Only 10,500 metres in the Taffybank from me today, but the last 500 were done in a new PB time of 1:33.0 (from 1:34.0). I think I'd have gone faster if I hadn't been trying some "intervals" 5 minutes previous.

The time decrease was good, but I was as pleased, if not more so, with the comparison in my stroke output. My stroke rate was down 9%, and distance per stroke was up 11% compared with that previous 1:34.0 row 3 weeks or so ago.

Welcome to Taff Attack, Michael. =)

Thanks Dwayne, although I should note that I did 7500 this morning, and only 2500 this evening before the 500m PB attempt. The 2500 was in the form of 5 sets of 250m @ 2:06 pace followed by 250m @ 1:50->1:44 pace, with no rest between repetitions. My first attempt at any sort of varied pace session; up until now everything has been fixed rate (although I tend to speed up towards the end anyway).
The third contest in the Risca Regatta series was ran last night. It was entitled 'The Rapid Risca Regatta'.

A 4000 meter warm up was followed by a 500 meter sprint. In performing this sprint myself and chippy believe we have stumbled across (and consequently invented) a new rowing technique. Its called the wimp and groan!

The name comes from the sound made by a 500m sprinter as he verges on the last 50m. In all out attack Chippy obseved me doing (inventing) the wimp, as calls of ohhhwwwww! left my dying body. I didnt notice anything untoward about Chippy's row, but shortly afterward a few of my neighbours (who were having a quiet friday night drink) commented on the phenonomun. They reported a loud NNNAAAAAAGGGHHHHHHH!!!, and the wimp and groan was born.
We finished with a 5500m warm down for an even 10k.

Well done Chippy on your new PB of 1:30.6!

Excellent, Chippy. Nice 500m time. \o/

Since I passed the million metres last Friday, I haven't done any distance pieces - no 60 minutes or greater, and few 30 minutes even. So today I decided to do a half marathon.

After about 20 minutes I thought it was feeling tougher than expected, and I realised that I hadn't had any breakfast, nor any lunch. Oops. Anyway, I decided to keep going. I wasted about 10 seconds getting up at 50 minutes to get some seat padding 'cause I was feeling uncomfortable, but in the end I still snuck inside my old PB time (1:29:17) to set a new time of 1:27:33. About 2:04.5 compared to 2:07. This just sneaks me into the top half of the table for my age group on the C2 online rankings.

As before, my stroke output was noticeably different compared to my previous HM. This time, pace was up 6% and that was made up of a 7% decrease in stroke rate (29, down from 31) and 14% increase in distance per stroke. I'm not up to this 10m per stroke that I've seen mentioned though; I was doing about 8.5m/stroke for this piece I think, maybe 8.8.
Welcome MikeZ! You will not have trouble catching up with me pretty soon, I am finding that a recent bike crash seems to have caused more trouble than I thought. But I'll come back fighting!

Awesome new PB on your 500, Chippy! I hope the groan was followed by a cheer!

Daren I can't believe you got a PB on your HM after getting off and fiddling around with a seat pad! All you have to do to beat it next time is put the pad on to start with so you don't have to stop!

Carla

Sure makes me want to try speed , But Ill wait till the weight drops first.
As for the wimp and Groan, I think I do that every night when I walk into my basement and get on my yet unnamed erg. Keep it up all of you folks. Mike

Frustrated by my 'wimpy' effort yesterday, and in answer to AussieTaffs question of a few weeks ago I decided on setting a 10k PB today. Old 39:34.2 now smashed into
10k PB of 38:41.5

Still not close enough to pressure you Martin, and based on your nonathlon scores for 5 & 6k I dont think I would break even until about 3k. I have the heart of a lion, but the stamina of a sloth! Saying that at halfway I was still under 160bpm, so I think I could have gone out faster (try 1:56, instead of 1:57), but for now

PS - Loved the pain in the closing stages!

I can almost feel the hot, sweaty breath of the 'Lion of Risca' on the back of my neck ready to pounce And don't forget the Nonathlon takes age into account so I've got a head start in the points calculations. And as for Chippy's 1:30 500 .... I can only dream of such times !! Great rows Boyos First to 1 mill is wide open again eh.

Watch out for that 'dark horse' Daren - He's on your tail with a big first HM (and pretty soon on mine too once he stops stuffing around withn the seat etc).

One of the great things about TA Mike is there is always someone about your standard you can have a 'friendly' challenge with to help knock off those PB's. Really spurs one on. Speaking of which, do I sense a race for that elusive 7 min 2K ?! Daren, Bernie (jnr), Niall, Chippy (esp after a 1:30 500 !!!) are all queueing up. Game on ???

Hope you recover soon Carla, didn't realise you had come off so badly injured. I need you pushing me to see off Mike !

Cheers

Martin
