Re: Forum Flyers
Jack I thought I knew the post you were referring to but then realised I was actually thinking of this viewtopic.php?f=29&t=75382&start=330#p364147 which is only FF CTC participation - I don't think I've seen another list so maybe can't help on this one. Would Dougie have an easy way to provide this information perhaps?

Re: Forum Flyers
Rohan, I must be mistaken about a list inclusive of all teams. Know Bob was strong on the Nonathlon. His CTC participation would be before I started on IR. I also hope Doug and the CTC leading lights, board of governors, team captains etc. will have sufficient reason to institute a one-day challenge in his memory.

Re: Forum Flyers
Decide what the challenge is and then call it the Bob Spenger "XXXXXXXXXX" Challenge. This would be fine. Didnt we do the Joan Van Bloom Star SPangled Banner as a monthly challenege, she wasn't a member of FF so there is no president there
I dont personally go with the one off one day challenges, if we do this we'll end up with 365 of them in a few years, which ones do you repeat which ones do you not, when do you finish them??.

Re: Forum Flyers
One of the things I read about Bob is that his posts on the forum were highly appreciated. His profile mentions 5142 posts. We could make that next months ctc. A single piece of 5142 meters. Standing start no other restrictions.meerkats wrote:Decide what the challenge is and then call it the Bob Spenger "XXXXXXXXXX" Challenge.

I don't think Bob ever did a CTC. He was already 81 years old when it started in 2005.jackarabit wrote:Rohan, I must be mistaken about a list inclusive of all teams. Indeed he was a Nonathlon man, remember he sometimes did a Fm and filled all 10 distances in on go.Citroen wrote:I don't think Bob ever did a CTC. Re: Forum Flyers
CTC active for roughly 11 yrs. now? Total of one day commemorative challenges already grown to one that I'm aware of. I don't see a preeminent threat of the CTC being swamped by this trend.I dont personally go with the one off one day challenges, if we do this we'll end up with 365 of them in a few years, which ones do you repeat which ones do you not, when do you finish them??.
It does appear that Bob's contribution to the forum is of primary significance in ths question. As a member of the "forum" team, I support the suggestion from Mr. Gifford and Mr. Boers of a monthlong, team-sponsored challenge, distance equal to the quantity if not quality of Bob's forum posts. Bob's seven competition hammers and numerous age-group WRs shouid also signify in the numerological scheme if possible?
Is it the case that Bob's posts in the archived "old" forum are or are not included in the 5142 total? Should they be? Would the resulting distance fit the "doable in one hour" requirement?

Re: Forum Flyers
Just for me - I think it is appropriate for us to call our March challenge the Bob Spenger memorial and I am quite comfortable with the 5192 or some other numerical representation of his presence here. Bob had no link to the CTC personally and those that were involved with him are here on this Forum by and large - many on the CTC would have no awareness of his achievements/contributions at all but some/many will afterwards as there will be a link to his obit on the CTC page. It will be possible for those who are here to join a team and do the challenge in recognition.

Re: Forum Flyers
Lindsay, Jack some good points from both.
Definitely still keen to hear the opinions of others, but I am going to say I favour a single piece of 5,142m as the Bob Spenger memorial for the March 2017 CTC.
Here's my thinking:
Definitely still keen to hear the opinions of others, but I am going to say I favour a single piece of 5,142m as the Bob Spenger memorial for the March 2017 CTC.
Here's my thinking:
- Does Bob deserve a memorial? I would argue his world records and competition victories alone make the answer here an emphatic yes.
- Should we be the team to nominate this memorial? Without Bob having been involved personally in the CTC, it doesn't seem there's a team the memorial would sit with more naturally than us, and we are the first team to nominate a challenge following his unfortunate passing, so I am comfortable that the answer here is also yes.
- Why are we using his number of forum posts to define the memorial? Whilst his achievements alone may justify a memorial, using his forum posts in the design acknowledges his contribution to the rowing/erging community - certainly a key reason why he was held in such high regard. As the 'Forum Flyers' there is also a natural connection here for us.
- Why use just the 5,142? I favour this an appropriate and straightforward acknowledgement of Bob's contribution - it puts the focus on Bob not the maths, avoids any consternation about the details or derivations, and (as a secondary argument) sits suitably in the scope of CTC requirements.

Re: Forum Flyers
Back from Paris, was there friday/sunday, drove and was with fellow flyer Wieger and woman and lady friend who could use a lift to paris.
Race was the Open Paris, this year also the euro open, always very nice, big race, 64 ergs, lots of french racers plus ergers from all over, but mainly french.
Drive is roughly 6 hours, was pretty wet all days, but no trouble. Arrived friday afternoon, checked in, parked via a car lift for a single car, first time ever I have been in such a thing.
Kept it calm that evening, race was 11.00 next day. Walked over 2km to the venue through the rain.
Warm up, ofcourse not feeling super, form is not overly good atm.
The race, was a bit delayed, pricing ceremony is very long in Paris, lots of press, cameras etc. Plus double prices per class. First the euro best three, but also the best three french racers.
So start was late, also got a false start. Had no real plan, go by feel, and simply empty myself.
Start was good, was racing next to the nmr 1 seaded, guy from the faroer islands, who starts like a rocket, not my thing.
Was on 1.34 av from there in cruising mode, 500 av 135.2, 1k 1.37.0, was around 3/4 th place, nmr 1 was a good bit faster, but not in pace. Around 1500 137.2 and to second place, upped the rating, around 300 to go, saw I was a good bit faster than number 1 so gave it all, without looking much, 6.26.1, winner had 6.25.
Was again very very tired, chatted with the winner, who has some left, he did just enough to stay ahead if me. Had a 500 coming up, later in the day.
Wieger did ok, 6.43, hoped for 6.40. Was his first 2k in a few years.
Was my last 2k this season, pulled A very strange string of results. 626.0 626.1 and 626.1 bizar close.
And found out that 2k needs a lot of aerobic fitness, really missing that a bit atm, making the races extra though
Saw a few nice races afterwards, but stop here.

Re ctc, fine by a single distance, fine by making it in honour for Bob.
Think we should not overly complicate things, also for ourselves, to long or complicated will not help our own numbers
I fear.
