next month, one year anniversary
next month will be my first year anniversary as a rower. for the first months i didnt know what i was doing, and had perhaps 20 minutes sessions, 3 times a week on the Erg.
then i found the community, and started reading and watching videos.. and rowing.
i started with 83Kg. today, i got to 68.5 Kg.
i lost 15 Kg.
i had 30% body fat, and today 19%.
i made some minor changes to my diet, but not something life changing. i just rowed more and more. kept to the "fat burning" heart rate zone, increased the minutes of rowing over time and today i was a bit overwhelmed when i saw the scale.
all the hard work, fighting for proper technic, deciphering Pete plan, Wolverine plan, what have you plan, knee pains, back pains, general motivation issues, and on the other hand seeing that life goes on without a soft drink or sugar in your coffee, making first HM, first FM, and above all, losing weight - made it all worth it.
so thanks C2 for such an awesome machine, and thanks to the community for its support and help, encouragement and lots of lots of information.

Well done on the weight loss, now to look at improving your erg times. You'll find that helps with the weight loss too.
In her well known book ‘’The Complete Guide to Sports Nutrition’’ Anita Bean says that low intensity exercise is not necessarily the best for losing weight and uses the following example;
‘’Walking for 60 minutes burns 270 cals, of which 60% (160 cals) comes from fat.
However, jogging for 60 minutes burns 680 cals of which 40% (270 cals) comes from fat.
Thus the higher intensity exercise results in a greater fat loss over the same period of time.
This shows that a shorter period of high intensity exercise (eg 40 mins) burns about the same amount of fat as a longer period (eg 60 mins) of low intensity exercise''.
Prolonged exposure to LSD cardio (long slow duration) is also proven to have a negative effect on the thyroid gland and T3 production, a key hormone in the calorie/fat burning process. Cardiovascular training has also been shown to increase cortisol (stress hormone) levels far higher than resistance training.
The key to weight control (fat burning) is higher intensity training (faster sessions on the erg) not lots and lots of long slow stuff.

Re: next month, one year anniversary
but i really love the long slow stuff, where each stroke counts, and you fight to keep the split steady and concistant.. and my right knee really hates all those pull hard and fast stuff.. ill try to incorporate a sprint along with real hard pulls every 1,000m or so. ill see how it feels.Rod wrote:Well done on the weight loss, now to look at improving your erg times. Congratulations on your progress over a year. I have also had some great results from my Concept II model D. I have been rowing for about 9 months and have seen a loss of 23KG. I also work out primarily in my fat burning zones, although I do mix it up and row at higher heart rates one to two times per week. Like you, I only drink water and black coffee, eat well without overindulging and have not missed any particular foods. Congrats once again and keep up the great work.

Re: next month, one year anniversary
Congrats on your anniversary!
We are definitely kindred spirits with this new rowing lifestyle! I'm on BPP Week 7 and still going strong (of course there are bad and good days with that as I'm sure you know). I will hit week 24 during the last week of the year and I may cap it off with a HM. Not sure if I'm going to repeat the BPP once more or give the PP a shot.
My first year (hopefully of many to come) will be in January and I plan on still being at it such as yourself! You and others on here keep me going!
