This is a C&P from the UK forum, so I apologise if you've already read it.

Yesterday:

Only 2 small sessions for me today so far. I did a 5k earlier, but this teatime's 2k test was good for me.

It wasn't a best time. In fact, it's 6 seconds outside my best, but it felt important psychologically. First, I was trying to row at a lower stroke rate. Normally, my 2k pieces are done around 34/36 SPM. This evening's piece was done at more like 30.

Secondly, I wasn't dead on the rower at the end. I wasn't puffing like a stream train. I didn't collapse in a heap on the living room carpet for 10 minutes. My foot didn't ache.

No, it was a steady-paced row, still challenging, but not only wasn't I dying and praying for the end, but I felt in control and I was able to really up the pace at the end. I got off the rower afterwards and after a few heavy, deep breaths I felt like I'd done almost any other row.

I'm not entirely sure what I take from this, other than I can row a 7:20 piece quite comfortably now, so I should hopefully be able to push that 7:13.5 down a bit when I'm in the mood to go all-out.

Split/SR comparisoon is below. As you can see, I was quite a lot behind my PB pace for most of the thing, but that kick in the last 300m really started to bring the avg pace down. If I can row more steady 1:50 splits, and start the kick for home a bit sooner, that may well be enough to get me under 1:48.4 and a new PB. I haven't done the maths though. =)

CODE

2k best 7:13.5 2k TEST 7:19.2
------------------ ------------------
Split Avg SR Split Avg SR

100 1:49.00 1:49.00 33 1:54.50 1:54.50 29
200 1:48.00 1:48.50 33 1:50.50 1:52.50 30
300 1:47.00 1:48.00 34 1:51.00 1:52.00 30
400 1:46.00 1:47.50 34 1:51.50 1:51.88 30
500 1:47.00 1:47.40 31 1:50.50 1:51.60 30
600 1:46.50 1:47.25 34 1:51.00 1:51.50 30
700 1:47.50 1:47.29 34 1:52.00 1:51.57 29
800 1:47.50 1:47.31 34 1:51.00 1:51.50 30
900 1:47.00 1:47.28 34 1:51.00 1:51.44 30
1000 1:48.00 1:47.35 36 1:51.00 1:51.40 32
1100 1:49.00 1:47.50 33 1:51.50 1:51.41 30
1200 1:48.50 1:47.58 33 1:51.00 1:51.38 32
1300 1:48.00 1:47.62 36 1:51.00 1:51.35 30
1400 1:49.00 1:47.71 33 1:50.50 1:51.29 33
1500 1:50.50 1:47.90 33 1:50.00 1:51.20 30
1600 1:50.00 1:48.03 35 1:50.50 1:51.16 30
1700 1:51.00 1:48.21 32 1:49.00 1:51.03 33
1800 1:49.00 1:48.25 36 1:45.00 1:50.69 31
1900 1:50.00 1:48.34 33 1:43.00 1:50.29 35
2000 1:50.00 1:48.42 36 1:41.50 1:49.85 38

I dunno, although it was 6 seconds outside my best, I just feel really good about it. =) I wish I'd had the heart rate monitor on, so I could compare my pulse between the two.

Today:

If you read my post in the "What training have you done today" thread last night, you'll have seen that I did a 2k test piece. It was 6 seconds outside my PB, but that wasn't the point. The point was that it was a controlled piece that didn't leave me exhausted, and made me feel good.

At the end of the piece I said:

QUOTE

If I can row more steady 1:50 splits, and start the kick for home a bit sooner, that may well be enough to get me under 1:48.4 and a new PB. I haven't done the maths though. =)

Well, I decided to give that a go today. I also remembered to put the heart rate monitor on.

Well, the result was, as I'd hoped, a new 2k PB. Down from 7:13.5 to a new 7:11.9. What's more, my stroke rate was way down on normal (27/28) instead of the 33/34 of my previous best. I held quite steady 1:49 / 1:50 splits until 500m to go, and then I ramped it up. Judging by the heart rate read out, I could have kicked harder, and sooner. Incredibly (to my mind), my end heart rate was only what I'd hit after a mere 700m of the previous best.

I'm dead chuffed with this, again because I felt I rowed within myself, and although I was more out of breath today than after my test row yesterday, I had gone 8 seconds faster, and I didn't collapse on the floor anything like as much as I normally after a 2k attempt.

Splits, SR and HR scores on the doors follow:

CODE

Sepember 28th October 14th
-------------- --------------
Pace SR HR Split SR HR

100 1:49.00 33 153 1:51.00 30 129
200 1:48.00 33 164 1:49.00 30 142
300 1:47.00 34 167 1:49.50 27 148
400 1:46.00 34 170 1:50.00 25 152
500 1:47.00 31 172 1:49.50 27 157
600 1:46.50 34 174 1:49.00 27 161
700 1:47.50 34 176 1:49.00 28 163
800 1:47.50 34 177 1:49.00 28 164
900 1:47.00 34 178 1:50.00 27 166
1000 1:48.00 36 178 1:50.00 27 167
1100 1:49.00 33 179 1:49.50 25 169
1200 1:48.50 33 179 1:49.00 28 170
1300 1:48.00 36 183 1:49.00 30 170
1400 1:49.00 33 180 1:49.50 27 171
1500 1:50.50 33 180 1:47.50 28 172
1600 1:50.00 35 181 1:45.50 31 173
1700 1:51.00 32 182 1:44.50 35 174
1800 1:49.00 36 182 1:43.00 32 174
1900 1:50.00 33 182 1:43.50 35 175
2000 1:50.00 36 183 1:43.00 38 176
------- -------
Avg Pace: 1:48.42 1:48.00

Time: 7:13.5 7:11.9

Hi ya Taffs. I'm back (not for long though, off to Thailand tomorrow).

What a wonderful honeymoon. If you've never been to the Carribean, I highly recommend it.

As you can see by the meters, there was a erg on the ship. What's one of the strangest things in the world? Erging on a moving ship. If you've ever done it, then you know what I mean.

Welcome aboard all you new Taffs. The recuiting has been good lately eh Chris?

Haven't been able to read through all of the posts since I've been out, but I did see a couple of things. 1. Rickster - Happy B-Day. 2. The interviews are great!! Funny stuff man!!!!

I've got to go for now. Lot's of stuff to do before I leave tomorrow. FYI - I'll have an erg at the hotel, so I'll be able to put in meters while I'm there (two weeks this time!!). I should also be able to check in periodically. So I won't be completely out of touch with the rest of you.

Erg on!!!!

Speedy

Great Job Daren!! No wonder you feel so pleased with yourself. It seems to me your first test run was very important as it gave you the knowledge and confidence to determine what rate you were probably capacble of achieving. Your live 2K just confirmed it.

Don't forget to update your signature as it still has the 7:13 time.

I'm planning on doing exactly what you've just done next Wednesday and do a test 2K. My target is 7:20 so I'll be looking at 1:50 splits.

I also must add how impressed I was to read you'd completed your million metres in 50 days, that's a fantastic rate, well done!

Hi Dwayne

Glad you had a great time in the Caribbean. Even gladder you're back. Daren that's an excellent time for the 2K, especially as it still doesn't seem as though you are going all out. For what it's worth I row the 2k at 31/32 spm. At that rate, you'll be very close to going under 7 minutes at BIRC!! Brilliant stuff.

Niall, I don't look cool dancing on dry land, so I would hate to think how uncool I looked dancing on a ship.

Go walk a plank Sir "Stealy" Pirate, Dwayne's staying with us!! Get it???

Bernard

Sorry about the long post, but I enjoy all the reparte in this thread. I also thought that it would be interesting to see how the teams compare when looking at the mean number of meters per member rather than total meters. In this list that puts Taff Attack at 29th, and even the Ancient Mariners are 15th. So... more challenges for the team members.

CODE

Rank Team # members total m mean m
1 Oberlin SMU CMU 1 4,595,573 4595573
2 LCS '79/ WLU ' 83 1 3,015,577 3015577
3 Royal College Colombo 7 1 2,805,500 2805500
4 Simfit, Simcoe 1 2,337,936 2337936
5 Butler University 1 2,115,000 2115000
6 stafford international 1 2,105,593 2105593
7 University of Glasgow 1 1,936,617 1936617
8 UCR, UIUC GSLIS 1 1,865,178 1865178
9 York University / Loyola College 1 1,751,260 1751260
10 University of British Columbia 1 1,740,805 1740805
11 Decathlon Bordeaux-Lac 2 3,350,412 1675206
12 St, John's College Annapolis 1 1,585,575 1585575
13 Texas A&M University 2 2,977,503 1488752
14 Royal College 7 9,844,978 1406425
15 Ancient Mariners 29 40,024,792 1380165
16 Washington State University 4 5,271,190 1317798
17 Erg Monkeys 3 3,919,489 1306496
18 Viking Rowing Club 2 2,264,933 1132467
19 Lemons Rowing Club 2 2,121,086 1060543
20 TEAM OARSOME IRC 22 23,035,452 1047066
21 Wesleyan University 3 3,108,158 1036053
22 Austin Rowing Club 2 2,057,804 1028902
23 Scotus Ergus 2 2,054,799 1027400
24 northwestern michigan college 3 3,031,787 1010596
25 Norwich University 2 1,927,411 963706
26 HAVK Mladost, Gubec 9 7,857,793 873088
27 Old Wrecks 3 2,546,945 848982
28 University of California, San Diego 2 1,634,060 817030
29 Taff Attack 19 15,327,707 806721
30 BluesTravelers 2 1,527,198 763599
31 McGill University 3 2,116,300 705433
32 University of Notre Dame 5 3,467,957 693591
33 Massachusetts Institute of Technology 28 18,417,899 657782
34 University of New Brunswick 3 1,973,208 657736
35 Syracuse Chargers Rowing Club 6 3,679,424 613237
36 University of Iowa 5 2,985,364 597073
37 Fana Roklubb 3 1,779,548 593183
38 Rutgers College 5 2,952,324 590465
39 Dartmouth College 10 5,896,641 589664
40 Riverfront Recapture 3 1,712,822 570941
41 Chautauqua Lake OM Rowers 3 1,698,153 566051
42 Université de Dakar 10 5,606,418 560642
43 queen's university belfast 10 5,429,129 542913
44 Maple Bay Rowing Club 18 9,758,873 542160
45 Prince William Rowing Club 5 2,684,279 536856
46 Rice University 3 1,557,076 519025
47 Forum Flyers 20 10,355,621 517781
48 Arizona Outlaws 10 5,059,838 505984
49 University of New Mexico 24 11,906,822 496118
50 McDowell Tribe 4 1,967,965 491991

Speedy!
Welcome back!
I can't believe you ROWED on your honeymoon! What, do you have a GOAL or something???? Well, I guess Mrs. Speedy must be used to your vice already...

Daren: Great news about your 2Ks. It feels a LOT better to row with a more powerful stroke, doesn't it? You're a true contender!

Hey Sue you're toting up the meters pretty quick. Are you and Graham competing?

29th....come on...that's not good enough!!!! We Taffs are made of sterner stuff, right? Each of us needs to row a bit more than twice the amount we currently do to catch up to Royal College.
