Pups (aka Thing 1 and Thing 2) thought this was a fabulous new environment to explore. Temperatures continued to drop.

Meanwhile, a promised trip to take care of some chore lists in Tucson couldn't be deferred...and a 60F temperature swing occurred yesterday as I flew from 25F to 90F. So there you have it...I've been on the move, and am reporting now from sunny AZ. Friends came to my aid in Colorado - and as one said, extension cords and ballast can't be good. Sometimes in life you have to enthusiastically improvise (and call your friends).
