I was always curious about 1250 since it seems like there is lots more to do. I once did an 1800 and wonders by I didn't finish. For me a 1609 at desired 2K pace seems to goldilocks it.

Jack, good to see you back posting here again, congrats on the 9m milestone, I'm not quite up to 1m logged yet and I don't think you've been doing it for that much longer than me.
Rohan, very impressive pacing control on your 8k
Piers, looking good for a massive 2k PB soon. I'm in the same boat in terms of wondering what the best strategy is for picking an achievable pacing plan for BIRC. Given my last 2k attempt was an HD I think I've got to finish one at close to max effort and then vary it only slightly, I think that means I'm going to set a pacing plan for something that should be within my grasp like 7:04 and just get it done next week but without the estimated time on the display to tempt me into going too hard too early. Then in the week before BIRC I'll taper by replacing the intervals with practicing warm up, starts and executing the sub-7 plan for 1250m. Does that sound sensible to people?
I did manage to grab a half hour session in the gym yesterday so
PP 4.3.2 in the wrong order SS (ish)

Strong strokes John, seems like you are getting back into it without missing a beat.
Rohan, Jack, Glenn and John. It is a tricky question, I can't afford to go into the BRIC cold, and as I haven't done a proper 2k test I really do need to get one done, but timing is everything. Last month I did a 1609m at 1:47.5 pace for the indoor rowers league. From my notes that was an ok session pacing was a little slow at the start (1:48.3 first 800m), although I didn't have much of a kick at the end. So I should attempt a 7:10 2k, but should that be sooner so I get the feedback or later so it's a more accurate reflection of my time. There again reaching for the shower gel this morning I managed to 'tweak' my right shoulder blade, so I may have to have a couple of easy days anyway...
I have also been tempted to try 1:46 for the first 800m and then depending on how I feel 1:45 for next 400m then 1:44 for 400m and a sprint to glory
If this wasn't going well I could either hold on to the 1:46, or slip to 1:47.x.

You guys are doing a great job at talking eachother fear in.
Maybe have a look at Shawn s thread. He DID 100 plus TT trials 90% plus effort. Including some handle downs. But pulled pb s on every distance he tried.

Henry I don't need this thread to put fear into myself and it isn't I find it a positive influence. What does put fear into me is just looking at my predicted times from the PP indicators scares the life out of me, frankly to me it is insane that I am talking about a 7:10 2k or a low 19:00 5k, my first recorded 2k test I did back at the end of February was a 8:11.5 which involved what felt like a near death experience.
However I will take on board what you are saying and try and be positive about my 2k's rather than being frightened of failure.

The fact you improved is only possitive. Why should it stop here or get more difficult?

And other point, if you never fail a TT sometimes, you never trully reach your current potential. Only races should never fail in my book. A tt, so be it.

As we get fitter our ability to tolerate pain improves too. Your faster 2K will actually be less painful than your slower, near death experience.

There is pushing past what you think you can't do to what you can. There is no pushing past what you can't do no matter what you think! Corellational prognostication is the sizzle but doing is the steak. Doc Baker's "demystification" strategy is mostly grabbing the nettles again and again.
On the flip aide, Greg Lemond famously said that you get faster but it doesn't get easier. Only so many revs in a racing engine. Seems to me that partial reps concentrate practice on what needs practice. An actor doesn't learn his lines at the dress rehearsal. Eventually all the lines have to be delivered in sequence with enough economy to make the curtain call.

You got this Piers. Enjoy it. It will test your courage for a second but with all those people around there is no way you will HD! I think the only thing to worry about is not giving it away in the first quarter by going too hard due to being amped. I am not a great basement tester but a race is a whole different environment. It's a celebration of everyone doing their best. There is nothing to lose

Piers, on starts, I'd previously just done a few hard pulls full stroke to get the flywheel moving. After seeing it mentioned somewhere I'm now favouring a 3/4 stroke, full stroke, 3/4 stroke, full stroke start where which seems to get the flywheel up to speed faster with less PE. The version of the 3/4 stroke I do is no back movement and a reduced arm motion, no idea if that was the intention but it does seem to work.

These sort out the men from the boys and I am most certainly in the latter category. No idea where the last interval came from.
