Re: About that 100K...
Great job, Shabana! Understand your thoughts about wanting to do it a certain way. When goals are set like that, gives you something solid to aim for. Big CONGRATS on making your big (and hard earned) number !Shabana wrote:I knew I could manage 100k in a 24 hour period in bits, I wanted something a little more, like the first marathon I ran all the way rather than walked/ran. Wow! what an accomplishment Shabana, outstanding effort to say the least. K2 and Ed Great job also on the challenge, looks like Ron's right in for 500k also. Bg you're Awesome! 25 marathons is an amazing accomplishment.

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Ah, a much better picture of me there
Congrats on the achievements everyone. I'm simply awed by what everyone seems to accomplish while I felt lazy and skipped another day yesterday.
I'm hoping to get at least one more row in for the challenge tonight (or tomorrow night) now that everything is working again. My son played with a neighbor in our basement yesterday and it's as if a bomb exploded there. I'll have to clear a path to the rower and clear space around it so I can row. Apparently they were playing with Lego, followed by building forts and throwing stuffed animals at each other, with a Nerf war somewhere in between.

No secret that this team has been around for quite awhile - in fact, since the first week that the C2forum opened! Over the years, we have added some quirky (but fun!) things like distance awards. Today, I had to revise some of our award statements. While I was doing that, I suddenly wondered if Ed or Richard T had ever eclipsed the 100K milestone within a 24 hour period....and I didn't know the answer. Certainly Kiba and now Andrew have specifically said they were going after this goal, and have planned (down to the pillow availability for Andrew...and the pizza availability for Kiba) how they were going to attack this goal. Andrew even had an unspoken time goal. More about that in a few minutes. So I dug around in computer files (had to go back to another laptop to seek and find), because some of you may need a refresher on what these graphics all mean.
A word or two of explanation for those perusing the team forum: had to go back to 2009 file for this document!

Another episode....or why today's 100,000 m supernova is like cycling's randonneur (also known as audax in Australia)
A randonneur or audax is a cycling event that is like a road rally for bikes. A randonneuring event is called a randonnée or brevet (and while I know that bunny bivlet is a new term for many, a brevet is something different) (oh...and there's the military brevet - a temporary increase in rank), and a rider who has completed a 200 km event is called a randonneur. During the events, the riders attempt to complete 200 km or more in a specified time, and pass through checkpoints along the route. Wiki says "In the late nineteenth century Italy, day-long "challenge" sports became popular. Participants aimed to cover as much distance as possible and prove themselves audax ("audacious")." More from Wiki: The majority of randonneuring events are classified as "brevets des randonneurs". In such events, riders follow a course through a series of predetermined checkpoints called "controls"; these are typically a few tens of kilometres apart. Each rider carries a "brevet card" which must be stamped at each control to prove completion." With the advent of GPS tracking, there are other ways to verify route and segment completion, and give the competitor the ability to design a route of his or her choosing. Obviously our logcards and other PM3,4 or 5 info can similarly be verified by Concept2.
Some of the cycling events that I have participated in have used what they called a passport card to chronicle our journey through the checkpoints of the course. Below is an image of a brevet card (certainly not mine!):
This has truly turned into a bunny trail of the mind for me...I'm off exploring randanneur events in the USA....because naturally I want to be audax, too.

Some corrections
....a supernova designates that the individual has rowed the equivalent of 100,000 m in a 24 hr period (yep....we have one who does this) Strike that....we now have TWO....Strike THAT....we now have THREE...as Richard T has done multiples on these as well. I suspected this to be true, and am glad that he continues to add to Lunie lore.
And I can't spell randonneur the right way ...but I'm working on the pronunciation....hahahaha.

Hi Team,
Great job on this challenge! I always enjoy them...
Now is the time of year over here my meters slow down... GOLF my favorite passion begins - I joined two leagues so I can golf more. Temps in the 70's and 3 nights a week under the lights for three months before the 110+ temps hit.
BG - Good luck on your marathon - always in awe in all you do! Great cause as well.
Kona - if you are out and about in your area my son and his family lives there and has a side business of food truck called Saturn Pit Stop. He is on Facebook under that name and tells where they will be... I'm bias of course but they make some great sandwiches.
Andrew - thanks for the friendly competition! Always fun to keep the pace.
Thor - hope you get better soon brother! Want you back in the saddle.
Happy Rowing all,
Ed
