Re: Sharks and Snakes

Post by bg » August 3rd, 2017, 9:04 am

It's been really toasty, last couple of days, so I've been spending some after-dinner time in the back yard pool. Haven't seen any sharks to race ... but, DH just mentioned "did you see the snake in the pool with you?" as he walked past. Egads. I haven't moved that quickly in a very long time! The snake wasn't doing well in the salt water pool, so we (okay, DH) took pity on him and fished him out, to slither off into the rose bushes. Apparently, only a common garden snake who took a wrong turn ... but, he was a water moccasin as far as I was concerned. Where's that swim-erg when you need one?[/quote]

so far i haven't run into any snakes trail running...and hope it stays that way......did find a snake in the hallway where i taught once [before the students arrived]....needless to say i let the folks in the office know ad take care of it....

Remember Me?

Post by Thor MW » August 3rd, 2017, 2:08 pm

Hi guys

What began as a few weeks vacation turned in to moving Jan across country. It was crazy and I moved enough boxes and stuff to leave me a bent and broken man. I finally got to my laptop today. I think things are pretty much settled now and I can get back to being me. For better or worse.
I hope all are well and many great and wonderful things have been happening with my rowing family. Snake in the pool? C2 Bike? Hmm.
Take care guys.
Less Powerful Thor ... For now.

So, bg, what are you planning for our birthday, this weekend? Possibly the 8-hour ultra that I see on your dance card?!

Image Keep going...or for some of us...GET going!

Rats. Dog walking miles don't count in this Challenge....but still important to do!

Got your plan for watching the total eclipse of the sun on August 21st? If you're driving to get to a location in the eclipse path...might want to sign up for traffic text alerts in that state. Could be like the great migration. It's an event that is big business - even for the US Postal Service. A recent visit to the postal office provided an opportunity to see that the USPS even has a Total Eclipse of the Sun stamp....with thermochromic ink! I wasn't aware of this heat-sensitivity when I bought the sheet of 16, only to find that the stamps left on the car seat while I was in a meeting had turned from the sun into the moon. Now THAT was cool.

I got it!! Believe me, there are no hopes up here.

In the spirit of full disclosure, Richard and I had a little side conversation going about Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather. Conor McGregor is a talented MMA fighter who managed to be a champion in two different weight classes. He is a good striker, by MMA standards, with a powerful left, that can give him 1 punch knockout power, which is a pretty rare thing in lighter weight fights. He also has an enormous ego that could blot out the Sun a lot more completely than our puny little Moon. Because of that, there are a lot of people who can't wait to see him get knocked down a peg (or two), but, so far, he has always managed to back up his words (well, if you squint a little). So Conor McGregor gets this big idea that he's going to fight Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match, which at first seemed a total joke. But it's really going to happen, and not too long after the more interesting eclipse of the Sun. For Conor, it is a HUGE payday - elite MMA fighters make nowhere near what elite boxers make. For Mayweather, it's a great payday too - of course, he already has a ton of money, but he likes to spend a lot too. And there are also promoters making a ton of money.
Richard knows I'm a bit of an MMA fan, so he was curious about my take on all this. I gave Conor no chance, well a small chance - he could manage to get in a hit that manages to turn the tide in his favor - it's possible, and Mayweather is 40 years old (man, that's old :)). But the recent media coverage, designed to make me think Conor has a chance, started to move my thinking from "What a joke - this is like Billie Jean King vs Bobby Riggs" to "Hmmmm, maybe...". So Richard was playing the part of the Voice of Reason (hey, is that a secret symbol?), saying Don't get your hopes up. Actually, I'm not sure what I hope. In this scenario, Conor represents all of MMA, so that would make me root for him. On the other hand, Conor is Conor, and I think that makes me want to see him knocked on his A$$ (or A$$$$$$$). But now this whole farce of a match is making Richard a little nostalgic for the last glory days of boxing - some of which he was able to witness in person. I envy that - it was just the television for me.

Ah. There are some good analogies here which is fortunate and life-saving...because otherwise my eyes would have glazed over (I get a similar reaction when I walk into the hardware store when overwhelmed with things I know nothing about). This was a totally different bunny trail, and quite a good one!

So are you rooting for Mayweather, Richard?

In this case I'm not rooting for anyone. It's just a sideshow. But I will fight the winner for 1/2 of what they are getting. Boxing is a sport of the past. I will leave it at that. Before i get in trouble
