Learned how to swing hips today

Post by Joefish » September 4th, 2017, 9:44 pm

Sort of newbie here. Have about 64K meters under my belt.

I did a drill that helped me open up my hips. The drill is arms away and then arms and body away.

I had a hard time getting my torso to 11 oclock on the catch. I realize that I needed to spread my knees apart just slightly to help free up my hips and also prevent my thighs to from hitting my gut at the catch. Overall it feels more comfortable and allows my torso to move forward at the catch without having to shrug my shoulders etc.

Kinda cool I learned something. I hope I'm not mistaken but it felt better. It helped to have my wife next to me telling me what clock position I was getting too! Hard to tell without a mirror or a wonderful wife!

Hi Joe, not entirely sure what you are referring to but there are loads of videos on YouTube for technique if you want to watch them.

Having said that my technique isn't perfect, as it is too upper body / calf dominant, but it works for me so I reckon as long as it feels better then keep doing it and as you complete more metres you will naturally tweak it all to what suits you best as it sounds like you understand the basic principles
50 HWT; 6' 4"; 1k= 3:09; 2k= 6:36; 5k= 17:19; 6k= 20:47; 10k= 35:46 30mins= 8,488m 60mins= 16,618m HM= 1:16.47; FM= 2:40:41; 50k= 3:16:09; 100k= 7:52:44; 12hrs = 153km

Really important, most ergers never get this part really done, being able to use the big muscle around the hips is a big plus, it also protects the lower back really well. Starting the stroke from a strong position needs a good hip position.
Ergers often sit in a "slouched" position, with stiff hips, short hamstrings and lots of pressure on the lower back.
