Gave this months CTC a go yesterday. Aside from last month these sprints are new territory for me. It's fun figuring out paces and seeing how the different rests and distances make a difference. Seems I would benefit from some more power to my stroke as well.

I picked a target, decided it was too easy after the first interval, but then they got really tough to keep up with on the back end. At the very least I have better idea on the next attempt. I was able to make 1509m. Fastest interval was 1:38.0 and slowest was 1:40.6 for a 1:39.6@ r37 average.

Good stuff Ben - definitely one where having a second go will allow you to dial things in from the get go!

At time of writing there have been 352 entries so far in the May CTC (including me).
  • (Only?) 226 of those also did the April CTC - I'm using exact name matches here though so new teams etc may mean I miss folks, but from those 226 the power this month is, on average, 22% higher in May than April. This is more than when I looked at the data earlier in the month, and is probably from people having multiple goes and improving their times, having initial passes that are rate restricted etc.
  • Currently 154 names who have done both this month's and Dec '16 - with power on average 14% higher in May than Dec amongst that group.
Using those ratios to my time would predict
  • 1:34.6 based on April
  • 1:32.4 based on Dec
I had a crack this morning and (not in this order) had 3 x 158m (1:34.9), 2 x 159m (1:34.3) and 5 x 160m (1:33.7) for a total of 1,592m and an average of 1:34.2.

Certainly happy with the effort I put in here (completely cooked at the end) and set out with a target to just get under 1:35 - so also good with the outcome - but the execution was pretty shocking.

I found it really hard to get any decent rhythm - 8 were at 36spm and 2 at 38 and couldn't seem to get the rating above that. I've not done much sprinting at all recently, and (perhaps unadvisedly) had upped the DF from my typical ~115 to ~140, may have been trying too hard to get full strokes in perhaps, in any case it just felt really messy. Will defo have at least one more go this month - but when I do may drop the DF not all the way back to normal but a little closer I reckon.

Just now I have read that per team only 5 can compete.
So my joining makes it harder for other team-members like Henry to also take the challenge. I'm sorry.
If anybody would like to take a shot, I can remove my record?

No, there is a inner team competion, if you don,t make boat 1, you go to 2 etc. The stronger a team the better. The flyers are very open. You are very welcome :D

No worries, Siebe! It's musical chairs with unlimited seating. Always seats to fill and too few rowers to fill them. Give no quarter. Expect none. :P

Well, no new CTC attempt from me just yet, but I did get to update my sig picture again :) .
Was supposed to row a 3k race in the company eights field this afternoon, but my heat was cancelled
due to chance of storms. Decided to do something on the erg with that energy I was saving up.

Henry: you were right, a sub 7 was in the cards for me(and it sure felt as if it turned my lungs inside out on it's way out in those last 500m).
6:54.3, that's the kind of margin I was hoping to achieve.. doubt about making sub-7 or not are not welcome when you're pushing so hard that it's
either handle down or a big PB.

Well done, and not with a small margin B) If you really go for a 2 ot certainly hurts.

Anthony Termonen, Brisbane. Lookup was easy on the day(s?) he showed on FF affiliation meter totals. Not much trouble to find him in the 2016 rankings, current metrebd., and about him in his profile and public log. Moved his affiliation to reddit/r/rowing. Brooks logo avatar gone; replaced by Patrick Stewart on the bridge of the starship Enterprise, captioned "It's a PUSH not a PULL!" Another soul "lost" to social media.

thanks jack - hadn't noticed him and yes the attraction of social media if hard to battle

CTC is out today
Tommy Gee from the Gee Crew has set the June challenge for the CTC. It is one that has to be completed at fixed stroke rates.
500m @spm 22
rest 30s
1000m @spm 26
rest 30s
500m @spm 30
Standing start for the opening 500m, total time for the work intervals to be recorded. As the focus of the challenge is controlled stroke rate at maximum effort, the hope is that entries will follow the rates exactly. The monitor reading is decisive. Tommy has set a five second penalty for each stroke over or under the target rate. For example 500@24, 1000@27, 500@29 would incur 4 penalties, 20 seconds total.

That's going to reward those for whom those rate nodes are practised and natural but even more those who can hit target rate plus--up to "true" average 22.9, 26.9 and so on.

Jack I reckon that'd be possible on timed intervals - but on distance intervals (particularly as short as 500m) working out exactly how many strokes is just going to avoid the penalties let alone game the system will be a challenge for most!

I have been doing a fair bit of strict rate stuff of late, and for example for 22 have got into the habit of counting down from 11 for each 30", but even though I'd be very confident to hit 44 strokes exactly if it was a 2' piece - if I do that first 500m at (say) 1:55 it'll still be something of a lottery I expect!
