Good going, Sue! I can feel your breath on my back! Guess I'd better get my rump in gear, or you'll leave me in your wake.

How do you like the erg? Are you using it exclusively, or cross training? You're making great progress.

Carla
Hi Sue,

There must be a mountain nearby that you climb a lot? How far is it to the top & what's the elevation? Just curious. That's a kind of unique thing to do as a routine.

I bike & row. I used to swim a lot, and may do that again--the pool hours weren't making sense with my schedule. I also used to run but have been finding that not very good for me anymore.

We're glad you're on the team. We need every meter we can get! The Royal College Team is only 313,902 meters behind us--with only 7 members--and UNM is 432,371 ahead of us.

Time to go do my 10K.
Carla

Hey Carla, only a few more K's before we crack the 200K barrier! Which one of us will get there first ? I've lost count of the number of calf injuries since making a 'comeback' to jogging (inspired by my 25 year old daughter who actually enjoys distance running - we are doing a Half Marathon early October) after a 15 year layoff. I found that they soon pass and don't stop one training, albeit on a reduced workload provided that the injury is not a tear. Different approach then - plenty of rest followed by very gradual increase in training intensity from a low starting point.

Well Speedy, I suspect no red (white & blue) blooded American could let a small matter of 500K pass through to the 'keeper (a cricket term, an Aust vs USA cricket match was played the other day, did you see it over there on TV?) !!!! A pretty tough ask but maybe made a bit more feasible with the top end of the TA Leaderboard (excepting you and Jasmine) having a bit of a siesta (hot Northern Hemisphere summer?) at the moment. A bonus would be the passing of UoNM with that 500K (if done tomorrow) ! Plus keep Royal College at bay for a bit longer.

Speaking of RC, one can't help but be impressed by their progress up the ladder - Colombo is pretty hot and humid most of the year and they are basically a team of 6 judging by their individual K's.

Niall, 7th spot claimed and the 300K mark about to fall - Bonza effort !

Cheers all,

Martin

New season's best on 30 minute piece--an improvement of over 200m and only about 40m short of my old PB. I did a very slow 2K warmup and then set the display on avg. pace, which I've never tried before. The PM1 didn't have it, so I've been used to displaying total meters. This time I looked up 7K on a pace chart and found I had to hold 2:08 to make it. It was not hard until the last 5 minutes and I ended up with 7095, at avg 2:06.8 and 24 SPM. Usually I use the meter display to help keep the stroke at 10 meters per stroke, but I don't know how I did on that. It felt like I might have been a bit on the short side.

Anyone remember how to figure that out from avg SPM and pace? If it comes out less than 10, I'll have to decrease the SPM. It is so helpful to have that avg pace displayed, I hate to give that up.

Your turn at bat, Martin!
Carla

Great row Carla, breaking the 7000 barrier and so close to your old PB. Looks like you are back in town !

Off to the gym tomorrow to be the first through the 200K (unless you have another 4K in you !). I'm now inspired to try that 30 min 8000 barrier again after your achievement, need to carry that inspiration onto the beast tomorrow though, not just whilst typing this !

Martin

PS If you did 24 SPM average for 30 mins that equates to 24 X 30 = 720 strokes in total.
Dividing metres rowed by 720 gives metres per stroke, in your case (7095) just a bit under 10 (7200 metres rowed would be 10 exactly).

Must confess to never using 'metres per stroke' as I either use the 'average rate' feature to determine if I need to go faster/harder (if I can !) or have a little recovery period (i.e. loaf) or I simply do what you did with the PM1 and do mental calculations (based on the time/distance displayed) at various key points (1K,2K, etc) to see how I'm travelling. Helps take one's mine off the pain too!

Carla,

Fantastic effort on the 30-minute row. Pulling an avg 2:06.8 at 24spm , you've obviously getting good power out of each stroke. By my calculations you're doing about 9.85 metres per stroke (not your target of 10 but damn close). Came to this figure through the following calculations:

Total number of strokes= 30 x 24 (30 minutes x 24spm) = 720
Total distance travelled = 7095
Distance per stroke = 7095 / 720 = 9.85

Hope that helps!

It'll be interesting to see who out of Carla and Martin breaks the 200K barrier first. I'm guessing Martin's favourite due to daylight hours in Oz coming before the USA. Of course an 8000 row from Martin wont quite make it for him unless he takes Carla's lead and does a 2K warmup row.

Many congratulations to Sue for hitting that 100K marker. Hope the rowings getting that tummy flat and I hope you've drawn Graham's attention to the fact that he's lagging behind you in the metres!!

Just realised Martin's amended his previous post to include the metres per stroke information that I've now duplicated in my posting above. Oh well, two postings on the subject are certainly better than none I guess!

Martin,

I see you're online right now (feels kinda spooky as it's 06:30 over here in the UK!!) .You gonna sneak in 9K to break that 200K barrier while Carla's asleep??

Now for the maths Carla -

Let SPM be the Average Strokes per Minute and MPS be the Metres per Stroke.

Then Distance travelled in 1 minute = SPM x MPS

Let T be the Time in seconds displayed as 'rate I'm doing 500 metres in' (eg 1.40 pace would be T = 100 seconds)

Then Distance travelled in 1 minute = 500 x 60 / T = 30000 / T

Equating these two equations gives : SPM x MPS = 30000 / T

So MPS (Metres per stroke) = 30000 / ( SPM x T)

If you want to do, say, 10 MPS then the denominator (SPM x T) needs to be

30000 / 10 = 3000.

If you row at 2.05 pace then T = 125 seconds (2.05 pace in seconds), making SPM = 24 to get our denominator of 3000 (24 x 125 = 3000). If you row at 1.40 pace (100 seconds) the required SPM for 10 MPS becomes 30 ! And so on.

So as you are rowing merrily alomg Carla you can be doing these calculations at any poimt of your row !! Just remember to convert the pace to seconds/500.

Hi Niall, it's 4 pm Friday Aussie time. I've got a lazy afternoon so thought I would muck around on the computer. Nice to chat 'interactively' as I feel I'm way out of sync with my utterings timewise !

No sweat with the 200K, it's in the bag !! 2K warmup (no 20 min bike since Speedy's "extra K's commemts" showed me the errors of wasted bike Kms!) then PB 30 mins then warmdown chatting up any poor unsuspecting person on the rower next to me !

Thanks for the encouragement,

Martin

Bonza achievement!!!

I'm off for my 10K now (plus 2K after a 5 minute cycle).

I should break the 300K barrier tomorrow. Wish me luck!!

Whoa, my next gym visit is tomorrow Niall ! Hasn't yet happened ! Sorry about the slang, "In the bag" in Aussieland is a cocky/tongue-in-cheek way of saying it's a shoo-in (but not yet actually happened ! - and sometimes doesn't !!).

Good luck with the 300K barrier (was going to say 'break a leg' but thats Theatre isn't it !)

Martin
