Error message: the sensor wire is damaged

Post by at1839 » September 17th, 2017, 11:39 am

After upgrading PM5 to firmware version 24 ... anyone else? Or my tach cable is damaged for real?

Never cared for the sensor wire being routed over the knuckle of the monitor arm hinge. With that said, it would not surprise me if yours is intact except in the view of your monitor diagnostic. Why I'll be sticking to V. 22 while they peel the bananas in 24.

Test it with your multimeter for continuity, resistance should be close to zero ohms.

Same thing happened to me. After updating the PM5 firmware to version 24, I get the message every time I turn it on. I press the continue button and can use the equipment without any apparent problem.

While there is some possible evidence that the first reboot after upgrade it may produce a false message, if the message continues to be displayed each time you power up the monitor and try to set up a workout then probably the wire is damaged. Depending on the hardware version in your PM5 and which wire is broken, you may still be able to row and count meters, but battery life may suffer. You can certainly live with this situation if you desire and bypass the warning, but replacing the generator/cable is the best thing.

If after replacing the generator/cable you find that the error message is still happening then maybe there is either a bug in our code or something is broken in your PM5. In this case please write to me with the serial # of your PM5 so I can try to reproduce the problem with a PM5 with the same hardware as yours.

Concept2 Tech Support can provide downgrade firmware for anyone that requests it, please write to us with which firmware version you have and which you need and we can send a link to the file you need. Once downloaded, you can 'drag and drop' it onto the Concept2 Utility while connected via USB cord to the PM3/4/5 in question.

Hello Scott.

As told by Citroen I checked the cable

https://diana.bib.uniurb.it/pool/C2cable.jpg

and resistance is near to 650 ohms.

Do I need a replacement in the end, ie the cable is actually damaged then?

I'm in Italy, I *may* contact the local dealer but I'm not sure they can supply the replacement part ...

Tyl for your hints, PaoloC

It can be hard to measure the resistance of the cable due to the type of connector on the board and the fact it gets covered with conformal coating which is an insulator.

Typically with a good connection you will see only low Ohms or else an open circuit.

It helps to have a second person hold the lead on the board end and you hold the lead on the plug because you need to wiggle the wire because the break nearly always happens behind the 90 Degree plug cable restraint.

Over here the pickups are quite expensive so I replace the cables on them and solder the wires directly into the board.

Its always the cable, I have yet to see the electronics fail on a single one.

In the grand scheme of things 650Ω is close enough to zero that it's not open circuit. So the PM5 is being economical with the truth.

I checked the cable again, the right way this time, and the cable is ok. The error message pops up every time I connect the usb power cable but just randomly if I sit in and row with no usb connected.

The error message is always there if I push the reset button.

I guess it's a firmware issue.

I'll investigate further :) CU. Paolo.

I also got this error after upgrading my PM5 to version 24, but only once. During the workouts, I several times get an error code 22291-37. :(

hmm, getting this overtime I Row.

not really sure I want to buy and install a new sensor, just because the firmware has changed .. although it does seem like a good way to make £20 out of everyone

might either back out to the old firmware or just suffer the annoyance ... what with the new firmware errors and the forever crashing liverowing app I have become quite put off with sitting at the rower at the moment

How old is your rower? How often do you break the frame in two? How often do you fold the monitor arm? Have you had a rodent infestation   ?

Sensor wires can fail, but the usual cause is going to be something chewing through the wire or some trauma when the machine is broken in two and the monitor arm is folded. If you've not done that then call Concept2 UK (0115 9340140) and ask them for help. You may save your £20 if it's a warranty repair. Any competent electronics engineer would be able to repair/replace the cable.

It more likely to be a bug in the V24 firmware (that's my primary suspicion).
