TimbukTOO Team Room
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
sisaacso1: I love to annoy so during the challenge when I do my sets I'll ramp up the distances like; 7,777 then 7,888 and work up in sequence! I'm into my 8's turning in 8,222 today. The women's rowing team coach from the university ergs with me sometimes in the afternoons at the Y... he just shakes his head! I like to warm up with my feet unbuckled. That really builds your core. The first 1/2 marathon is the worst. I try to do one a week during the challenge as it really adds the meters. Have an extra bottle of water on hand and hope someone is around to just pull the handle if you have to run for a bathroom break so you don't lose your screen...Welcome to the world of erging!
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
I am going to shoot for 200K+ as well. This is such a win-win: a good charitable cause, and an opportunity to work off all the holiday calories.
It is good to see the board come alive again! Get better Bobbie!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
I love reading all of this helpful advice ... I'm going to put some of it to use and not strap in during my warm up ... please
Put me down for 200K ... it's great having this motivation to keep going for a cause in December ... Feel better Bobbie Z.

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
New guy again I only have seen Jim C's impressive numbers, but I am sure the others have great numbers too. I am wondering what stroke rate people use for long distance rows (generally 7.5k an d higher). When i row 2k I row around 28-29 spm, then start creeping it up arond. Maybe 1-2 strokes lower for a 5-6k. My times increment somewhat consistently as i go longer, though I got destroyed the only time I did 60 minutes. I row first thing in the morning before I eat breakfast. Not sure if the hour long session killed me cause I ran out of energy from no food. My stroke rate on the 60 min session was 27 spm. I was hoping to try a half marathon soon and wanted to get some tips on that for stroke rate. I generally do a drag factor of 135 for most 2k to 8k, then drop to 125-130 for anything longer. Any tips would be awesome.
I have watched lots of videos, but this one is one of my favorite. The person in it is a two time silver medalist, and does a great job of explaining how to row a 2k. Just thought I would leave the link in case anyone wants to view it. I figure if someone can talk to the camera the whole time during a 2k and still pull a 6:29.9, he is pretty good and knows what he is doing

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
sisaacso1: That is quite the video. That rower has two things going for him, his muscles and his youth. For what it is worth... I rowed with a masters rowing club for six years. Unfortunately I was never able to get any of the other rowers to do any kind of erging on the Concept 2's. Its a long, involved, sad story... Anyway my coach and I used to erg together. This is how I do my workouts: Starting out you want the damper set at about 3 1/2. This is what our coaches insisted on saying it was about what you would encounter on the water. The foot strap should go over the widest part of your foot. Don't have it too tight. The stroke itself can take forever to get right. If you begin your stroke "at the release" you have legs extended, leaning back, the handle just under your chest. This is the spot you would be if you just finished the stroke and tapped the oar blade out of the water. Starting your stroke you do a quick "arms away", lean forward and slide up to the "catch". It is important to have the handle in front of the knees before you start the slide. When you are as forward as you can be this called "at the catch" as it is at this point you would drop your oar into the water. You stay leaning forward and push back with the legs, when fully extended then you open the back and finally pull in the arms. That gives you the fullest movement of the "oar". You want to use the slide to the "catch" to relax as that is the only rest you get. The harder you push away on the stroke you can see the split rates lower. You want the chain to stay level as you work through and the movement smooth just as an oar should be to keep the set of the boat. Believe me it is harder to keep a low split rate at a lower stroke per minute. My stroke rate is usually in the 20's. It has been a while since I last trained to rate a workout. If I can keep the split rate under 2:00 for a minute or so, that is really good for me now. My warm ups have split rates usually in the 2:20's and then I'll play around with the lower splits. I'll reward myself every 1,000 meters with 100 meters "paddle" for a water break or rest if I'm winded. It is more enjoyable to train with a partenr if possible... hope this helps some. I turn 65 next year and I can really tell how I've slowed up in the past few years. But the rewards from the Concept 2 are amazing. My last check up my Dr said my heart sounded like someone's in their 20's...
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Thanks for the info, I have watched a ton of videos to try and get my technique much like you are saying, though I should probably video myself to see where I have bad habits. You did mention one thing that i forgot to post about last time. On the Concept2 website it has a link for training partners. What is that about? Do you share your workouts? I let anyone view my workouts, don't really care if the whole world can see it. I assume you would want someone who rows close to the meters you row, or close to your times? What are the benefits? I kind of wanted to be a training partner with someone just to see what it is. If someone is interested in being one with me, that would be great. I am currently doing the Pete Plan, just about to end the third week. Over the last three weeks I have been averaging around 45-65k/week. I will include my times, most are pretty up to date, though I haven't done a 2k for a month. Wanted to finish the first cycle of the Pete Plan before doing another 2k time, hoping to get sub 7 min, but probably wishful thinking on my part
I wear a fitbit, and even though I have really only been rowing since October (received the rower on Sep. 16th but took it really light for a couple weeks), i have noticed my resting heart rate has dropped 5-6 bpm. I wish I had found out about rowing years ago, I love it.

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
I am not really rowing for speed anymore. I figure as I get older I will never hit the speeds I achieved when I was younger. I wish I had kept track of my rates 30 years ago ... ... I coulda been a contender!
Last year I tried rowing at a lower stroke rate for the whole year. I was rowing about 15 to 17 spm and my overall pace for the year was about 1:56/500m; drag was about 135 to 150. Now I am just putzing around at just under 20 spm and keeping everything under 2:00/500m; same drag. Maybe I'll get motivated again someday.
I also have a Fitbit, and noticed my resting pulse dropped a few points once I started keeping track. For the last six months my Resting HR has been 50. When I am sleeping it drops down near 40 to 45. (Wouldn't that be my real resting HR?) I like to keep track of the fat burn and cardio zone stuff, but sometimes it doesn't seem to make any sense. I'll do the exact same workout every day for a week and get wildly different results.

Hope you are feeling better soon, Bobbie Z!
Hangtree, hope you are ok too.
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Thanks for the update Angela - much appreciated as always
It's been a bit tough getting regular sessions in this time - having my hallway floor laid, so haven't always been able to get to the gym room, let alone try and make space to set up the rower in amongst all the tiles, tools, bags of cement, etc!
It's also been really bright and sunny, so I haven't been able to resist going out for a few runs instead of rowing
Hopefully will still manage the 200k by Christmas eve, though - if my terrible snacking in front of the TV last night is anything to go by, I'm gonna need it!

Thanks for the updates Angela!
Trying to work through a number of injuries this year that have really slowed me down, but am starting to get back into my groove again the last few weeks (200k goal for the Holiday Challenge is motivation). Hopefully the knees and rotator cuff can hold out for a few more weeks as I push the minutes and meters up a little more!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Hey all.... if you are participating in the challenge and are like me, you most likely have a butt that is worn raw in spots. I was referred to a product through a good friend for chafing/diaper rash. As I understand you can buy it through a pharmacy usually on special order OTC as it is not a stock item. I ordered it through Amazon. The product name is Resinol. It just arrived and gave me instant relief upon application. Check out the reviews online... I highly reccommend this... hope it can help some of my teammates....
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
We got our first real snow of the season today. In the past I would make sure to get my row in before I went out to deal with the snow removal. But with age comes wisdom, and I think my new policy is going to be "don't kill yourself getting a row in". Today will be a snow day.
But it got me to thinking: will one of you engineers out there invent a "RowBlower"?

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Row blower, very funny!
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
When I used to row on the water we would splash water onto the seat tracks to smooth out the stroke. I discovered by accidently splashing water from my water bottle onto the slide, the same is true on the Concept 2's. I start every erg with a splash now....
